  1. Yes I think on the Jansson question it is Sid who wants a definitive answer and won’t accept one that disagrees with his My thought is and I think I have posted it at least once is look at Leigh Adams. Such a consistently great rider. You would think the GP system was perfect for him, but he never won the title even though you just had to be very consistent without even winning GP’s Even someone as great as Gollob only won one title and that was when most people had thought he had missed his chance(s) And Brian Crutcher is maybe the epitome of someone who showed a hell of a lot of promise but couldn’t build on that. Tommy Miller to a lesser extent
  2. You quote me stating it is difficult to KNOW, then say the trouble is everyoone is convinced they KNOW
  3. I sort of agree with this to some extent Always difficult to judge how things would have panned out if Bruce hadn't decided to retire. Just like if Ronnie Moore hadn't had that break from the sport at his peak. I would in both cases like to think they could have taken at least another title. Possibly more so even in Penhall's case. But Ronnie had proved he could beat the best of his rivals, whereas you could say a new generation came up when Penhall left the sport. But would they have been such a success if he had stuck around ?
  4. Another thing i thought was interesting, and probably nothing more than that, and it is highlighted by watching Crump was.......those who could maintain their form and win two titles on the trot Jack Young Briggo Fundin Mauger the only rider to win 3 on the trot Penhall Gundersen Nielsen Rickardsson twice !! Pedersen and now Zmarzlik and obviously i would put some extra significance on those who maintained that form in GP years
  5. Spot on Probably time to ignore the old duffer on this thread and concentrate on more important things
  6. A hastily set up Rye group after his attempts to take over the topic on here failed ? A track he is so interested in, it is probably 60 years or more since he visited
  7. Yes that is Paisley. By the time i went there for a St.Mirren european game one end had been squared off
  8. Just at a glance seems a few just in London missing there like Stamford Bridge, Walthamstow,Crystal Palace and Lea Bridge......
  9. Well i saw the excellent England v Poland meeting at Hackney the year before with basically the same team.....Barry Thomas of course in for his home track knowledge. When England 5-1'd Poland each and every heat apart from one
  10. Again, endorse your cmments Ribbons obviously has some good points, but commenting on an open discussion forum wasn't one of them. You have to take the good and bad comments. That seems to be a failing with Rob umpteen times over the years Sure though everyone wishes Rye House a successful future
  11. First meeting won by HYNEK STICHAUER Malyschew second, Bukhave 3rd and Richard Geyer 4th in final
  12. No I earlier saw he is down to ride in the speedway on ice meeting today. Maybe he will win it or even has won it. Not sure when it finishes

  14. Yes, i didn't go to a great many away meetings at the time, but those i did attend were quite disappointing from a Dons point of view
  15. Oh Nikki Glanz......sometimes the riders from around 20 years ago are more lost in my memory than those from 40 years ago. Didn't he go on to be mechanic for another Dane ? Klindt maybe ?
  16. Just mentioning Aussie rider Rob Jones on another thread, it seems he was actually born in the UK and emigrated ,then returned to the UK as an Australian. Guess he emigrated as a youngster Also of course the famous pioneer Aussie Ron Johnson, who was born in Scotland Plus alongside him was Frank Pearce born in Chiswick Any others ?
  17. Think you are right about Graeme. Think he had a number of health problems in later years as well
  18. I quite liked Neil. He was one of my favourites at Plough Lane at the time. Never going to be a world beater, but good second string. Nice sideburns, i see to remember. Also liked young Aussie Rob Jones. But more for his hair than anything else No, he was also promising for a while In fact, looking back, maybe that was our biggest problem, that we had too many riders who looked promising, but never really made it any better than that Graeme Stapleton another. Bert Harkins ?
  19. Blimey. Didn't realise Burza was still riding. But at 44 can he really be described as 'promising ' ? Also surprised Aarnio is still around tbh. Seems like a whole lifetime ago when i saw him at the indoor meeting in Neustadt/Dosse
  20. I wasn't, but knw of Peter as well The rider i was thinking of is Noah Moos from Denmark. Saw him riding in Ludwigslust a few years back
  21. Also the US NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace, who was in some controversy this year
  22. Only seen a handful of non white riders. Thomas Sörensen from Denmark was one who was around a while. Saw a young Chinese looking kid from Sweden once and i think there is a black youngster in Germany
