Wild Cards 2014
iris123 replied to PHILIPRISING's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
There is a qualifying system. There is a series of meetings to qualify both the GP series itself and qualifying meetingd. There are though a few riders picked generally on merit. It is hard to pick more than one, maybe two riders who are picked who shouldn't be in the series.Hardly a big scandal....In fact mostly it is the riders who have qualified through those relatively open qualifiers who are the worst. There isn't a lot wrong with the line-ups each year. The main problem for me is the tracks picked and the poor race surfaces -

Another important factor. We want to see the best riders of course, but interest around the globe(well Europe really) needs to be maintained.Just as an extreme example look at Ice Speedway. If it was down to the best 16 riders then possibly 12,13 or 14 would be Russian. They had for years a limit of 8 Russians and have now reduced it even further down to 6 i think.Saying that i don't think it has really made much difference in furthering interest and it seems the FIM might be having trouble attracting West European and possibly even Russian tracks and i don't see an upsurge in West European riders either. But i guess without a Dutch rider or a German rider in then interest would shrink even further -

Well it depends on when the final qualifiers were held, but say Holder,Sayfutdinov and even Woffinden might have had a bit of trouble this season qualifying for next year......i know you will say "tough" or something, but none of your arguments can make me believe that next years GPs would be better without any of those riders. -

Did mention this some weeks back that Egon Müller stated during the SEC Eurosport coverage that Germany would host a GP and an SEC round next season.Thought Phil stated it would be 2015,not 2014? -
Gp Viewing Figures.

Robert Lambert has ridden in Germany the last two years and has never ridden in the Elite League.Simon Wigg, for instance rode on a Dutch licence years ago.........don't see what the problem is,as someone has pointed out Scott rode abroad whilst not having an Elite team, but if it really came to it Tai could ride on any licence -

I agree.I think his ability should be enough to justify a place.I think his influence on the attendance at either daugavpils or tampere will be negligeable and not really needed as an argument for him being included. His ability is enough.Unless he has some big sponsor that would conclude the deal........ -

Ok,Russians are one of if not the biggest visitors in numbers and probably spending power to finland, but like you say the main man is already in.What use would adding Laguta do to the Finnish GP and is it worth adding him just for that and Daugavpils?ok he is popular in Poland.... I wouldn't disagree with him in,but surely the reality is he would only add a 100 or two to the gate at both Tampere and Daugavpils.Hardly going to turn either of them into a financial success -

That sounds great........but what about this post when i mentioned the good viewing figures for the SEC on Eurosport Europe just a few days ago by a certain Philip Rising? Ok i get it.Just some of the figures, not the ones Mr Rising mentions though -
It's like comparing Klitschko with Mike Tyson.Klitschko might have reigned longer or defended his title more, but my god who would pay to watch a Klitschko fight??????

Sure he was complaining at the start of the season that the FIM told him GP reserve came higher in the pecking order than riding in The Euro Championships and in the Longtrack world championships which is what he wanted to do.Don't think he had much choice. If he turned down the GP spot he wouldn't have been allowed to ride in anything else, which was his preference......Ok it was back last winter, but i think that was roughly his complaint -
Didn't think he should be in the GPs.Didn't think he would do well.Hold my hands up and admit i got that last bit wrong at least 3 Lions on a shirt(well sponsors name really),13 years of hurt........(ain't got a clue what the trophy is called so that ends that.........sure it is still gleaming though

Air Fence Safety Performance - Research?
iris123 replied to Elephantman's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
You say they are not compulsory under FIM rules, then say they are being foisted on clubs.Who is doing the foisting then? And if clubs don't have the money and there is no proof they are better and the FIM doesn't require them for league racing don't you think promoters would be up in arms instead of going out and getting something unnecessary? And that apart from ignoring riders who say they are better Like some have said the problem is proper fixing of the fence, but that is the same as people who ride a motorbike with a helmet that isn't done up -

You don't have any proof there is no proof. You haven't found any proof. That is different to there not being any.I haven't found gold....... -
It would seem the SEC was a fair success tv wise.On average 1,000,000 people saw each final.20% of the viewers from Poland.Guess One Sport would be happy hitting that figure.Pure guess, but i would imagine Eurosport fairly happy as well.

I imagine Vaculik + Laguta would opt for the SEC as their chances of winning more money than in the GPs is fairly high. For those riders who aren't going to be challenging for the title it is better to earn big money riding in Europe than traipsing around making up the numbers and not earning much.Could well be easier to attract sponsors with the SEC being on Eurosport than on some pay for tv channel as well -
Had to twice force myself to watch the meeting further in the hope something might happen. In the end i gave up.This sort of thing isn't good for the sport. How many non speedway fans would persevere more than half an hour? For one of the previous meetings i sat in front of the tv with my son who hadn't really watched speedway before. After the first heat he said "what is exciting about that? They are just going round in circles!!!" I said i'd just watch 30 minutes in the hope he might get into it and i could watch the meeting. He seemed to get interested in the fact that for two or three heats running the rider in yellow fell, but once that sequence stopped,so did his interest and in all honesty i couldn't justify both of us watching so i let him watch some cartoon film instead. Something needs to be sorted out not only in the running of the meeting, but in track prep.Surely it can't be that one rider is just slightly better than the one behind him and the one behind the one in second is slightly worse etc.......Hardly any chance of passing.Even Egon Müller had to say it was a gaters track and first into the bend was more than likely going to be the winner..... As for next year, well Phil did say it was a good thing for speedway when Castagna was made top man in the FIM...........yer right!!!Not a good debut year and next season isn't looking promising going by the latest news

Which Rider Is Involved In The Most Falls And Why?

Going back a bit,Martin Ashby's nickname was "Crashby" i think i am right in saying. He had already acquired the name by the time i really noticed him so i am not sure if it was because he crashed a lot or it just was an easy tag for someone as i don't recall him crashing that much if at all.Didn't Briggo also have a reputation of crashing fairly often when he first came over.Guess it was just over trying as he certainly didn't lack skill on a bike -

Think it seems to be relevant in asking just who the Speedway Star are serving. Are they really giving unbiased and informative stories to their readership or are they serving the people who supply the stories?Do they publish anything about the poor attendances at GPs or at league speedway?Do they criticize track prep at GPs or British speedway?Guess we might get a story about the Polish Final farce, but was there an in depth feature about the farce at Belle Vue?I would hope a speedway magazine has no bias towards any promotion or organisation over a rival -
Riders Who Come On Later In Their Careers.

Hardly. He was a top rider pretty much from the start of speedway in the UK -
I thought you kept going on about the door not being closed on Sky showing the GPs right up until the end as if you had some inside info that a deal was being considered.Just needed a few details worked out.???? Now you are sort of saying the opposite. But i do agree that things should be sorted out earlier.Traditionally though GB is at the end of the food chain and do things last minute.Quite often it has been the case that new teams were being announced a month or two before the season started or maybe my memory is going

Sweden is the big problem for BSI i think.IMO there isn't at the moment even one rider who can bring much to the series and i can't see one on the horizon either. To put two in will bring the series down somewhat.I can't honestly see the benefit of having two riders struggling for a few points every meeting. -

Interested in the likely German venue.Could be a decent year for Germany as it was also announced that they could well be hosting a final round of the new look European Championship as well..... -
From what i read from a Torun fan it was the sponsor who told them not to ride!!! Wonder if he meant owner as it seems the manager and team wanted to ride.Clearly rubbish to have had any hope of Gollob riding.Absolute nonsense.Know of a number of fans who travelled over a 1000km round trip from germany and paid their admission just to see a trophy presented. The boss of one of our teams was totally puzzled by it all,but some of the others do appear to have been happy to join in the "after meeting" celebrations.Just as well i didn't take up the offer of one of the spare tickets going
