  1. I would think it is hard to beat Prague as a place to enjoy a couple of nights, although the speedway is usually poor.If the G is just an excuse then Prague is the place to get away to and you could just be lucky and the track improvements that have been promised for the last 3-5 years really might actually happen
  2. Amazing just how big the country is.Just read yesterday that the Vostok football club, that are in the Russian second division are having trouble financing away matches and have had to drop out of one fixture, maybe the league itself!!!!!!!And that is football,so makes you wonder how the Vstok speedway club manage to finance their away trips etc
  3. The Heinz Beans thing is as Humphrey say's a completely different can of stuff.Hardly compares to speedway. Firstly you very very rarely if at all get someone in the food industry who is willing to pump endless amounts of money into a company just because he loves beans. If we equate Heinz with the BSPA then i am pretty sure if Heinz was fairing the same as Elite Speedway then a hatchet job would be done on the factories producing the product.Factories closed and staff layed off.We wouldn't be looking at getting in some young riders at reserve,we would be looking at closing down many of the tracks and putting riders out of a job.If push came to shove the Heinz boss might quite easily close down pretty much all British production and move lock stock and barrel into a cheaper country like Poland where he could produce the same product far cheaper and you would still get your beans on the plate. Now the BSPA can hardly shut up shop and move over to Poland or China or somewhere cheaper and still give you on your doorstep the speedway league you want......
  4. Trouble is i doubt anyone would say costs didn't need to be cut.If they got rid of all the best riders then people would be saying "I'm not going to watch that rubbish" If they upped prices people would say "I'm not paying that much to watch that rubbish".Not sure what alternative they really have apart from just forgetting no 6 + 7 and following the Danish style and just having 5 rider teams.Maybe 6 rider with one youngster?Of course it is cutting costs, but the hope is that it will build a decent group of homegrown youngsters and that would surely benefit the sport in the long run I don't see the idea as a negative step, just hope it doesn't end up in a farcical meltdown and they have to change the rule
  5. Bottom line is,none of the youngsters will be forced into this.It is a decision they have to make for themselves. They should still have the PL and or the NL safety net. Most if not all the riders in line to be picked should already have decent equipment. From what i have seen most seem to be equiped with much better equipment than they really need.Just last winter i was surprised to see a foreign PL rider selling off 2 or 3 GPlevel!!!! bikes and two!!! vans.....As we know from experience,if the young Brits don't take these spots then you can be sure there will be plenty of foreign riders who will be more than willing. Now,who would we rather see get the chance?
  6. SEC race in Güstrow? Writer: John Wahlberg November 18, 2013 @ 14:00 0 comments. Rumors have placed an SEC-race in Güstrow 2014 Speedwaynyheter.se approached Torsten Jürn who is chairman of Güstrow speedway club, we got us a long chat about how the business is in Germany and also how much a race would mean for the resort and club in its entirety. Many rumours permits the SEC to discuss with you. Can you confirm that for us? - Yes, we have discussed with One Sport for a while now. We have had discussions already for the 2013 season but it did not work for the time of the preparation was for a short time. There is much to do in the arena and many details that need to be resolved. We are steps away from each other for everything to be completely clear, but it looks very positive for 2014. How much would the SEC mean for Speedway in Güstrow and city? - We are a small club and Güstrow is a small town. One Sports has EM to a level that matches the World Series. This means that if we get a race in our city, it would mean incredible marketing for our city in the world. For us as a club, it would be a huge challenge, and of course it would be the biggest event we have ever staged. We all work full time at our jobs and working with Speedway at leisure because we love the sport. Güstrow is a nice town with a really good track. One of the world's best courses. Why is the path so well? - I'm not so sure about that. The shape of the track is almost like an egg with very short straights and wide turns. The track is just 298 yards short. So I think a lot depends on the rider and not so much about who has the fastest engine. Even so, the material is pretty special, it is coal ash.Riders have several lines that go on to find momentum in the four lap and it's not all about the first turn. We also have a very experienced track staff who know how the track should be prepared in a variety of weather conditions. - The problem is that the stadium was built in the 1960s, until 1990 when Güstrow was part of East Germany and the club had a lot of money, but the situation was such that you could not get the material as easily as it is today. After the reunification of Germany the money was gone soon and you could acquire all. It took a few years to recover, but step by step we are there. We jumped off the Bundesliga three years ago after we become champion twice and runner-up three times to put every single euro we earn at the stadium. We invested in new floodlights, new security fencing and even a new fence around the entire arena. We even bought air fence and made many other improvements to the stadium with very little sponsorship help. We are currently working with a couple of hundred new standing on the far side. The next target is the new stand on the start and also a new pits, but it will take a few years. 2013 did you organize U21 European Championships. Something you can take with you to a possible SEC race? - You can not compare these events with each other. Being live on television will mean a lot more pressure. I know I had a good and motivated "team" behind me and I know that we can do big events with lots of audience. What would be a possible Attendance in an SEC race in Güstrow? - The goal is of course to sell out all tickets so we do not sell on the day of competition. But seriously, it's hard to say that we will have to take about double the price compared to a normal race. Plus you will be sent the race on TV and I do not know how many people stay at home for that reason. On the other hand, fans will get to see some of the world's best riders on our track so all over 6-7000 people would be disappointing and I am quite optimistic that there will be more than that. - I hope that the FIM will not take away from our fans good speedway, but that is what they are trying to do now. What is being done now is preposterous and should you need a little common sense on their part. They are simply afraid of the SEC, the victims of this are the drivers that will be banned from having to go and earn a living, even those fans who want to see the best drivers compete. Therefore, I really hope One Sport has good lawyers and I'm sure they will have a plan b too! Tell us about your activities in Gustrow, how many races do you have a year? - Then we chose to drop out of the league, we have about eight to ten events per year plus some races where we did not take admission to junior competitions, veteran competitions and 80 cc except we offer training sessions each week. For next year we have nine scheduled races so far. In addition to the SEC, we have our traditional season opener "Oster Pokal" (Easter Cup) on April 19. June 6, we will arrange Güstrow second junior competition which was a huge success this year. It runs in the old GP system with 24 drivers, and I am pleased to welcome even a few guys from Sweden too! - On May 8, we will have our traditional open competition "Pingstcup" and we hope for crowded as last year. These are the international open competitions. Then we come to stage the semi-finals of U21 European Championship, the German U21 championship and hopefully the German individual championship. We also have "demonstration competitions" with all kinds of Speedway Racing plus "carts", sidecars and so on. Kids can compete with their bikes on the track, then we have rides and lots of other attractions going on all day. It's absolutely free because we hope to attract more children and families to our competitions. It is also something we notice more and more on our competitions in recent years after we made this effort. http://www.speedwaynyheter.se/sec/sec-deltavling-i-gustrow/
  7. Phil is pretty well spot on,but you let the longtrack guys off the hook by putting "all" the blame on Poland.I went to three longtrack meetings here and the presentation was terrible and the meeting dragged on and on and on.The only people to blame for me not going back in the last 5 or so years are the German guys in charge, not the Poles
  8. That is one of the problems i see here.Especially with some guys who might ride in all 3 leagues.Which team will take priority if these is a fixture clash?
  9. I thought it was stated that these guys could ride in all 3 leagues.Well at least some of them and those that don't ride in the NL, but still qualify, will be riding PL.So next year they could all move up on their PL converted average?Really don't see the problem here. And quite possibly those b grade riders could do another year as a grade reserves?
  10. I was just jumping to conclusions as he is an obvious choice here. But ......what if he isn't in the initial 20 riders? How do you go about dropping one of these 20 and get a replacement? Will there be a list of maybe 30 riders,so you have a few reserve reserves? It does say only 20 will be chosen,so could Lambert will be in from the start and maybe King's Lynn won't start their fixtures until he is of age......
  11. Don't think you should go too overboard on how much King's Lynn have spent on Robert Lamberts development. The people who have spent most time, effort and money on his development are his parents taking him around the country and over the past couple of years over to germany to really get him going.Saying that,it will make sense in him riding for a local club,if he wants to. The one thing about the young guys in the EL now is you have to stick with the system. It won't be a quick fix and at the end of the season we will have some great new superstars.Ok,maybe Lambert will be that anyway. But from my experience in Germany it was tried and dropped far too quickly to have any impact.Think the idea only lasted a season before they changed to 2 U21 riders of any nationality. It is clear GB doesn't have the strength in depth of Poland or Denmark,so at first some of the guys will be way off the likes of Lambert. This needs to be in place for a few years before we will see the benefits.Hope this isn't another idea for a year and next year we have the next new idea
  12. They had something along these lines in the Bundesliga a few years back and are doing it this year in the development league with 250cc riders. One of the problems is even at this level is the standard can be quite big and it was often the case that 1 rider won all 4 heats and 1 rider came last in all 4......
  13. Could be another possible headache for the FIM on the not so distant horizon. It seems Wroclaw is to host the 2017 World Games. Now if you, like me witnessed the previous WG when speedway played a part you might think it not something of note. But there is a poll being held by the city as to which sport could be included as an invitational sport.Obviously the main sports are already included and so it really does i think only leave speedway as a major-ish sport in Poland that isn't already in.Of course just because speedway might win the poll i don't know if that would mean it would automatically be included. But if it is,it would seem another ideal opportunity for Onesport.Doubt speedway would have to be just the one dodgy pairs meeting like the one at Plough Lane.It could well be a small tournament and if the money is right include all the worlds top riders..........just me jumping to conclusions at the moment though
  14. Think it is a cost cutting exercise.EL riders to use 80cc Hondas and the NL riders on 500cc
  15. Sounds interesting. This is an American idea, isn't it?Didn't they do one or two meetings with this style(not sure if it was just one lap though)a couple of seasons back when on tour?
  16. Usually in the sauna with a bottle of koskenkorva. Then you sort out all the speedway problems i guess lol
  17. Good idea in principle. It is something that happens in the German development league. Each team has 1 250cc rider that race each other for the team points. But of course they race at the weekends. Not so easy in the UK as Parsloes points out
  18. Not something that would interest me in the slightest.Like i say, there is nothing in a rider doing 59.1 and a rider doing 59.7.Quite likely the only difference is the bloke stopping the watch, but even if it was really digitaly accurate you wouldn't notice the difference. It is just a statistical thing. On the other hand i would be open minded about some 1 lap races from the tapes.Never seen such a thing, and it might be interesting. Ok make that 12.1 + 12.7 or something for 1 lap lol
  19. Not quite sure if you just mean a flying lap for a rider or a heat with 4 riders all doing the flying lap? I have seen flying laps here in Germany. In fact i think Phil Morris was one who competed at Stralsund.Just a big bore if it is the old style 1 rider 1 lap.Couldn't understand the point of it all.How can you tell the difference between one lap and another when there are split seconds between each.... On the other hand the old style flying start to a heat was scrapped because it was relatively chaotic and had to be so often restarted as one rider was ahead......and we don't want that sort of stuff as we have nough delays as it is
  20. The way i understood the statement Phil was that over the period of Red Bull sponsorship, Emil has earnt a lot more than Tai has out of Monster. Not that the current yearly deal is much better.Might be wrong though.....
  21. I'd say most people should get their view over in a couple of posts.maybe we stretch it to 3 or 4 posts, but if after about 15 or 20 posts you still haven't made it clear then ask someone to write it for you or give up.......
  22. Personally think that is about right and about what the sport can support. My opinion is that there are probably too many teams in the sport wanting too many meetings. And i do feel that are maybe too many riders that are never going any where and using it as a glamorous hobby.I'd say if riders are at the bottom level for 3 or 4 years then they are never going to improve and you can't really expect the public to pay to watch hobbyists. In other countries, especially from my experience of Denmark people don't pay to watch hobby riders ride.I like the old style two tier system.Let them swim or sink.We might just get somewhere
  23. It isn't just about results, although this years result should have seen him out on his arsenal on its own.But it is about how you present yourself to the paying public and media. On that front Middlo just let himself down again and again. He is an ambassador for the sport and for the country. We can't afford someone like that in the job.So on that front alone he should have been out.Put the two together and i don't think he would have lasted as long as he did in most other sports.Good riddance. Now let's have someone who can start building up a team that at the very least gets results to match their level,i.e better than the US,and maybe just maybe we can get someone who can get them to perform above their normal level. It is possible if you just look at the US or on the individual front,Smolinski. And it would be hoped the person in charge can also avoid putting his foot in his mouth which seemed to be a Middlo speciality The national manager is supposed to unite the country, not alienate large sections of it.That task it seems is too much to ask of Middlo
  24. Speedway has got itself into a real state. You can't say the SEC is a problem for the SGP with riders getting injured. They have 4, maybe a few more would be planned, meetings. How many do they have in the Swedish or Polish or Danish etc leagues? This is the big problem.Riders ride all over the place. They can sign up to as many leagues as they can fit in.Now the FIM are saying they can't sign up for a speedway competition.Doesn't matter what it is called it just obviously isn't right to do that.If this does go to court,i'd imagine the FIM will be hard put to win and then it could mean big problems. On the other hand i can see where Tsunami is coming from.People say the SGP is boring with the same riders.Well give this a few years and you will just have the same riders pretty much in both series and there won't be a lot of difference.I'd quite like a decent series with riders just below SGP level, but i doubt if the sponsors, tracks and tv would be that interested.More importantly would enough fans? It is time speedway had a big shake up.This might just be the first step in getting the whole thing into shape.Although i somehow doubt it will go to the European Court or any other court......
  25. Results wise can't really do much worse and credibility wise surely better is hoped for at the very least
