I do agree, that it is access to Europe, essentially the UK that is neccesary to their continued development. But it is then strange that British youngsters access to the same doesn't seem to help them to the same degree. Is the main problem at the early stage then or a mental problem?
-
The thing is GWC it is usually at this point someone points out the fact that Australia manage to regularly turn out 1 or 2 decent youngsters with a seemingly poor system with no junior leagues or many meetings
-
Neither.Exactly, would be correct

Oh,it is quite possible i saw you.my friends and me used to call one of the spectators 'Mr no hat'.We used to be behind him as all the people with hats blocked our view. There was also a 'Mr beardy no hat' and a 'Mr baldy no hat' and even a 'Mr beardy baldy no hat' from memory

Was you wearing a hat?

Hmmmmm he came over to get rides on a 500cc because he wasn't allowed to race in the UK.As he had a German licence he could also ride in the German national championships. He never said he was german and nobody else said he was german, but there was some small BSF controversy about it back then.... .It was the same with the Dryml brothers.Laguta was the local wildcard in one or two Latvian GPs,and went further by stating he was taking out Latvian citizenship, but seemed to fail the test or drop the idea.Simon Wigg also had a foreign licence and some like Marvyn Cox also rode in the German Championship.Think he even won it,but nobody thinks he is german Even Ryan Giggs played for England at some level and nobody thinks he is english Groan.................

I'd say he deserved a Danish award more than Lars Ulrich,no matter how good his music is

Sure But in the old system you could win the final without winning any previous meeting. In fact you could be in the final without being in any previous meeting!!!! You might be able to win a meeting with only the one heat win,but in the end it is still the rider who has gained the most points over a whole season who ends up as champ. No flukes and very hard to buy off fellow riders and ask for favours over a season. There is also no chance that you win the championship by riding on your home track because there are so many tracks and some are never used for speedway other than the GP.So no home advantage
-
Of course.Much more

Spot on.Agree with that,apart from the 1967 final,which i sadly missed
-
I am not saying he is at this moment the best, but has a great chance to go on and prove he is,by winning another title or two against some great oppo. The thing with the GPs is that you have to prove yourself in a number of different countries on the various tracks that they provide.Plus, you have pretty much the best riders out there to compete against.Generally there might be one or two that are missing, but that is nothing compared to almost half the field being below standard and only there because of the biased qualification rounds of the one day finals.

We have been through all of this before.Yes,the one off finals had the theatre, the excitement that came from knowing it was all on this one meeting. But the trouble was it was a one track thing and a track specialist could come out on top above riders who definitely were better over a season. As i mentioned the whole Wembley thing skewed some finals in favour of certain riders. It was also a time when riders rode regularly at only about 10 tracks, and it was also a time when 'cheating' was going on a fair bit. The early finals with a points total from quali rounds adding to the points in the final helped to an extent, but i can understand the trouble with a rider who doesn't win the final getting the title. But todays GP series is far far better in ensuring the best rider ends up with the title. That is why Tai deserves to be right up with the best Brits ever and in years to come will quite probably prove to be the best ever!!!

I was at that historic meeting

Not sure any were, but one certainly deserved to be Morian Hansen For his services to the Royal Air Force in WW2 he was awarded a number of awards such as The Distinguished Flying Cross,The George Medal,The Burma Star,The Air Crew Europe Star and the Defence Medal

You are mistaken.Peter Craven rode in a Swedish world final and finished around 10th,i think

Funny,i was only listening to Ronnie Moore's interview with Briggo yesterday, yet again. He does rave about Craven and also Jack Young, plus Vic Duggan.Of course Vic Huxley and Tom Farndon were from an earlier period.I'd love to see all of those plus an Ove Fundin at his peak.Hard to pick one out good thread though,Steve -
Think people are being very biased against Tai.I am no great fan of his,but he has proved to be up with the very best ever and his career is far from over.maybe it would have been better to leave him out until his riding days are over and then we could judge exactly how good he was over whatever period it turns out to be.One thing to remember is that Tai won his titles by riding on a variety of tracks around Europe and the world Fred Williams,Tommy Price and even Peter Craven only ever won titles at home in Wembley stadium
-
Bit confused at that one.......23+ and not done much on the international scene.I would say he doesn't have a great chance of even making a Danish SWC team unless one or two are injured, let alone following in the footsteps of say Bjerre or Bjarne Pedersen or even Klindt,Hougaard

Mentioned this a few times over the years.I wondered about the lack of talent coming through just at the time Bech and Michesen were about 17.Phillip Rising told me on here that Erik Gundersen said the next generation are even better than them.I wondered out loud, but of course Phillip is a journalist of reputation,o he must be right.Fact is,as a regular to Danish junior events at the time,i really was worried at the lack of good riders Now some years after the actual numbers of Danes entering junior speedway has dropped alarmingly...........They will probably just like the rest of us(apart from Poland)have to rely on the odd good to very good rider coming through now and again.Saying that they have a couple of decent youngsters at the moment.Mads Hansen,Frederik Jacobsen,Jason Jörgensen....

Yes.And so were the others in that list if I am not mistaken

Grand Prix Challenge 2017

Would be a problem if they are actually in the competition.Could it be the case that these reserves cannot qualify further?Hasn't it been the case in some previous competitions that reserves are considered 'outside' of the comp?Otherwise, yes a problem
