The continuing decline of Speedway
iris123 replied to wealdstone's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Saw this problem recently at my local club. They normally run a meeting(only the one)on a Sunday and I guess they aren’t happy with the attendances. So they asked fans what day they would prefer,Saturday or Sunday. And it looked about 50-50 to me with the online answers......,. -
Wimbledon tennis works out at around 40,000 people a day for a fortnight.I’d guess the attendances most days are around 50,000 ,but for the finals they only let in a far smaller amount, which drops the average a bit.Whereas speedway is a sport on its knees!!!! Add the fact that it tends to get better sponsors yet people still try to slag off that and other sports like football!!!!
-
It is also a track he knows quite well, not wanting to take anything away from him.But his girlfriend was a start girl there and I think it was her brother and cousin that rode for the track. Robert might not be so strong at other tracks, although let’s not forget he did do his apprenticeship here in Germany. But it really is looking good at the moment for him
-
Strange. You tell him not to rise to the posts, but don’t tell him to stop calling people scum or morons, which he generally calls half the forum!!! As far as I know there are only a couple of people who used to be here who you could rightly call scum.one,a convicted drug dealer, who is now pushing up the daisies and the other was convicted of possessing child pornography.Just because some on here don’t agree with Rob,doesn’t mean we can be called morons and there is absolutely nothing I have posted that makes me scum Bottom line is,it is a fact he goes to Rye once in a blue moon and unless Rye arrange meetings when a blue moon falls on a weekend then the likelihood is Rob won’t be there
-
So you haven't been to Rye for donkeys years, but was planning on going sometime soon.Surely if you told the Rye management they might have carried on for a bit in the knowledge that another fan might turn up once this season? If only they knew the club was such a central part of your life!!!
-
But even when Rye ran at the weekend I thought you said you only went about 2 times in 20 years!!!!Rye can hardly run successfully based on that sort of fan base

Well I saw they were packing out arenas with people watching others play video games and now a couple of days ago whilst going through the channels I caught a bit of the Drone Champions League, where people race drones through a course set out through bouncy castle type obstacles -
It’s ok,Speedibee, alias adonis doesn’t like this forum and doesn’t want to waste his time here,so he said.........oh wait a minute!!! Lol

Yes I agree.Firstly with a franchise system you have to find enough people who are willing to pay in,so that someone can tell them what to do and which riders they can have!!!!Is that realistic? -

A franchise will have say 8 teams in an elite league.Say Someone with money from Kent or London thinks that Sittingbourne will be an attractive place to host speedway then he buys the franchise from one of the clubs with an elite franchise,it could be your team That is how franchises work.It happened to the Munich ice hockey team,it happened to some US team in New York.Just what is the advantage to any speedway team belonging to a franchise?I would think the only person to make money from the idea would be the person or company running the franchise, rather than all the clubs The system works in other sports because there is enough money,in some sports millions to be made and if the franchise say’s we run on Monday night or Tuesday night the stadiums are still packed.I can’t see that being the case that speedway promoters will pay out money so they will be told when they will run.Just look at all the ballyhoo at the moment.Ice hockey fans turn up on a Tuesday and American football have Monday night games.Speedway fans,we are told are special and will only turn up at the weekend.......ho hum -

These franchise things might sound good if you look at the success stories, but can be painful if your team is bought and moved from New York to California or from Munich to Hamburg as has happened....... -

That is why it is ridiculous to try and compare the two sports.Football can offer the community far more and has a higher standing on the community because of that.John Berry is off the mark with brain washing etc Speedway along the way lost its position and speedway is alone to blame for that. You used to get elite people attending and presenting trophies because of speedways standing. The media were interested and a few films featured the sport. It just isn’t possible today for youngsters to turn up at a track and have a go.Football clubs can offer girls, boys, there is even blind football teams all weather facilities...... -
Why?Last season they ran a number of meetings on an off night I think....nothing to do with hindsight. It seems the people running the place made some very poor decisions
-
Surely when you are a member of a league you abide by the rules the league come up with? You can’t just say I am not doing that,it is bad for my club.Well of course you can.You have to leave the league....

One of my all time favorite meetings were the British League 2 or NNL riders championships and it wasn’t all to do with the racing. In fact on one occasion they put bags and bags of sawdust down to get the meeting on.But the great bands of fans from around the country with their different colors, flags and accents made the night for me.THAT was an atmosphere!!! -

In a way it can’t really be as great.Years ago it was partly great because of the sheer numbers that made the great atmosphere. That is now missing,no matter how good the racing is.And because of those numbers it also had significance in the community. The day after and the day of the meeting you would be discussing it at school or at work.I went to school with a number of other fans and later worked alongside fans. But ok I did leave school, but there were fewer people I knew that still went.Things were and are even more so,missing And there is the answer to why there are fewer people posting on here than there were ten years ago.People have been lost to the sport in large numbers,it is only realistic to expect fewer people here!!!! -
Are you for real? The riders are out of work because Rye made big mistakes.Nobody else is to blame. And because Rye made poor business deals, there is no reason others should follow and sign riders on extortionate wages or do you want another club to get into financial trouble as well?

Whilst I agree it is a shame and a hindrance to the sport that there is no venue, the idea that speedway should be in some ‘great big city stadium’ is pie in the sky romanticism.White City or Wembley would never be financially possible in today’s sporting climate.Even back in the 70’s speedway at White City was akin to Queens Park playing at Hampson.750 fans in a 52,000 capacity stadium!!!People have to face the reality of the modern situation -
What I found strange was in Denmark when the ambulance took a rider to hospital and no ambulance could take its place they faced a dilemma. It seems the ambulance has to be in attendance for the safety of the paying public, not the riders. So they could continue the meeting, but it meant all the fans had to leave the stadium or they could wait for an ambulance. Not sure, but I think because they didn’t have floodlights, maybe the fans were herded out?
