  1. The East End was ever so. And it was often immigrant gangs like the Italians, Irish and Jewish gangs that caused havoc and violence. It wasn't just among themselves, but innocent people One such story http://www.whitechapelsociety.com/east-end-policing-in-the-19th-century/ You could also make a case that today, most of the violence seems on the face of it to be between members of the same community. Young black kids seem to be attacked by other young black kids. I went around London including up Seven Sisters Rd and Tottenham during the day without a hint of bother. Had a lovely late Columbian breakfast in a café by the tube station at a very decent price. Think 1.50 for a great Columbian coffee was about the best cuppa and the cheapest price on my recent trip
  2. Was mentioned a few years back, but easily missed I guess. Especially as it was in the Years gone by section ,which seems for some t be buried away and far too hard to find. But mentioned that the track, which looks great especially that pits area where the crowd overlook all the riders, was the old Walthamstow track
  3. Kenneth and Lasse Bjerre Davidsson brothers Bass brothers from Australia Timo and Tepu Lahti think his brother is called
  4. Vic and Ray Duggan Ila and Pepe Teromaa The Kilmeyer brothers from Austria . Forgot their first names Also the infamous Wiesböck brothers. The one got banned for pretending he was the other in a world championship meeting. Alois and ?
  5. You have to register to get the full article
  6. Ah well I have to admit I did attend Xmas mass and I was not alone. The place was packed and I am fairly certain the priest was a Catholic
  7. Michael Collins ? Leader of the IRA. Not sure he ever rode a speedway bike
  8. Are you saying Londoners are all Anglican ? I know some who are Catholic . I saw them going into Mass
  9. I have. No idea what meeting was the first I attended. 1960s, Plough Lane, but I have an Olle Nygren Rosette and even then not sure if it is from the first meeting or a subsequent one. Went to a number of meetings from then up until 1973 when I do have a record of the meetings I have attended
  10. Fitzpatrick is quite a Catholic name for an East Anglican meeting!!! I can only assume he is what my friend from Kells calls a ‘souper’
  11. I did get in trouble for criticizing the Danish language on here some years ago!!! It does grow on you and in parts is similar to German. Kartofler- Kartoffel = Potato But most non English languages at least from smaller countries, you have the advantage disadvantage that it is hardly spoken elsewhere, so english always comes on handy and is often necessary in business. You will often see people from 2 non English speaking countries conversing in English. I have even seen that with two neighbouring countries with sort of similar languages. Germany and Netherlands My kids went to school in Germany to a school that studied in Spanish. That was, not only did they learn Spanish, but they studied other topics like maths in Spanish rather than German !! I know it turned out too difficult for my daughter and she swapped back to doing all subject in German apart from Spanish lessons You also have the fact that mainland European borders have often changed over the centuries, so there will be traditional communities left behind as it were. Germans on the danish side of the border and Danes on the German side for instance. We have Danish schools here and there are German schools at least in the south of Denmark. Vojens was a majority German speaking town around 100 years ago, as was Gdańsk in Poland or places in France etc
  12. I did see one poster from the recent polish elections have an English word boldly displayed in it . selfie !!! No idea why that would be important for a political campaign though
  13. So, you got in on time to the oft mentioned first meeting you ever attended, which also has a thread or two devoted to it !!! Nice
  14. Think that is a bit much for the semi’s at least. Someone might have the same points as another, but qualifies due to more heat wins or whatever. Then basically gets gifted 2 points for finishing last
  15. Good golly miss molly !!! I doubt even dear old Johnnie Hoskins himself went that long without paying to get into a speedway meeting !!! You must be a record breaker gustix
  16. You should have just referred to this item on the much linked to Defunct Speedway Site written by a certain John Hyam( you might know him ?) which mentions the size of the track http://www.defunctspeedway.co.uk/New Cross.htm Also a good reference often linked tohttp://www.speedwaymuseumonline.co.uk/n tracks.html
  17. Very surprised that a veteran and ex journalist should get confused about the size of his first and favourite track !!!
  18. Anyone know if the museum is still there ? Looked a great place, but the link is now dead and I can’t seem to find a new link or reference to the museum on the Torun Plaza site. Strange
  19. Remember him as one of the top riders in the old BL2 from those championship meetings at Plough Lane in the 70s Sad news RIP
  20. Exactly criminals partake in crime and someone always has to be the victim. This rubbish about some good criminals from the old days, ignores the fact there were victims if you rob, cheat, ask for protection money and use violence....
  21. Seems quite strange that someone who has left the country has taken a dig at the changing population and asks ‘where have the white working class gone?’ As if it is ok for them to move to Canada, but not for others to move I had a small discussion with someone on a South London group, who said without really getting to the point they meant ‘Tooting has gone downhill from the 1960s’ my reply was that Tooting was never ‘uphill’ to go down, just the faces have changed
  22. Well after a bit of a delay, it looks like Wikipedia have accepted that Split is no longer with us, thanks to the Star obituary
  23. Yup. In one town in the early 1900s I think there was around 80 German language newspapers !!! Might have been Baltimore. The Heinz ( of baked beans, ketchup etc fame) used to speak german and annually visit the place they originated from, until WWI when they cut off ties.. Love all this stuff Of course Hamburg was one of the main ports to emigrate to America from. Hapag-Lloyd came about from shipping people to the US. Hapag stands for Hamburg- America-Packet-AG (ie company)
  24. I have already posted the reason given...
