Surely they are already commodities, they are signed up & lots of them are discarded if they don't cut the mustard. If the league also had a strict salary structure throughout I can't see it materring to many where they ride & for the new ones at least team loyalty can grow through riding for that team. As for the other points Addy yup your right its gone right over my head

Just a thought, but how about a draft for new & returning riders wanting to come into the EL, put them all into a pool held at the BSPA. It could work along the lines of American Footie, basically the worst teams from the previous season get the pick of the pool, it could include new talent & those wishing to return to the EL, teams could also trade their draft pick, for example: Ipswich, (no offence to ippo fans), as the worst team from 2003 could next season have first pick of the pool, but say they wanted some top end scoring they could trade their pick to one of the top 3/4 EL finishers this season, say Poole, Ippo then get one of Poole's top 3 & in return Pirates get the pick of the best talent in the BSPA Pool, (obviously to fit withn pre arranged points limit, it would asssit the Pirates 'cos they were over the points limit & help Ippo by giving them a strong heat leader, in theory that should in the long run even out teams, make for closer meetings & n o one team becomes the season whipping boys.

Blimey, I am agreeing with a wolves fan, well said 847......, when I started following speedway, we had Cov/Cradley/Leicester/Wolves & Birmingham, the midland cup was a real buzz (pardon the pun!!) & properly raced for, most teams riders were committed to their clubs, with either the odd Long Track or Sunday continetial meeting boosting the earnings of the top riders. You only got to see the likes of Mauger/Penhall/louis etc once or twice a season & it was a real thrill to see them up against the likes of Olsen/Shirra etc, speedway has lost its magic through over familiarity, the EL is basically the same old week in week out, a radical revamp & the spreading out of the riders amongst more teams is a must.

You've got me thinking now mate. I wonder if there's any chance that Mrs Lt will let me mount a Jap in the bedroom. Oh Lt.........., could'nt ignore this one, never had you down for such a kinky pervert............never mind Mrs LT, have you considered how this poor Japanese person might feel about being mounted in your bedroom?, (ooh er missus!!), more to the point how you going to coax them into your bedroom in the first place? Ray Wilson still lives in a bog

Although he "batted for the wrong side" so to speak & I generally have a pathological dislike of all things Black Country, I got to say Jan O was a brilliant rider/racer & seemed like a genuine nice bloke too, he would have looked better in Yellow & Black though!

I have been routing through my old programmes, I have found one with a wimbledon rider called Rudy Muts, I have written his name in the programme so it may be the wrong spelling, I have written "dutch" by his name so I assume he was from the netherlands? The programme was from my 1979 collection, although I have no cover on it so it could be a year either way. Anyone remember him & if so what happened to him? I have never heard of any dutch riders other than wiggy racing on a dutch licence I think?

Is there a decent fanbase for speedway in leicester? what happened to Martin Rogers? Is there no possibility of a revival, even at conference level? -

Its so sad that this track has gone, I was not aware at the time that the CO had sold it, 83' was the year I lost touch with speedway for a bit, its funny I always admired the CO for his efforts at Brandon, without wishing to stir a hornets nest..........................why did he sell Blackbird Rd & was there no chance of another promoter taking over? I also thought Olsen was a demi god, funny how as you get older reality creeps up on you!! -
Seem to recall that Alan Molyneux's (former bees rider) dad at Cov in the late 70's early 80's made a minature speedway bike, damn fine piece of machinery it was too. Used to have a photo of it, but alas I have no longer, can't help anymore than that I'm afraid

Dekker, Don't remember JJ, I assume he was riding for the Brummies, just remember Dryml & the fact he was pants usually & had his one good meeting that year & no it was not a fun meeting, quite the opposite......................Cov lost!!!!

When I first started watching at Coventry in the late 70's, we had leicester, Birmingham, Cradley & the Monmoronites. Shame most of them have gone now, there has to be a fan base for them surely? -
The original Ales Dryml, coming to Coventry with Birmingham & scoring 11 points from 4 rides in the early eighties I think, It was from No4 position if I remember & won the Brummies the match,...................git

I seem to be making a habit of this, rehashing old posts................doh, still at least new members get to see it. I remember driving past the stadium once when i was very small, it looked like a nice stadium, what a waste................ -
