  1. not heard of the name but in the halcyon days riders came and went overnight maybe he was just a second halfer or a trialist
  2. the man that was mr speedway in southampton and stadium and presentation to match everynight was show night charles knott senior (THE GUV.NOR) his sons were good promoters as well and another unsung hero charles foote thats when poole and saints were run by gents
  3. he is banned from the poole pits because he was giving to much info to the away teams and he was there as a poole guest trouble is lew cant stop himself helping others but poole took a dim view of his actions
  4. yes coopers still exsist mainly for producing barrels for decoration ie flower baskets etc but its suprising how many small brewers still use wooden barrels good on them i say
  5. george is still alive and lives in essex i belive he regulary attends functions when ever he can normally being chauffered by peter lipscombe yes george rode for yamouth his average was 0.75 yes 0.75 but he was a bread and butter rider that every team needs
  6. kevin was in england for the anniversary of the veteran speedway riders asscociation at beaulieu a few years back about 8 if i remember correctely a perfect gentleman i had the priviledge of taking him back to Brockenhurst station in my car .by his own admittance he never tore up any trees in england but was a more than useful performer in aussie giving most of the top names a run for their money
  7. my mum and dad went and saw them at the southampton gaumont theatre(now mayflower) the following week dad reckoned they were" pants" live on stage and he was one of their biggest fans
  8. my first race was poole v swindon june 1971 1st race eide cake for poole and briggs and keen for swindon briggs leading by a country mile falls off for no aparent reason gifting poole a 5-1 finishing order cake eide keen briggs(fell) poole won 40-38

  12. in a roundabout way eric broadbelt was accident prone and never reach the heights expected of him he even broke his ankle riding into the back of the grader at either leicester or sheffield

  15. most of the pre war grass tracks bore the name speedways i have several pre war programmes that carry that name on them but were no more than open fields and one after the war shaftsbury speedway in dorset took place on the side of a hill so i wouldnt read to much into the name speedway
  16. evidentely he was an extermely strong man and used to use this to his advantage on the track he often was able to lift his bike over an oppenent back wheel to gain an advantage he was also very aggressive which didnt go down well with somesof his fellow riders and one ex rider who i wont name said he was an accident waiting to happen but still tragic all the same and are you sure it was peter vandenberg in the race i got it on very good authority that it was alby golden(alby told me this when he was alive

  19. there is another thread on this site about tim but he is english used to live at ower in the new forest and run a plumbing and heating firm but now most of his time sailing round the caribean as its much warmer than england he is in good health and returns to england during the summer months
  20. yes declan appeared many times at matchams park ringwood hants in the late 80s early 90s racing a standard mx bike against pukka sandracing bikes he was thrilling to say the least used to drive all the way down from liverpool each week to compete he must lost loads of money i was earning more as a commontater than they were as riders

  22. just been talking to stuart wallace on the phone he informs me that there will be at least 3 coach loads of ex saints supporters travelling down on the day
  23. yes james bond is his real name and as quoted another poster lives on a farm in taunton and he will be at my saints reunion on july 20 th along with his old mates george major and john hitman hart
