When you say the upper class, what do you mean in the context of speedway and especially in the context of Ipswich speedway? I may talk fairly nicely (it was an esssential for my old career) and without the horrible Suffolk twang but believe me, there is no way I could be called upper class....my family on my mum's side are cockneys! Mind you, I 'get' northern humour, my chief bridesmaid was from near Manchester and we spent our honeymoon there (long story but it involves now ex hubby chickening out of his jabs) and my dad is Scottish. Also, I once had a best friend who was Cumbrian born and bred and we never had a problem with our joint humour. Marbles? Don't think I had all of them to start with and with age, they are rapidly diminishing!

SA Titles tomorrow, updates available on the following link http://speedwayupdates.proboards.com/thread/13009/sa-titles-7th-december -
I'm happy with that team, the ones I wanted to be there are there. So chuffed (and relieved) that Adam Ellis is with us again.

Middle son is not going next year due to the cost, £13 a meeting for him is far too much....the downside to him not going is I will lose my teaboy and bag carrier!
-
Quite probably... As you have noticed, I am one of the wavering ones and have been for at least 3 seasons now, if it hadn't been for the Updates, I would probably have stopped going last year. My reasons are not because of the rules, or the alleged shenanigans, the stadiums, the music etc though (although the shenanigans have not helped), mine is because I cannot bear seeing so many riders being so horribly hurt, it's just taken the wind out of my sails so to speak. Sometimes, I am so scared checking the results just in case there is yet another bad injury, call me a softy but it's just having a bigger impact on me now than it did even 5 years ago.

I agree we need to somehow entice or even keep the youngsters we have. I've stated on another thread about my youngsters who have stopped going, eldest stopped 4 years ago when he turned 16, the reason? Too high a cost for someone still in compulsory education and too high a cost even at student rate whilst in 6th form...and now, moved away from the area for university. He still loves speedway and would go if he could but it was just too expensive for him as a young adult and as a result, has only been to one meeting in the last 4 years. Middle son went to his last speedway meeting this week just gone, the reason? Too high a cost for someone still in compulsory education and looking further ahead, still too high a cost for someone in 6th form even at the student rate. Youngest stopped going two years ago, although his reasons are not the fault of speedway or the promotions, he just couldn't cope with the noise or surroundings (complex autistic). To be honest, it was a blessed relief for me, him and probably those people around us as it was a blooming nightmare when I was taking him along with us! To entice the younger generation or to keep them coming once they are 16, the admittance fee needs to be affordable before promoters even start thinking about jazzing up the presentation etc. If the cost is too high, they won't come through the gates....

Felt I had to post in reply to this, I fell out of love with the sport back in 1994 due to increasing costs (went to the first meeting of the season and that was it) and had absolutely no interest in returning for almost a decade. I was enticed back however due to the GP's on television and an old friend badgering me to go to a meeting whilst we were on holiday..and so, I returned to speedway in 2002. In my time away, I didn't chase up the results, I didn't keep up with the news, speedway was completely off my radar, I had completely lost interest. Never say never, although you may think a fan has been lost and is not worth the effort, you could be very very wrong.

No Sky Speedway = A New Opportunity
crazysue replied to Steve Shovlar's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I wouldn't pay £20 a month for it......I cancelled my Sky sports earlier in the year due to the cost and now just use Eurosport for the GP's. That said, there have been some good ideas on this thread and for those who rely on televised meetings, maybe because they cannot make meetings in real life, it would be a godsend if a way forward could be found. -
Four years ago my eldest son stopped going to Foxhall because he turned 16, at the time, he had only just started in 5th year (year 11) and was in compulsory education...he was too young for a student card as he was in compulsory education but too old for child rate, so we were faced with paying full adult rate for him to go. He went from never missing a meeting since he was approx 8, to only going to one meeting in the last 4 years. Even the student rate was too much for him in 6th form and now he has moved away for university. Tomorrow, middle son is going for the last time, same story as above but he has been going even longer as he hadn't even started school when he started going. Both absolutely loved speedway but financially, once they hit 16, it just becomes far too expensive...especially now compulsory education has been extended to 18 (17 or 1st year of 6th form/college for the current year 12). Even if they get a part time job, at the current rates, it would take up all their part time earnings that they can safely earn before it has an impact on their studies, leaving nothing for the extras which come with that age. Speedway needs to move with the times, children can no longer leave school at 16 and get a full time job, the best they can hope for is a part time job for a few hous a week to fit in with their studies. Just over 4 years ago, there was 5 of us in our little group..,,next year, there will be 2.

Also available on Speedway Updates...... Jenga, if there was a problem, you really should drop me a private message to let me know and I can always see what can be done to ensure it doesn't happen again in future....I am quite approachable really and I do so hate people getting antsy or rude with others, especially on my site. I do wish we could get over this rivalry or competition in regards to meeting updates, sites working together or helping each other can only benefit the fans.
