  1. Well go to Peterborough then. For unpredictable entertainment I'd rather see Baseby than Monberg.
  2. The Brits are favoured in this League as it was originaly set up to give young British riders a chance to develop their skills. Otherwise why bother with league at all? Why bother spending money on 2nd halfs when the money could be saved and used to bring Scandinavians over who are a ready made product? Also I think the NL is classed as semi-professional so when it comes to foreign riders competing the Department for Work and Pensions get involved with work permits etc.
  3. Cycling. Riders often opt out of the World Championships be it road or track, in order to preserve form for other events. World Touring Car Championships. Not all the best tin top drivers are in that series for varying reasons. WSB. Some riders miss out due to not finding the funding for a team place or racing in other series for better money. MotoGP. See WSB. So what is your definition of a proper World Championship then Parsloes?
  4. The problem with this debate is that people can't see the woods for the trees.
  5. Hence why he was on the verge of greatness as IO said. We know what he went on to achieve after '86 and before then he was a constant threat in world championships and other major events.
  6. So come on then Onion, give us some examples to help prove your posts are not just ignorant rubbish. Something like all world champions wore the number 4 race jacket for example.
  7. Are you on drugs or something? It doesn't matter which format has been used over the years, one of the pre season favorites usually wins. There have not been many 'shock' World Champions. Zenon Kasperzak didn't win a World Final and it wan't because he had an unfavorable draw. He was a class rider, just not good enough to beat the likes of Nielsen, Gundersen etc at the time.
  8. Yeah I'll agree with that. 1936 to 1994, World Championships were difficult to win. 1995 onwards, World Championships are difficult to win.
  9. If I remember right the clip in question broke. Also I believe he got in trouble for calling it a Jubilee Clip when it was actually made by another company, Terry or something.
  10. I was thinking more of status. I've seen amateur meetings that have had better racing than some British Finals but the atmosphere and sense of occasion just isn't quite the same.
  11. Just think of each GP round as an individual heat in an old style world final particularly the 2 day event at Amsterdam. NZ next year is hardly going to be comparable to a British Semi Final at Dudley Wood.
  12. How do work out that each GP round is the equivalent of the Overseas or Inter-continental qualifying events of old? Surely the GP challenge is more comparable. Each GP counts towards finding the overall champion so would be considered quite decisive in finding the World Champion.
  13. Probably wouldn't happen in England at all. It would require the BSPA to apply to host the event and they probably wouldn't bother. After all they gave up the rights to promote the GP round in Britain.
  14. Bet there are more fans attending all the GPs added together than there would be at a one off World Final held at Cardiff.
  15. But the qualifying system used for the old one day world final was fundamentally flawed. The Intercontinental riders didn't meet the Eastern Europeans until the final. Due to travel restrictions forced on the Eastern Europeans it meant the majority of them were of a lower standard than the Western riders. What about when the Final was held at Wembley? British league riders had a chance to race there several times a year but for Russians and Poles the final would be their first experience. No system is perfect. Personally I would like to be able to watch 11/12 GPs a year on telly as opposed to the slight chance of seeing one meeting.
  16. About the same time as the MotoGP, World Superbikes/supersport, Euro F3, World Rally Championship, World Touring Cars, Motocross, Trials etc start.
  17. Haha! What a joke sport. A sport that operates with ridiculous rules like that will never catch on with the public
  18. Prestige. The fact the competitor can say he was the best that day. A small piece of history. Extra kudos. That smug feeling on a Sunday morning. Financial reward on the night and also for when approaching potential sponsors.
  19. Maybe that's because he was so dominant
  20. Well the coverage of the GPs on Sky helped keep some of the Leicester fans I know interested in speedway over the years. I've met plenty of people who are only aware of the sport due to the TV coverage of the GPs on Sky sports. That has also encouraged a couple of them to view it live.
  21. Well don't watch it then. I enjoy it and on nights when the GPs don't clash with other fixtures at Leicester there is usually a few of us watching it on my TV. Some of my mates watch it when they are at MX events in their motorhomes. It is a very popular series.
