  1. Maybe he owes them one for the ruling allowing Newman on his PL average, or keeping Buzz off the heat leader list.
  2. Can help a wee bit.... 1979 WJ Cearns Trophy - Larry Ross. Laurels - Bruce Penhall 1980 Cearns - Bo Petersen Laurels - Larry Ross 1981 Cearns- Bobby Schwartz Laurels - John Davis 1982 Cearns - Larry Ross Laurels - Simmo 1983 Cearns - Jessup Laurels - Hans Nielsen In 1984 the Cearns Trophy was due to be run on 27th September, but my programmes after that date don't mark the winner. The 1984 final meeting was a handicap challenge against NL Hackney (testing the water for the Dons dropping down for '85?). The programme describes it as "Laurels Night", but the second half was run "In Remembrance of Tommy Jansson" - there had been no seperate Memorial meeting in 1984. In 1985 the front cover and racecard for the final meeting call it the "W J Cearns Memorial Trophy", the fixtures page call it the Laurels as does the "meet the visitors" page and Team Manager Pete Brown in his notes. Neil Middleditch was the winner. The Cearns meeting wasn't held again until the 1991 closure afaik. Hope that helps.
  3. Agree with Belle Vue and Wembley. Also have to throw in late 60's, early 70's versions of Wimbledon, Poole, Coventry and particularly West Ham. Though obviously the CH in my avatar is the best ever.
  4. As I said before the better example is dropping Gafurov for THJ just before the end of August. So no moral high ground there for the Pirates.
  5. Ok. What about when the Gaffer "stepped down" to allow THJ to come in for the "play-off push". If you want to stop it have a deadline day at the end of July. But wasn't it a couple of seasons ago when there was an outcry because injured riders couldn't be replaced during the play-offs?
  6. Love their enthusiasm and can deal with "Whoooo's". Natalie and Scott in the BT studio have been a massive plus this season, big improvement on the old Keith Huewen days. One thing that irritates me about Kelvin is he often has a great opportunity to give us an anecdote or insight from his own career, but he generally jumps straight back to talking about the current meeting. Example: Pearson might mention Wimbledon and Kelvin's first seasons, Kelvin says yes - great days, but Coventry really need to get a heat advantage in this one. It's as if there is a director in his ear telling him to just focus on the meeting and not wander off the meeting! One of the things I love about the Sky Cricket commentary is the way guys like Atherton, Nasser, Bumble can go off topic and chat about whatever takes their fancy - until Nick Knight comes on and gets us back to the minutiae of the tactics.
  7. Not totally sure we should be quite so overjoyed at finishing second, but compared to most expectations that was a cracking performance. Good to see Cookie and King come good in their latter races. Much, much better meeting than last night. Congrats to the Poles, they were pretty awesome.
  8. That was dull. Lost interest after a few heats and started channel hopping. Hope tomorrow is better.
  9. I see the logic, but find it flawed. It's like teams in football who fight to get into the Europa League and then play their reserves when they're in it. At least it meant Monstrous Joe didn't have divided loyalties tonight and could spend the night rooting for the Aussies.
  10. http://greyhoundbet.racingpost.com/#news-story/story_id=2126385 Looks like the new mayor is throwing the decision back to Merton Council - which seems to prefer the Football plan.
  11. Thats good news. If their machinery is up to scratch I can see them making it a 3 way battle for the top spot. Last couple of times the Russians have taken the WC seriously they have come up with shock wins in Vojens and Bydgozcz. Hancock will no doubt score heavily but the other 3 Yanks only got 5 points between them tonight.
  12. I was there that night. Only heard about the gun incident in latter years. The main incident, as far as the crowd were concerned, happened between Middleton and Mike Gardner, with the latter whacking the former over the head with his crash helmet. According to the Backtrack article a couple of years ago the incident with the gun in the pits happened a couple of heats before, which tallies with my battered programme as Heat 10 has Middleton excluded and Triggy in the race. The Gardner incident happened in Heat 12. I do remember the car driving through the crowds on the back straight with Middleton hiding beneath a blanket. For a 7 year old in his first full season of Speedway it was incredibly exciting!
  13. We went to Coventry to watch him in the next round where mechanical gremlins put paid to his chances.
  14. Were you at West Ham the night Triggy rode his socks off to get 3rd in the British Final? Has to be his career highlight?
  15. Echo what others say. At least we got the right decision in the end.
  16. Agree with the sentiment, but not the analogy. Gorillas are quite intelligent animals and I certainly don't think people go to the zoo to laugh at them. Don't think a Goriila would continually post on this thread saying people are daft for posting on this thread either. Even they would see how ridiculous that would make them look.
  17. What is this "putting the money up"? You agreed the 10k bet. Onus is now on Robert72 to declare who he is. Once that is done and it is accepted that he is a former rider, then the money becomes the issue.
  18. On the "Should ex-riders pay to get in" thread Speedibee posted the following.... Robert 72 , is Robert Jackson . used to have a second account called Jackson 2 Bwitcher then posted... The only Robert Jackson that appears on the excellent speedway database is this one.. Rob Jackson Born: 28.10.1944, Bradford, England British Clubs: Crewe (1969, 1970) Berwick (1970) Bradford (1970) Year..Club..Meetings..Rides..Points..Bonus..Average..Maxima 1969..Crewe..2..4..2..0..2.00 1970..Crewe..8..23..24..5..5.04 1970..Berwick..1..4..6..0..6.00 1970..Bradford..1..2..1..0..2.00 Read more: http://wwosbackup.pr...n#ixzz4EINb12Ff Whether thats true or not god only knows (or cares). As for Robert72 - for someone who is obviously so proud of his being an ex-rider and has mentioned it countless times, I find it strange you do not confirm who you are. Your reticence will only confirm the growing, widely held opinion that you are a teller of tales. Like This Quote MultiQuote
  19. Pretty sure Ian Thomas wrote in his Autobiography that any challenge to an opposition's line up was best left to the last minute - especially when you knew you were in the right- as it left no time for alternatives to be found.
  20. Hope you're using a pencil. Good wins from the back in 6 and 7.
  21. 5 posts copied in order. I'm struggling to see anybody having a "melt down" as claimed by you in the last one.
  22. "most Aussies start a lot higher" Obvious implication, otherwise why mention "Aussie"?
