Just aquired these Wright Wood original Photographs. Can anyone help with these identities please. Thanks. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jim.blanchard/photographs2.html

All a rider can do is go out and win races. A comparison would be that Giacomo Agostini, (15 times World Champion, 122 GP wins etc etc) is all the all time best rider in road racing bar none. Jim Redman whom I know, only won 6 world championships, though in his meetings with 'Ago', he beat him more than the other way around. Ago will never be over took as the number one rider, but he could not beat Jim very often. Does that make sense as a anaolgy?

That is brilliant Norman. I'm just thinking would Jack Young be the last Australian to be a world champion????

Here is one for you Norman/Anyone. Peter Craven winner of the Tom Farndon memorial trophy at New Cross in 1959. To his left is Johnnie Hoskins, to his extreme right is Tiger Hart co-promotor and who is at Peter's immediate right?? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jim.blanchard...ven_hoskins.jpg More Photos from John Chaplin included. The one of Ron Johnson/Jack parker tossing the coin at a OZ v. England test is terrific.

Well done Norman a nice touch. Did you receive CD with New Cross photos I sent you last week? (All your gifts seem all to be coming at once ) Thats right Steve, Gus Kuhn ran a dealership at the Stockwell-Clapham area but for many years after Gus retired it was run by his son in law; Vincent Davey. When he retired it was sold off to a company called Wheels International that were really Harley dealers that tried BMW's but gave them up and went back to Harleys. Not sure what's happening there now though. Another old rider that run a bike shop in London was Joe Francis for many years. There was another ex-speedway rider that ran a shop in South London but with alzheimers kicking in, I just cant remember it for the minute. Anyone know? I'll know it straight away if you do.

Nick, looking at the picture its quite a low res scan or you have reduced it right down because it breaks up if I enlarge it 50%. It looks like to me that Tiger is injured and is holding on to the left arm of the guy to steady him. I would say that it is more likely to be a friend or relative or his dad perhaps. As a contemporary photo the guy looks much older to be another rider/competitor. Tiger also appears to have a plaster across his nose in the shot. Hope that helps. Can you send me the one of the West ham riders warming up the bikes in the pits. Thanks, Jim

I think you will find that the globe was yellow with a blue background Crouch. They could have used them for some earlier qualifying rounds though most of the pictures I have of PC he wore his Belle Vue one at the end of his career. Did they use them at the International and the Laurels perhaps etc? Anyone know? http://freespace.virgin.net/barry.briggo/bb_3.JPG Briggo wearing one.

As discovered by a lot of riders Rob that was not even in Maugers class.

I do not think he was having a go at you Norman personally. You do a vey good job with your books and I am always buying them as they are inexpensive and of course you help me out with material for the web sites anyway.
-
Sure I can do that. That is why I keep producing tribute web sites. For the reasons you outline. I want to preserve why speedway was so special for me and share it with anyone that is interested. For Free.

Here with Peter Craven on the night of PC's fatal crash at Edinburgh. Sorry but it is the only one I have of George Hunter in my collection. http://freespace.virgin.net/pete.craven/petec5.JPG

Thanks Frigbo. The date in Ivans book is the 4th. Which is obviously error.
-
Maybe, its as good as any I guess. I would have thought that someome would have the report from that qualifying round on the 4th of July 1963 in an old Speedway Star. I've looked but I do not have it.
-
Sorry Crouch I disagree with you. In 1963 Ivan Mauger won the Provincial Final of the World Championship rounds at Edinburgh with 14 points, he also won the Provinicial League riders championship the same year, so he was hardly uknown. Also, according to his book 'Triple Crown Plus' he took part in World Championship qualifying round at Southampton on the 4th of July 1963 and scored 5 points. Peter Craven was also in the same round as was also Dick Fisher. That is that qualifying round in my photo I would say. "In my first ride I crashed heaily with Dick Fisher and had a very bad shaking and was quite dizzy and dazed for the rest of the meeting". His other rounds were at Swindon and Oxford. He must have raced against Peter Craven......and forgot
-
Hi CHK, Of course that's possible but what are the circumstances of the photograph. World Championship qualifying round perhaps at Bannister Court? Anyone throw anylight on it.
-
I can recall that the great Ivan Mauger claimed somewhere in an article, or in one of his books that he never ever raced with Peter Craven. I have collected many photo's over the years and this one I printed myself from a negative supplied by Alf Weedon. It features Dick Fisher and Peter Craven leaning on the fence at what looks like Southampton. (Anyone confirm that much?) To me between them looks like a young Ivan Mauger. I would be very interested if anyone can throw any light on this. My motive is not to make Ivan look anything other than perhaps unaware that he might have raced the great PC at sometime in his illustrious career. http://freespace.virgin.net/pete.craven/fisher_craven.JPG

When I was going to Wimbledon from Deptford to deliver Ronnie Moore's flywheels for Ken Brett, who would replace the the crank pin and big end bearings and balance them for Ron. I would get a 202 (near Cold Blow Lane) bus from the end of my Street to New Cross bus station. From there a 53 bus to Kennington Oval, then a tube from there to Tooting Broadway then a walk down Garrat Lane to Plough Lane. Usually, Colin Goody (Met him at the VSRA dinner this year after 40 years. Smashing bloke treated me like a little brother.) would take me home after the meeting, which was very late though. EDIT: Quite a few more photos' to go on NX web site later thanks to Mike Kemp.

Managed to get the bare bones of it up but a lot more things to add and many more photo's which I still have to sort out. This is the address for the time being; http://www.art-in-motion.co.uk Anyone want to contribute anything to the memories section, it would be most welcome. Some riders of that era have agreed to add their thoughts too. EDIT Also, updated gallery section of Peter Craven tribute site with more unpublished photographs. http://freespace.virgin.net/pete.craven/gallery.htm
