Berwick 2017 50th Year
topsoil replied to balderdash&piffle's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
I think the captain and Liam were nailed on after last season. Great to have Doolan back, couldn't ask for a better role model for captain and team man. You also get the local rider in the team and hopefully he can build on the progress he made last season. Lewis Bridger? Some will say a gamble, could turn out to be an inspired signing, only time will tell. Certainly didn't see that one coming. -

The only advantage to building up an asset base is that you can command a loan fee should you decide to loan out one of your assets to another team. Very few full transfers these days as the majority of clubs just cannot afford them. -
Still have the Pairs. I actually like that meeting better than the GP.

Yes he was, a real trier. He would be my choice if the club was to go for a 2 pointer. -
What Makes A Good Team Manager?
topsoil replied to Bigballs's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I thought Scott Courtney did a very good job as Berwick manager in his first season. Worked with a struggling team all season, the next injury was never far away, a team lacking a genuine number one, but stayed totally motivated and positive all the way through the season. Don't know if the guests for missing riders were all his choice, but the vast majority were spot on. And i witnessed first hand some of the work he did behind the scenes on track preparation and laying the covers. Very committed and passionate about the club. -

Wouldn't argue with this team, but I fancy that Garrity, Branford and Smith will all be hot commodities and will end up at higher profile clubs than Berwick. Would like to see Bellego return and would be happy to see Liam, TJ and captain Kev back again. -

It doesn't matter who it is that is wanting to takeover, if the current ownership are not willing to sell unless they get their price. And I fear that they are willing to face the prospect of there being no speedway at all, rather than to sell the club for less than what they want, even though they don't want to play any part in the future themselves. -
Rye House V Newcastle Koc Semi 1st Leg
topsoil replied to StevePark's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Plenty of riders have made a career from being a one track specialist. If he can thrive around Rye House good for him. Shads if Branford wants to think about moving away from Rye we will have him in a heartbeat up at Berwick. -
Isle of Wight have just proved exactly that this season. They have worked extremely hard at promoting the sport this summer and from all accounts this is paying off.Glasgow have done the same (many will rightfully so point to the fact that they will probably have a better budget than most) but they too have increased their fan base as well. You have to work long and hard at promoting the sport these days and make sure the punters are entertained and want to come back. So much competition.

Belle Vue Vs Wolves, Grand Final 2nd Leg, 5/10/16...
topsoil replied to Col's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
What a brilliant meeting for the neutral like me. I'm a huge fan of the Belle Vue track, IMO the best in the Elite League. But this meeting, like so many at the NSS this season, has shown everything that can be good about speedway. A big crowd in excellent facilities, a great track providing fast, exciting racing. Heat 13 was as good as you will see anywhere. But there were so many sub-plots throughout the meeting. Zagar and Cook beating Woffinden for a 5-1 Richie Worrall beating Woffinden when the World Champion was in the black and white helmet Wolverhampton pinching 3-3's in heats 11 and 12 when Belle Vue were expected to get heat advantages For me Peter Karlsson was the star of the show, closely followed by Fredrik Lindgren and Joe Jacobs. But Belle Vue lost it on Monday night. I've said it each year since the playoffs were introduced, I would like to see the team who finishes top of the league rewarded in some way. Perhaps name a Shield after a worthy name from the history of British speedway (the same goes for the Premier and National leagues)? But I admit to being a fan of the playoffs. Just my opinion as well, but I didn't see anything to get excited about with either the Lindgren / Cook coming together (it's the Grand Final, I expect hard riding and it was a little bit of handbags) or the Belle Vue fans giving stick to Woffinden and his response in the interview. For me it added to the atmosphere on the night. I just think we all get a bit too sensitive at times. I also thought Craig Cook gave a brilliant interview straight after heat 15 when he was obviously disappointed. He did exactly the same after the last two British finals. I've got a lot of respect for him after that. -
Really did not see this result coming, Newcastle were finishing the season very strongly and I thought they would go deep into the playoffs. Lambert's absence costs them in the League Cup and now in the Playoffs as well. Never an ideal situation when guests influence the outcome of Playoffs, in a good or bad way, but that's what we have.

Don't suppose we would get Robert Branford, or for that matter Simon Lambert, but both very handy riders round Shielfield for their averages. -

Robert Branford was an entertaining reserve each time he visited with Rye House and Simon Lambert always scores well on his visits to Berwick. Would be happy to see either of those in Berwick colours next season. Would like to see Bellego, Doolan and Jorgensen as a heat leader trio and Liam Carr made big strides last season. Wouldn't mind Stuart Robson either. Whether we can attract any of those riders who knows. Just knowing speedway would be back next season would make me happy. -

Those pair do a hell of a lot of work behind the scenes that goes unrecognised. I only hope that any new owner, whoever he may be, i've never heard any rumours, keeps these people on board and also gets the supporters club back involved. There was a lot of good work done last year on the commercial side of things, the hospitality suite was used nearly every week, let's build on that to put the club on a better footing. -

Agree with everything there, the SEC has been more interesting than the GP, going to different venues. I've always liked the Pairs format, at least you get a chance to see team riding, unlike the World Cup. In an ideal world I would like to see it expanded to include a second division, to get the likes of Italy, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia, Norway, Finland etc to see if it gives the sport in these countries a kick start.

I'm sure when it comes to making changes your opinion will be given the credence it deserves

Nice to see "tw@ts" from Newport taking so much interest in other teams' affairs

I'd be the first one to back Scott Courtney after the job he has done this season. This is remember his first season as a manager. Think of all the injuries and shuffling of riders he's had to work with. He's stayed positive, always backed the riders, his work behind the scenes goes un-noticed (I witnessed it first hand one day with track covers). If Berwick do come back next season I hope he is retained as manager.

Finding it strange that people are having a go at Robert Lambert on here. I actually find it a refreshing change in sport that somebody has actually missed an individual meeting to recuperate for a team meeting. How many times do you see GP riders miss several meetings only to save themselves for a GP? Couldn't agree more with Montie either, regarding the shape / width of tracks. As the bikes are getting faster and faster and the way the modern bikes behave, if you want to see good racing, you need wider tracks.

He's been a great captain and role model through his Berwick career. But still managed to score more than Cook, Worrall, Wells, Vissing and Summers.

Berwick V Rye House (7pm) 10th September
topsoil replied to crescent girl's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Brilliant meeting, the best of the season. Some great racing and passing in nearly all of the races. If every meeting was like this the crowds would be flocking back. TJ was outstanding, looking very fast. Five passes on the night from Tom Perry, who thankfully cannot gate. Great reserve pairing he makes with Liam, who is finishing the season on fire. A word for the visitors, Kennett and Robson were as good as usual, both had great races with TJ. Rob Branford always goes well around Berwick and tonight was no exception. Great way to finish the season. Hopefully the meetings on Monday night and tonight will have persuaded any would-be buyers out there that the club is worth taking over. Everybody went away talking about how good the racing was tonight. Give the fans more like that and they will return. -

I cringe every time the camera or mic is pointed at Gary Havelock. Here comes another pulled face and a whine at the ref. -

That's harsh. You are basically telling somebody to go and kill themselves. You must be proud.
