  1. Don't think that you understand the libel laws very well - obviously you cannot libel anyone who is dead ... but those living can be libelled, even by a dead man, and sue the a**e off anyone who repeats those libellous comments.
  2. Was doing commentary on a series shown on Sky Sports from the National Hot Rod Championships - boring as hell but huge crowds ... how do they do it?
  3. only problem is that he left the BBC last year - hence the fact that he no longer does football commentatires for them - and works as a freelance now
  4. Surely part of the fun when watching the Sky transmission of Cardiff is to see how many times Greeney gets told to f*** off, really this was quite mild compared to last year when it appeared that no-one wanted to talk to him. And another thing - having the two pit reporters just shows up what drivel Sophie Blake asks - perhaps she should stick to modelling for porn magazines as that rambling interview with Nicholls was toe-curling. At least JG asks questions that have to be answered. One point for riders though - if they really find the TV so intrusive then ban them from the pits altogether. Just remember that they may retaliate by making sure that sponsors logos are obsured from their broadcasts, or withdraw their money altogether
  5. Once English footy goes Cardiff's not left with much - rugger, few Welsh footy internationals, some concerts - and a huge debt to pay back. Might even be in a position to get it a bit cheaper or even on a different date as one of the stadium's major users PS Why not Hampden for a European Grand Prix, Glasgow's just as good a weekend out and Edinburgh, Glasgow, Berwick and Workington could come up with something special to go around it
  6. On Monday night's Sky programme Jonathon Green claim that NP told him he just went for gap and when he got there there wasn't one Made me chuckle, but I'm not Bjarne
  7. Jimmy .. badly injured when he clashed with Bradford's Dave Baugh on the back straight at Shieldfield (some, including me, would say the youngster got fenced for having the audacity to try and pass an old hand). When he came back he had throttle and clutch on same side ... never really worked too well because the mechanics (physics rather than men/women in greasy overalls!!) of it don't really work. Shame, he was a promising young rider
  8. Elizabeth Taylor (Mrs T) and son Ken who kept Berwick going for a decade or so and also dabbled at Newtongrange and Sunderland. Don't think people realise how small a town Berwick is (around 25,000) and to get crowds of 2-3,000 was quite some achievement.
  9. .... oooo hark at you posh southerners
  10. ... two mammoth southern tours in the 70s with five of us crammed into a Transit van with two settees and various sleeping bags acting as hotels. Both set off from Darlington tour 1 Saturday- Canterbury Sunday - Eastbourne Monday - Exeter Tuesday - Weymouth Wednesday - Poole (last two may have been other way around, memory fails!) Thursday - Wimbledon Friday - Hackney Saturday - Berwick Tour 2 took place three weeks later (had to pop back to college for exams) Sunday - Scunthorpe (off day to make up for postponed meetings) Monday - Reading Tuesday - Crayford Wednesday - Poole Thursday - Wimbledon Friday - Peterborough Saturday - Cradley Happy days, long gone. Always enjoyued the southern tracks, they got me used to the super-slick raceways we enjoy today
  11. You are so right. Come on fellow Englanders! You can't have it both ways a British GP and then an English GP. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's only fair ... they're happy to have a Welsh Assembly when they want their own laws and a British Parliament when they want handouts and subsidies to pay for it
  12. Would fear that 90,000 of the 108,000 seats might stay unsold unless they race it at the smaller stadium within the complex where Barcelona's second team play
  13. Sorry but the better the riders then the less chance of mistakes being made and so the less chance of overtaking - regardless of the quality of the track. It's not a new phenomenon in speedway, it's not even unique to our sport. Formula 1 is not the most exciting form of motor racing ... it is simply where the best riders race. GP speedway is no different. Ivan Mauger didn't win six titles because he was the greatest racer but because he consistently came out of the second bend ahead. Peter Collins won only once because he didn't, Mark Loram has the same problem
  14. Chris Morton, Peter Collins, Mark Loram, Joe Screen - riders I would pay lots of money to see race. As a previous poster pointed out mecahnical geniusses can make contendors out of very ordinary riders but the faster they go the slicker and smoother tracks need to be for safety reasons. I'd rather watch a racer like Mark and any of the above ploughing through mounds of dirt in a bid to overtake than the "missed the gate why bother" merchants who are taking over the sport
  15. Didn't Smithy once fall off when he was doing an under-agfe exhibition ride and didn't want the ambulance men to take off his leathers as his girlfriend had drawn smily faces on both knees
  16. Now there's a novelty a Sweaty Sock thinking England (sorry Team GB) got what they deserved
  17. So what was the BBC's excuse - and that is all it is - for the 70 years before the Sky deal was signed?
  18. Think I got Guiglielmi mixed up with Shirra - knew it was the cheating Weegies tho
  19. Didn't Gary Guiglielmi ride half a season for Glasgow under-age in the 70s? ... eek smillies out of control, Helllllllllllllllp
  20. Mark Hall? No Mark Hall was Walter Elliott - allegedly a bank manager who wanted to keep his ID secret from his bosses
  21. From tonight's Manchester Evening News THE man known as Mr Belle Vue to staff and visitors at the Manchester showground for nearly 40 years, has died, aged 88. Jack Fearnley joined Belle Vue as business development manager in 1946 while doubling as a player with the Belle Vue Rangers Rugby League side. Over the next four decades, e went on to run virtually every aspect of the world-famous showground at Hyde Road, Gorton, as general manager. This included being promoter for Belle Vue Aces speedway team and the stockcar racing, organising boxing and wrestling, running brass band events including the British Open Championships and travelling the world to book acts for Belle Vue’s annual circus. He had overall responsibility for day-to-day operations at what was then the world’s greatest zoo and showground, including amusement park, ballroom dancing, rock shows, exhibitions and conferences. After retiring, aged 66, he and his wife Laura moved to High Lane, Disley, and then to Southport where they settled. Laura said: “We lived ‘over the shop’ at Belle Vue for many years and Jack was on call more or less 24 hours a day. “He loved Belle Vue and everyone knew him. “It was a big part of his life for nearly 40 years and he always regretted it had not been possible to organise a rescue operation to save Belle Vue.”
  22. Come on the BBC can't show Grand Prix highlights because Sky have paid for the exclusive live rights and Channel 4 show highlights having stumped up for the privilege. Had the BBC shown any interest in speedway for the 70 years before Sky came on the scene they could have had it all wrapped up. The only reason they are interested now is that Sky have show the sport has the audience that the BBC always denied existed ("Can't justify speedway old boy, too minority don'cha know, not the appeal of the Boat Race or rugger old bean") Easiest way to cover their own incompetence, claim it's someone else's fault and the gullible will bite!
  23. Skegness didn't last too long ... although certainly more than one meeting, back in the depths of time the likes of Celtic Park were used for just the odd meet
  24. Sadly more people miss it than ever bought it ... hence its disappearance
