  1. This article is quite illuminating about Crystal Palace http://www.bmrc.co.uk/championships/cpalace.html
  2. 8 July 1964 Brandon Stadium Great Britain 56 Soviet Russia 52 preceded by Golden Helmet Match Race, Nigel Boocock v Ove Fundin There was some broadcast by BBC on Sportsview with Peter Dimmock - I wonder if any of it remains! A truly wonderful meeting in front of how ever many thousands of fans, with Plechanov and Samorodov holding out against the Brits until the final few races IMHO - the best meeting of all time
  3. Was any consideration given to . . . Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site? Hope something comes of all this
  4. Still there! http://www.yell.com/listings/DoFindListing...'Gaunt/Pubs
  5. Nick won't be at Ozchem as it clashes with Swindon's 60th to which he is committed
  6. Excellent set to see - if you look at the site on Live Search Maps, using the birds eye view, the outline of the oval (and banking) is quite visible Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site?
  7. Got to be either The Torch at Wembley on World Final night or the pub across the carpark at Wimbledon Stadium on Internationale day Happy memories!
  8. Just wondering - can anyone find "the old stadium steps" on the map? Would be really really interested to know!
  9. Wombwell : Speedway racing took place at the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium. Wombwell entered a team in the 1930 Northern League. The sport was revived and operated in 1947 and 1948 when the Colliers raced in the National League Third Division. South Yorkshire Sports Stadium was redeveloped and is now the site of an industrial estate. Wombwell Sports Stadium (formerly the Dorothy Hyman Sports Stadium), which is close to the site of the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium is now the home of the South Yorkshire Kart Club, an MSA affiliated Kart racing club and also Wombwell R/C Model Car Club, a BRCA affiliated Radio Control car racing club. Wombwell FC share the same venue and part of the kart track runs parallel to and the length of the football pitch.
  10. Details of Barrow are at http://home.clara.net/barrowfan/Tracks.htm
  11. Ellesmere Port still stands, visible just to the west of the elevated M53
  12. Thanks for that, Norbold - much appreciated, good to hear the news Looking forward to my first visit for the High Beech celebrations next month Ta!
  13. Some of the best maps are at Live Search Maps, which include birds-eye views in many urban locations Just had a look at what I assume to be the old New Cross site situated at the end of Hornshay Street, off Ilderton Road If I'm correct, on the green area, one can make out the outline of the track - or am I seeing things that aren't there? If someone else has a look, can they find the old stadium steps referred to? Would be very interested Cheers
  14. Just what is going on with the Museum? No website, the Barclays no longer involved Can someone enlighten us please!
  15. Hope the quality of the publication is better than the blurb which contains the "word" TRUELY
  16. Yes, and Carl Blackbird, no doubt The old stadium site is bounded by Wiltshire Road (Todd?) and Somerset Avenue (always popular visitors!) Off Abbey Lane close to the site , by the way, is Byford Road ! And just along Parker Drive is Norwich Road etc etc etc!!!
  17. Sadly, I don't believe that Tiptree Close, Peldon Close, Galleywood Drive and Danbury Drive reflect any of the history of Leicester Speedway Not aware of any "Hunters" streetnames
  18. Sorry to shout but ANY NEWS YET????????????????
  19. 1. Blackbird Road 2. Owlerton 3. Dudley Wood
  20. Perhaps the extra room is needed for all the fishmongers stalls now expected on the day!
  21. She died at the beginning of 1987 at the age of 77 (b 2 Nov 1909)
  22. Echo the comments re Shawn Moran, who I remember particularly as one of the best at the art of team-riding, particularly when he had a spell as quite a regular guest for Coventry Bees
  23. In those days, it was an annual pilgimage to the Internationale, which usually had a better field than the World Final, and carried a first prize of a brand-new speedway bike In 1965, there was so much expectation and anticipation to see Charlie Monk and Ivor Brown in the field against the ex-NL stars (Fundin, Nordin, etc, etc) that the crash and the lengthy delay in dealing with the aftermath was such a big anti-climax, in front of a very large and noisy CH contingent who had made their mark on the occasion long before the racing got underway It would have been very interesting to find out just how Ivor would have competed in this meeting, but we were never to find out I only met him many years later when he was a member of Loughborough Bowls Club in Leicestershire, where he was a very competitive player, although he had somewhat of a unique style of delivery (and no, he didn't wear a great big white t-shirt, just a normal white shirt and club tie!)
  24. Didn't he topscore in the very first BL match in 1965 Bees v Heathens with a 12pt maximum?
