Midland Red replied to snapper-racing.co.uk's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I learned something from Millard on Saturday night about the Grands Prix which I didn't realise before "From the semi-finals, it's every man for himself" So what was the idea of the first 20 heats - team riding or what? - perhaps that's why there were 20 processions But that can't be right, because in each of the 20 heats, one rider was disappointed By the way, Emil has a Polish passport -
Re : Mountford, Ron leads Ashby, Martin of Exeter 68-1 Just a thought - is it Man Mountford, or actually Col Cottrell ?

Thanks guys - brilliant replies and clarification of the location Hope this link works http://maps.live.com/#JndoZXJlMT10cm9vbit3...TIxODc0OTk5OTk4 Pity there's nothing left to see of the track Looking forward to Leicester's third venue - hope it's as good as Blackbird Road was Thanks again PS The link only takes you to the crossroads but move NE with birds eye view and the wedge is clearly visible

I know that Leicester Super was on Melton Road, but can SKS give a more precise location for this track, please

Much to the present Mrs Red's disgust ("not another book!"), I've just received my copy, purchased via Amazon from Orbiting Books, for £6.59 plus £2.75 shipping, total £9.34, delivered in two days Suggest this route to anyone who still needs a copy - and they are mint, not used! - well recommended Looking forward to settling down to a good read now!

Your Most Memorable International Test Match
Midland Red replied to bazaar3's topic in Years Gone By
8 July 1964 Brandon Stadium Great Britain 56 Soviet Russia 52 preceded by Golden Helmet Match Race, Nigel Boocock v Ove Fundin There was some broadcast by BBC on Sportsview with Peter Dimmock - I wonder if any of it remains! A truly wonderful meeting in front of how ever many thousands of fans, with Plechanov and Samorodov holding out against the Brits until the final few races IMHO - the best meeting of all time -
Was any consideration given to . . . Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site? Hope something comes of all this

Excellent set to see - if you look at the site on Live Search Maps, using the birds eye view, the outline of the oval (and banking) is quite visible Re 75th celebrations, what a great idea for a meet-up, and how about a plaque commemorating both the anniversary and respecting the tragedy of Tom Farndon on the site?

Got to be either The Torch at Wembley on World Final night or the pub across the carpark at Wimbledon Stadium on Internationale day Happy memories!

Just wondering - can anyone find "the old stadium steps" on the map? Would be really really interested to know!

Wombwell : Speedway racing took place at the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium. Wombwell entered a team in the 1930 Northern League. The sport was revived and operated in 1947 and 1948 when the Colliers raced in the National League Third Division. South Yorkshire Sports Stadium was redeveloped and is now the site of an industrial estate. Wombwell Sports Stadium (formerly the Dorothy Hyman Sports Stadium), which is close to the site of the South Yorkshire Sports Stadium is now the home of the South Yorkshire Kart Club, an MSA affiliated Kart racing club and also Wombwell R/C Model Car Club, a BRCA affiliated Radio Control car racing club. Wombwell FC share the same venue and part of the kart track runs parallel to and the length of the football pitch.

Some of the best maps are at Live Search Maps, which include birds-eye views in many urban locations Just had a look at what I assume to be the old New Cross site situated at the end of Hornshay Street, off Ilderton Road If I'm correct, on the green area, one can make out the outline of the track - or am I seeing things that aren't there? If someone else has a look, can they find the old stadium steps referred to? Would be very interested Cheers
