Rugby League Comes To Sheffield Owlerton ?
Tigerite replied to Phil's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Its not been confirmed that this is happening, a spokesman for the Eagles was on Look North earlier and said they'd had talks with the stadium owners last Friday and it had gone well. So I guess we'll wait and see -
Rugby League Comes To Sheffield Owlerton ?
Tigerite replied to Phil's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Sheffield closed down for 2 seasons between 1989/90 after Maurice Ducker pulled out. After Hillsborough Disaster and Taylor Report, the old wooden seating on the homestraight was torn down and replaced by what you see now, the pits were removed from behind the homestraight stand and put on the second bend. The 3rd/4th bend/backstraight terrace were closed when the stadium was reopened in 1991, after investment during the years they have reopened and been brought up to safety standard and the pits brought back to the 4th bend, but the back-straight is only opened when the crowds demand, which sadly is not often these days. The backstraight was opened for Speedway World Cup in 2002 when over 5,000 rocked up but only been used a couple of times since. I believe Owlerton has a 4,500 capacity with backstraight closed, which is plenty for speedway (PLRC is usually around 2,500-3,000 mark) and I don't believe the Eagles get those kind of numbers. Some work would need doing on changing rooms and pitch to accommodate Rugby, but speedway would be unaffected. Hopefully would mean getting rid of Stock cars from Owlerton. -

Think the tracks have alot to do with it Paul, the Peterboro track is awesome and the Ashfield track isn't quite as good. Of course I only visit Ashfield once or twice a year but it looks very hard to pass unless a rider in front makes a mistake and you can fill your programme in after turn 2 on the first lap. Must say I enjoyed Sheffield meeting at Plymouth on Friday for the racing alot more than yesterday's meeting even though Sheffield had a poorer result. -

Agree HT, with the way Koppe was riding compared to Knight, he should have had 7 rides tonight and should have been in Ht8 and 12 and Knight in Ht13 for Albin. Think the Hall/Wells pairing isn't working either, put Ricky back to 5 and Facundo to 3 as it gives the side much better balance. Well done to Joe and Damo, they have come in for criticism this year but done well in the last 2 meetings, let's hope that continues. As stated after Saturday at Rye, we should have between 4/5 extra points to play with, so hopefully can strengthen the team and get ourselves moving in the right direction for the second half of the season.

Just had a look at the Tigers website and updated rolling averages are on there, they only include Premier League meetings and not PL Cup meetings so according to rule 17.6.2 and 17.4.4 of the SCB Regs we cannot replace the 5point assessed guys until 4 home and 4 away PL meetings even if we wanted to. So assuming we have no rain offs, we won't be able to change the 5 point assessed riders until after the Berwick home meeting on June 8th, when we will have completed 4 home and 4 away in the Premier League. Attached link with current averages are below, not good reading to say the least with current team total average of 33.66 http://www.sheffieldspeedway.co/statistics13

Seem to remember two of our worst ever defeats in 2007 as well. 75-15 at Kings Lynn and 69-23 at Rye House in the PL final, even last years team wasn't that bad.

Well was it ever in any doubt??? Lol Outstanding meeting again as Friday was, the Fen Tigers were obviously up for it and rode really well and with a combination of falls from Ashley and bike problems for Steve it didn't look good for the Saints. Thankfully it all came good at the very last moment with Ashley and Richie in the last race and the Saints won in one of the most unbelievable meetings ever. An brilliant advert for National League and good as anything if not better than EL/PL has provided this season. Hopefully Neil and Rob will reconsider their decision to not do NL next year and allow this combined Sheff/Scunny team to defend the title. I for one have enjoyed following this team and found the idea of a combined team quite refreshing. Sheffield and Scunthorpe have a friendly local rivalry in PL but hopefully the NL team will continue and benefit both sides in the future as the Prowlers did for us 10 years ago.

Oh yeah Dave will be there haha, can't remember the last time he missed a Sheffield meeting PL or NL. Good to see you too mate and a good travelling support from the Fen Tigers. Nice to see a decent crowd at Scunny as well as there have been some shockers there this season. I was personally very disapointed when Sheffield decided to stop running a NL/CL team a few years back. A lot of good young riders came through the ranks in those teams and made the Sheffield PL team and the racing was always good if not better than PL. Sadly poor attendances ended that. Think it will be a bit closer this time as Sheffield won 65-25 on my last visit to West Row in 2008. Always good racing from my visits there in the past. See you there mate! Well weather permitting we'll be on the backstraight/3rd bend
-
Good number of Sheffield fans going down on Sunday to support the guys too, hope to join forces with the Scunny fans there;)
-
Totally agree, I've personally enjoyed Sheffield's involvement with the NL again this season. I'm sure Neil/Rob will hopefully try and work something out

Fantastic meeting and awesome racing! Seen 60 odd meetings this year and that was the best meeting I've seen. Well done to Sheff/Scunny, they were brilliant and most of the points coming from the back. First time I've seen Heeps and he was impressive and was a one man show for the Fen Tigers. So 29 points is a huge lead but us Sheffield fans know that has been obtained before after a 30 point comeback against PL Champs Edinburgh last year. So is defo not over yet! Looking forward to Sunday

Just seen on the BSPA website that it has been rearranged for this Friday at Scunny: http://www.speedwaygb.co/homepage Looks like Sheffield/Scunny will be weakened for this with both Worrall boys missing.
