  1. As an Ipswich fan Dan has been a revelation…. As he admits himself if you can’t learn from Doyle and Emil who can you learn from Also the family are so nice … Dans dad regularly runs kids around on the bike after the meeting and Dan always chats …. A credit to the sport that family

  3. Unfortunately your last line says it all......and to me, a collector of Test Match programmes dating back to 1928, a crying shame. Why no Test Matches again this year? We have so many foreign riders here, surely we can pick a day for a Test match somewhere? Oh well, I'll go away for another year I suppose!!!! Sadly!!

  4. I don't know Dan or Joe at all, but just looking in from the outside they seem very respectful and not spoilt little kids like some others are... hope they both can go far in the sport.

  6. I suspect you are onto something here a sort of match of the day highlights style programme for speedway - 1 hr including the best heats from all the tracks! A studio style presentation + one or two ex riders as experts. The only issue would be maybe getting the footage from all the tracks!

  7. In any recognized team sport there are official records of international caps. This is part and parcel of the game, and in this respect speedway used to be no different to any other team sport. Peter Oakes always included the number of international caps for each rider in his Yearbooks. It would be interesting to know the numbers for our current riders, but sadly I could not find out. Where are they to be found? I wonder if there is still someone out there who keeps record of the speedway riders' international caps? Too bad, if nowadays no one cares about it.

  10. TV viewers are usually watching another channel because they are unwilling to pay £32.00 a month.

  11. At the time meetings are broadcast live there will be 8 minutes of ads per hour(between 6pm-11pm). So you have to expect a meeting to last a minimum of 20 minutes longer plus 30 seconds intro and outro per ad break. Speedway is a sport made for TV but I fear not live, its needs to be a hour prepacked programme, covering a couple of meetings and a couple of additional races of incident. Dont expect all 15 heats from a meeting they would drop the poor ones. Now with the limited concentration span of Z's & Alpha's a 60 second race is the ideal length of time to appeal to a new younger generation of fans

  13. Over the years Speedway has been transfered from one channel to the next & if you want to watch you need to pay the subscription. I only got Sky sports for the Speedway & once they stopped covering it I stopped paying for sky. In the early stages I felt that our sport was made for TV but now I feel it is so drawn out to suit a 2.5 hour time slot it has lost the meaning of "Speed". I'm sure we all remember the second half races that there is seldom time for at todays events. I don't think TV is helping Speedway at this point & now having to chase after a different channel again. The SGP is good but I can do without the domestic racing I'd rather go along to a track & watch from the terrace & believe my money is going into a speedway club

  14. Ipswich Belle Vue Sheffield King's Lynn Leicester Birmingham Oxford You can basically split them into 3 groups. Ipswich are clearly the best side and you have to believe they'll comfortably finish top and win the play-offs as long as they avoid injuries. The next two should also easily make the top 4, Belle Vue's strength in depth gives them the edge over Sheffield and I think they'll end up beating them in the semi-final. Then you have 2 sides competing for that 4th spot. Both look decent teams but Leicester will miss Lawson and so King's Lynn will just make it ahead of them. Birmingham are stronger than last season at least and possibly not that far off a team that could challenge the two above. They'll have a few nights where they're all on form but also take some hammerings as it looks a team that will suffer from not being consistent enough. I didn't particularly rate Oxford's side last year but it was one that was capable of finishing 4th until they kept weakening it, can only hope for their supporters sake that they don't do that again as they already look unconvincing.

  16. Also helped that a couple of senior Sky sports executives in late 90s tlll early 2000s used to go Speedway on a regular basis. Once they moved on it meant Speedway did not have the internal support that it used to have

  17. I suspect that the City Council placed some restrictions on how high the lighting levels could be when the track was built.

  19. Sadly most sports commentary teams now have to carry a female presenter to show " equal rights" and all that stuff. Speedway is no different to Football, and Cricket (where the male commentators seem to be in the minority) Wouldn't mind if they got their jobs on merit. Dont think BSN are beyond criticism either, their "team" has driven me away from subscribing to their coverage. They all tend to state the flipping obvious, and actually add very little to the vision on screen. They just dont know when to keep quiet , and when to comment. Their lack of in depth knowledge of the sport is often cruelly exposed. Tatum is probably the best of the bunch of the ex riders , an eloquent speaker with some public school phrases that he pulls out of the hat... but tries too hard to make every heat sound like its "super speedway ". Sadly Nigel Pearson left a huge gap in speedway sports commentary 😞 Wonder how long it will be before we get more sophisticated race analysis , like lap by lap timing, average speed and time over the first 30 yards etc etc.
