It’s the basic principle of the more they rev the louder they are and the original silencers were straight through ones till about 10 years ago, then they put a metal block half way along the silencer which caused extra back pressure and heat so engines had to be altered to suit the back pressure and heat shields were introduced because the silencers were getting so hot, this was the cause of the cheating when riders were drilling holes in the block and then the current silencers have the same hole in them that the cheaters were doing, it’s writing stuff like this and reading it back you realise how stupid speedway really is4 points

The 2valve/4 valve argument is largely redundant, it’s has no real bearing on the current state of the sport, bikes are no faster now in real time speed than they were 40 years ago, what has changed dramatically is the speed of the back wheel, engine revs now are ridiculously and unnecessarily high, japs revved up to around 6000, 2valve Jawa revved up 7500 revs, 4 valve weslake were up to around 9500 and upright GMs to around 11500, the modern GM can max out at around 13500 revs although during a race you would be lucky to hit 12,000 revs but as I said earlier overall times over 4 laps haven’t really changed, the increase in revs is causing the tyres to disintegrate and it’s causing the tracks to disintegrate and it’s also made the bikes flat out power rather than throttle control, the modern silencer has reduced the usual power down to about 2000 revs, anything out side that usable rev range and you will not go anywhere, imo the introduction of a 10,500 rev limit via the rev limiter, a better tyre and a better silencer would make the bikes easier to control, you could also do things like smaller cam lift or heavier flywheels or softer compression to reduce the overall revs of the engine, it’s not too hard to implement these measures but unfortunately the sport is run by the riders for the riders via the tuners so don’t expect anything to change anytime soon4 points

Can we just take it as read that any rider who was killed in action 'left us too soon' The most complete list is here: https://speedwayinmemoriam.yolasite.com/3 points

I know nothing is likely to change but hope we get the Tigers vs Comets more than 1H, 1A next season. Both sides take a good away following and certainly generates interest this end. It's a travesty when you think Poole/Oxford raced each other 8 times this year. Something has to change, and if the reason for lack of meetings is mainly down to Oxford running 3 sides, then it's an absolute shambles. I fear that it's just going to be the same old BSN groups and then the same league format.3 points

There’s a case for handicap racing there then. If some riders struggle then get them out first and the “good” rides can pass them. Personally it matters not how good or bad a rider is at these so called technical tracks, if you don’t gate you don’t win - simple. Jake’s as wobbly as you’re going to get at this stage in his career but if he gates at these technical tracks he gets points. Makes me laugh how NSS can be deemed a throttle jockey track when it’s the most technical out there from a speedway racing point of view due to the amount of lines to either guard or mount an attack. If technical is popping out of the gate and sitting on THE line a la scalextic shows more skill than moving around the track effectively then I’m happy to leave them in their happy ignorance.3 points

With very little profit though.Better winning everything in Championship than going bust.3 points

I see your point but the throttle jockey track hasnt had any negative effect on Dan for example when it comes to tracks like Cardiff and Leicester. Not the "technical" tracks around these days like there used to be.3 points

If you can't tell the difference between Jason Garrad riding around and falling off on his own, and Vinnie Foord riding around and dangerously taking off an opposing rider(s) because he doesn't have the skill to control his speed - then I'm not sure your opinion is worth listening to. Sorry.2 points

Don't see why so many people have a problem with this post. If Lambert rides as well as he did last year, then it will be interesting - could mean decent races against Lawson, Brennan & the Cooks. Lisa never said it would help Oxford win the Cup, merely that it could be interesting. She's entitled to her opinion, why are so many people bothered by it?2 points

Papers are renowned for telling the truth, probably a planted story to try and get people through the door for tomorrow night’s meeting. If true which I doubt I would be disgusted an Oxford fan.2 points

Ellis at BV would be an interesting one... Always think that there is more to come from him.. Might sound daft, but I think he is a fair bit better than his average in the UK suggests.. With his mate alongside him maybe he will flourish and reach the level many thought he could get to four or five years ago...?2 points

Unless it’s the NL where they added half a point on to the limit just so a rider could get a team after every other team had built theirs2 points

This really is a vile thread. The lad is learning and is no doubt going to be a very good rider. The OP should be ashamed of himself for starting such an awful thread.1 point

2 Valve/4 valve, Upright/Laydown the difference is the progress that Riders/tuners want & it appears they want an engine that revs way more than it is required to do so. many things have changed over the years in speedway & we all look back to say how great it was way back when. Todays engine as a a laydown is much the same as it was 40 years ago. The insides have changed, to achieve the massive amount of revs todays engine make they have moved to a short stroke engine which makes for smaller flywheels & bigger pistons to get towards 20,000rpm & then fit a limiter to reduce it to 13,500rpm. The only time an engine might go over this is on the start line when the engine is not under load. The quickest solution would be to limit the bore size this would increase the stroke to make 500cc & dramaticly reduce the upper rev limit also reducing potential noise levels. With lower revs it would also reduce maintenance costs for the rider. This would also increase the useable rev band making the machine more rider friendly for those that choose throttle control over twist"n"go1 point

Was all postive from his time at the Comets, I think it helped as he has a real respect for Steve. On the flip side, if he doesn't respect someone or a track it really shows through and rightly so I can see why he can be classed as all the names he gets called on here. Some people like Troy seem to thrive on it, but more often than not he was a joy to watch and wouldn't be a surprise if he picks up our Rider of the Year award. I guess the sport needs characters like him, one thing is for sure he deflected a lot of the usual heat from Cookie this year 😂1 point

Apart from Harris and an extent Flint this years Team was a disaster.Maybe not rushing things this year.(probably know line up though)1 point

If you read my post again ,it was just generalised assumption,of what might happen.i was just taking in the extra to run in Premiership as opposed to Championship. If you want to argue among yourself please go ahead.1 point

Never a case of going bust, just wanting to pay all bills on time. They don't do it just for fun do they? MF said at the time that costs were around 30% cheaper in Championship. Bearing in mind many costs are 'fixed' no matter what level of speedway we're in, the extra costs relate to riders and their deals!!1 point

I agree that overall times over 4 laps haven't changed significantly since the 2 valve era, so what lead to riders going in this direction to where we are now? It must be factored in though, that the 2 valves were un-silenced, so was the move to higher revving engines a way to combat the restriction of the silencer when they were introduced? It seems that every time a new silencer is introduced, that engines have to change to adapt. Or are there other factors that have led us here?1 point

Never gonna be Batchelor after the comments he made about berwick track1 point

The limiter was introduced and the limit is set higher than the actual revs achieved during a race, I brought a new anlas tyre last year for the upright championship on the Isle of Wight and used it again this year, so it can do 10 races when the limit is lowered to around 10,000, as bad as the tyre is it is being expected to do a burn out for 5 mins at 11,000+revs, that’s asking a lot of any tyre1 point

So if three more teams do come in where are the riders of sufficent level coming from . Will they go with 6 man teams as this would free up 6 riders from this years teams. Will they up the average limit for championship riders allowing them to stay to aid development. Its going to be intresting to see.1 point

Yes maybe not worth the risk after a series of falls and concussion can take a long time to recover from.1 point

I know what he/she means? but there wasn't a problem last season when things weren't great? This season, one would hope for a better team/race-track, meaning a better product on display, which surely wont/cant be any worse than last ?1 point

He'd be progressive massively until he got to a technical track... Maybe he should have signed to ride for the Cubs also to get a better handle on the Leicester track. He'd develop a far better rider on the technical Leicester track than throttle jockeying it around Belle Vue every other week1 point

Nah I think Ellis will go to Belle Vue and Ipswich will end up with Doyle, Rew, King, Sayfutdinov, Thompson, Jenkins and a new number 3 (possibly Musielak or maybe Brennan)1 point

Heard he was on an upright.....still could sell it to Barker if Ben is looking for an upgrade....1 point

It's Different times I suppose. Throughout the 70s,80s and 90's we had young talent coming through by bucketloads, but that was because we had a great feeder program called grass track. Now we have kids starting out in the youth series under Neil Vatcher. They just progress through the ranks and ride against each and because of the lack of riders compared to yesteryear, they all get a team place in the NDL. They then progress into the CL and as we have witnessed this season, even in a very low standard CL they are not good enough. How many of the riders who made their debut over the last two season in the CL would you say have a bright future? Young Luke Harrison, Killeen, Dan Thompson Look the best contenders to me. Some of the others look so far out of their depth and wlll never make it. That is not their fault. It's the system.1 point
-
Think it will be 40, certainly hope it will be. I suspect the powers that be want to delete championship to become a tiny bit better than NDL in order to make premiership look so much better. Despite the fact that championship has been the best league for many years. This deason has been a disaster fixture wise and the fact that particularly 1 club is against 2h and 2a because they run 3 teams is not good for the whole sport, let them drop their championship team or allow 2h 2a1 point

What do you want a medal? This is all a bit daft isn’t it? Why stop at top 4? Ipswich have a stronger top 2, Sheffield have a stronger top 3, and a stronger top 4, Ipswich will possibly/probably have a stronger top 5 and the one that really matters, I think Ipswich will definitely have a stronger top 7!1 point

Is it though? For me it's always been weak. Only really Brennan has come out of the system and done ok. But yes, it should be scrapped, it hasn't delivered what it was meant to do & that get more homegrown into the main team. Most just end up going backward and stuck in the Championship going nowhere. The hope was to find the next Bewley & Lambert but that just isn't happening. The system should just be adopted by the Championship. In the Premiership, I think Brits U23 should get a 25% reduction every year unless they establish a 6 average. That would work better imo.1 point
