  1. A very happy and well deserved retirement, had his knockers but overall I think a very good rider in his day and a decent bloke. A great servant to British Speedway.

  3. Excellent piece in today’s Daily Mail by Oliver Holt https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-13020021/OLIVER-HOLT-Ordinary-heroes-stood-bulldozers-save-cathedral-sport.html

  4. We didn’t have dispensation. We followed the rules. The rules will say Dan’s on an average of about 12, or more. By all means sign him though!

  5. I had many late night chats with Brian online with a few glasses of wine. He said he worked better fired up. Nice chap and sad news. R I P Brian.

  7. It is being widely reported on Social Media that ex-promoter. and all round speedway fan, Brian Griffin has passed away in his sleep. As a promoter, Brian was (in my opinion) ahead of his time and I'm confident in saying that the opening night at King's Lynn when Brian & Waggy were the promoters was probably the most lavish & spectacular presentation you will ever see of any speedway meeting. Brian used his connections within the film & TV business to put on a show that was considered by many to be outrageous, but spectacular it was. I was travelling from the South that night having been working in London and the 'Movie Premiere Searchlights' could be seen for miles away. Nobody within a 10 mile radius of Saddlebow Road that night would not have known it was the beginning of a new era for King's Lynn speedway, albeit as the Knights, rather than the stars. It has to be said that several riders, notably Simon Wigg & Chris Louis benefitted from Brian's friendship. Not everybodies cup of tea, but I for one think that speedway could do with more Brian Griffin's (and indeed Grahan Drury - its been a bad week for Speedway promotion). RIP Brian, thank you for the memories

  8. Hans has been a fantastic servant to speedway and british speedway too, it was heartbreaking to watch him struggle last season not only to score points but at times even to ride the bike, he is a far better rider than that, I can remember him having some amazing meetings round monmore green as an away rider

  9. And at Berwick , Peter Waite never signed a rider until February some seasons

  10. Ah, the email mailing list - I remember it well , and yes that was where i initially met him, and then with his sponsorship of both Wiggy & Chris before he came to Lynn. The outpouring of grief on his Facebook page is very strong, and its obvious from there just how highly respected he was in his chosen profession.

  11. Well said. Yep very sad news to wake up to today. I got to know him via the old email forums donkeys years ago and in later years when i moved up to london spent a good few nights out and about. He was still a big fan even many years after his involvement ended and was a lovely chap. Will be missed by many. Back to lurk mode for me now but just wanted to comment. Cheers.

  12. I think the salient point is that the allowance was granted with the full agreement of every other team in the league. It's called democracy.

  13. OR get a rider in so they come to 37 points and put forward the case that the limit should be lowered and other teams have to change

  14. Can't like it, so RIP to Brian. Agree, we had some top riders around that time, and came very close.

  15. Have heard that the last signing is still to be nailed down, can we open talks with the higher authorities to get Dan in on a 5 if its good enuf for Glasgow surely we can have special dispensation

  16. I'm torn on this one, it's absolutely a common sense decision as we don't want riders like Perry missing out and its essentially a training/development league but as a look for speedway in general its not good. All in all though it's a better outcome than the lad not racing in the NL.

  17. That is sad to hear. Think he was the one who came up with the Silver Machine theme and his financial backing enabled signings like Rickardsson, Crump, Adams and Pedersen to happen 1999-2001. RIP.

  19. Sad to read this morning on Facebook that ex Kings Lynn co promotor Brian Griffen has sadly passed away - some will say who I guess but Brian and Nigel Waggstaff gave the club two great seasons 1999and 2000 when the club should have won the league title but was pipped by Eastbourne on the last meeting of the season .

  20. Playing devils advocate here but all Redcar need to do is find a rider with a higher average than the points they currently have left and ask the bspa to up the limit slightly… precedent has been set by Edinburgh so happy days haha.

  21. Not for me. I applaud them for improving the dimensions of the track and trying to improve their product, and its interesting to see what they've been doing and how. And at the end of the day the motorway blade they have there which has been in photos will smooth it all out to a billiard table before the season starts anyway.

  24. It’s a development league. A 16 year old kid going to miss out cause of 0.05 of an average. Common sense for once has actually been used.
