  1. This is typical GB speedway. You have to have a poor season drop your average in hope that you get aTeam Place somewhere the next season. It’s a joke.

  2. No, but many people realise that what they are getting is very often nowhere near the value of what they are paying. This is something that those running our great sport keep ignoring.

  3. Yeah…..and don’t see why Marko thinks it will make a difference to our enjoyment of winning.

  4. It is but how long are they going to keep trying? Losing serious money every year is no good for him and no good for the sport. I hate to see good people losing bundles to put on speedway fixtures

  5. Leicester team is all sorted if the points limit and amount of teams competing remains at what was agreed back in September's mini AGM then the Leicester team will have a real international feel to the team . More will become clear shortly with the new owners announced If it increases then a lower order rider will not be in place and an Eastern European rider will be in.

  6. I really feel sorry for Nigel. You’d think apart from the usual business like challenges running a speedway club would be fun. Running Birmingham Speedway feels almost like bordering on the impossible !

  8. Maybe should have typed this in bold... A true font of knowledge and someone who truly lived through the halcyon days of the sport and covered it too... Always good value on here to get a debate going, and often, stirred up..! RIP John...

  9. Chris Holder for Tobi and Dan Gilkes for Ashton Boughen and think that’s our 2024 line up providing no curve balls at the conference next month

  10. Boris put a message on a bus saying how much better off we'd be if we left the EU and a lot of people bought that!!

  11. Peter Schroeck basically confirmed Nicholls and Masters will be back next season in this week’s Speedway Star. ”We have an arrangement with Scott that he will be with us until he decides to retire and Sam is an out-and-out No.1. It is no reflection on what Lewi has done for us as he has done more than enough to warrant a place, but unfortunately someone had to come out of the equation to make the numbers work”

  15. For the first time I see speedway advertisements on the back of buses! Nigel really has tried. It does make you wonder what more can they do.

  17. He has financially but seems to not be working. It's mad to think that a club in Birmingham cant attract atleast a thousand supporters every week

  19. Was told he had a practice at Ashfield, admittedly on borrowed equipment but didn't impress. Fell off a few times. As said he'd be on a 5 point assessed average unless they change the rules. He will be too old for Polish u24 league next year so is looking for a team in UK.

  20. I've put him in purely due to the Stewart Dickson connection if rumours are true about Riss riding for Berwick. My logic is this -> If Dickson wants him at Berwick then he must be in the frame for a job at Leicester too considering his average just about fits for a reserve berth if Kerr is in.

  22. I was going to say a resounding 'NO' - But if the Premiership (or whats left of it) allowed Poole to race Wednesdays, who knows? Although if he did I reckon he would want to be much more 'hands on' than being in France allows!

  23. I highly doubt Riss will be at leicester. I could even score more at leicester than Riss.

  24. Main trouble is the sport isn’t attracting newcomers.

  25. Let's be honest I don't think tolley can have done much more to keep the brummies alive. He's been given stick on his rider choices but without him Birmingham would have been gone years ago. One of the main issue's is the lack of supporters. Its alright moaning about the landlord and what not but the support at Birmingham is absolutely terrible. You can have a great track, landlord and team but if the support is crap then what's the point?

  26. I'd keep both... Lasse and 2 and Borke at 6. Both would do decent jobs as second strings and take up barely any points in the process... Edinburgh's team for next season seems a difficult one, as heatleader options seem limited. Unless Craig Cook comes back, but that would be a massive risk. If they can bring in say Riss and Sedgmen at the 3 and 5 and get someone like Steve Worrall or Richie Worrall (if he's allowed to ride) as number 1 then the top 5 don't look too bad. 1. Steve Worrall 7.84 2. Lasse Fredriksen 4.57 3. Justin Sedgmen 7.69 4. 4.89? Alfie Bowtell, Danyon Hume, James Pearson, Jacob Hook 5. Erik Riss 7.35 6. Bastian Borke 4.00 7. 2.00-2.89 depending on which number 4 you pick (Connor Coles?) It's a bit harsh leaving out Paco, but where does he fit?

  27. Indeed, but is that the promoters or the riders?

  28. I really hope Nigel can come to some sort of agreement with his landlord for 2024, but I get the feeling whatever happens Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium has a very limited life span left, so Nigel is left between a rock and a hard place. He seems to have very few options which appear to be remain at Perry Barr short term and probably (based on the last 4 years) lose more money, move on and go all out to find an alternative site I really don't envy him whatever he decides to do, Good luck.

  29. Yes, it was a joke in relation to Jaizer saying Glasgow don't take risks with assessed riders, they let others do that and sign them further down the line when they are more established.

  30. It is. But a pretty half-assed one at that. End of season meetings used to be a spectacle and offer something a bit different. This is a challenge match featuring opposing riders you’ve already been over exposed to during the season.

  32. The rolling averages do lie though as Wright's official average is under 8 whilst in reality it was nearer 10 from his scoring this season. However I wouldn't have Hume back at Redcar. Makes too many mistakes and loses points.

  33. I think Max Perry has gone under the radar in the NL, while Boughen has (rightly) been lauded as am future superstar, Perry who has a higher NL average (from a more difficult position) is not talked about anywhere near as much.

  35. Don't get hung up on the "licence" to run speedway. You must be able to buy one cheaply on ebay or any other online website . Not worth a cent if housing developers own the land and are intent on building houses to help satisfy government house building targets. Anyone who ever thought Swindon speedway would EVER survive with peoples lovely new houses backing onto the speedway ... well naive is one word. There's much more money in housing than speedway or even greyhounds. How long do we really think Monmore will remain a greyhound track ?? Convenient excuse to get speedway out and clear the pitch to attract a housing developer .....£m

  37. The Russells have done nothing but take from British Speedway, just look at all the tracks they have been associated with, nearly all of them are now defunct. I said this years ago and was criticised for it. I liken them to the Kray brothers.

  39. Agree. What is the point of this body of people. No clout, ineffective and within the cesspit of controllers overseeing the sport a bunch of bullies who do not like it when you do not play by their restrictive rules and can stoop so low as they did with Kent. It really is time that those clubs who believe in the sport break away from the fat controllers and run a business that entertains the punter and does the right thing for speedway. At the moment it is endemic amongst those who jokingly run the sport insist that it is our way or no way. Look where that has got the sport over the last few years. Well done BSPA/BSPL.

  41. Saw Jim riding at Wimbledon in the Riders Championship during my first proper season . One of those quirky things, that Jack Millen, having qualified( checking up quickly it seems Jack never rode in a final, which must make him one of the best in that division never to have), must have been injured, so Jim replaced him. But having a low-ish average only came in as reserve. From memory, which is poor, it might have been one of the finals badly affected by rain and Cyril putting down bags and bags of sawdust to get the meting on. But Jim got a few rides The next year having qualified, he must have had the same fate as jack(?) as Brian Havelock was riding Sad to see these riders who i remember watching going of to the track in the sky

  43. Certain councils in Britain are not interested in saving what they see as British 'legacy culture' which is why every sport except football is being allowed to die (rugby League, speedway etc). The cultural landscape is being reshapeed purposefully to better suit the newer cultures who have no real interest in the old ones. I know what i am saying may be controversial but go take a glance around your local speedway stadium next time you're there and look at the demographics of the spectators and you will see what i am alluding to, especially if you also understand the demographics of Poland and then factor in their country's relationship to speedway and how well it is doing there. In many cities there are no new generations who are being brought up like we were or even being raised in the same cultural environment. I've been saying this for the past few years and everybody looks at me like i've fallen from Mars but speedway won't exist in Britain within the next 30 years when the indigenous cultures are all but gone no matter how much it bids to appeal to the newer ones. Enjoy British speedway whilst it lasts as it certainly won't be around forever.

  44. Great Post, I'm from Ettingshall originally and the sound of the bikes on a Friday night got me intruiged, my Dad agreed to take me as "they've got a bloke called Ole Olsen who is pretty good apparently..." I was hooked, great times, good friends made

  45. Just to add to this with some geeky calculations too, based on a minimum wage worker. In 2018, you’d have to work 2.04 hours (£7.83ph) to get into speedway. If it’s £20 in 2024, you’d have to work 1.92 hours (£10.42ph) to get in. I know there’s a lot of other life costs increased also, not least interest rates. But it gives a slight perspective on entrance fee increases.
