Ulrich has been great for speedway over the years and has done a sterling job for Glasgow in the last two. Wishing him all the best for the future. I think he’s doing the right thing at the right time….although I know he’s gonna really miss it.5 points

Normally just have the one farewell meeting in Britain. Could do what Bjarne did and have Peterborough Vs Glasgow at one of the tracks?3 points

On Thursday on Eurosport we were staring at someone pondering a pie when the starting tapes went up - and that's a regular occurrence! There was also the time the cameraman stood over the tapes... I do think the combo of Kelvin Tatum and Chris Louis works quite well, but Kelvin's not a natural at filler and it's just really odd they have a good presenter on site, who isn't a speedway novice, and they just don't seem to want to use her for much. When BT showed speedway, and you had Nigel and Kelvin doing the commentary, with good filler from Abi/Charlie/Natalie/Kiri and usually Scott Nicholls, and that was much more natural. BSN definitely manage that better, even if the acoustics arent always fantastic. The weirdest thing about the Eurosport coverage is they provide a subscriber stream with no ads, but half the time they just leave it panning the track, so they may as well just show the ads instead! The production just looks really barebones and under resourced - and maybe it is.3 points

Okay, time for the latest update. Here are all the former World Finalists born in the 1940's and 50's, including an addition (in bold) to my previous list. What scared me was the fact that I've gone through the 1980's now - and it's incredible to see how many riders who rode in World Finals in the 80's are no longer with us. Toni Kasper, Roman Matousek, Vaclav Verner, Kenny Carter, Alan Grahame, Billy Sanders, Kelly Moran, Simon Wigg, Zenon Plech, Edward Jancarz, and two non-riding reserves, Emil Sova and Henryk Olszak. To me, the 1980's seems like yesterday... That's the same Clem Thomas who was with Lea Bridge, Walthamstow and Hackney. He was in the Hackney reserves team for the match at Luton on 8th June 1935. He also rode for Hackney reserves in matches at Seaforth, Cardiff and Plymouth that year, as well as representing West Ham reserves at Plymouth.1 point

Mildenhall got of jail a bit with gifted points in some races1 point

I suppose that's because no riders moved out if the RS criteria, they just dropped the RS rule (after 1 year of their 5 year plan)!1 point

Putting aside the who signed who lets look a the last times the teams rode each other at each others tracks Belle Vue 5th September Belle Vue 54 Sheffield 36 Belle Vue had their full 1 to 7. Sheffield Klindt replaced Musielak and scored 12 points from 6 rides. Sheffield 22nd September Sheffield 57 Belle Vue 33 Sheffield had their full 1 to 7 Belle Vue had Rider Replacement Fricke and the team scored 6 points from the Rider Replacement rides. Overall Aggregate Scores; Sheffield 93 Belle Vue 87. Although Sheffield won those meetings on aggregate, I cannot see Musielak matching Klindt scores, and Lambert will score more than double the Rider Replacement score at Sheffield. For me Belle Vue are rank favourites.1 point

This list was just an extension of previous lists. We have the 18 oldest, then I posted an update on January 6 which extended it to 1941. The last two on that list were John Louis and Jim Airey. All I did here was add some more names...1 point

Why is Ashton Boughen riding for Oxford not Mildenhall after all the fanfare?1 point

Thanks for that quick response guys. Wally was W G Thomas, born 1902 Christchurch NZ. I suspect '34 is too early as he rode at the first speedway meeting in ChCh in 1929 then when Monica Park opened he was a regular for several seasons. One of the things he's remembered for here is leading the strike by the Kiwi team picked for the first test against the visiting UK team. Lets just say there was a massive pay discrepancy between the two teams. The NZ promoters flew a team in from Wellington which featured Charlie Blacklock. If it helps, Wally Kilminster was a close friend.1 point

– In the event of a tie on aggregate in the semi-final or Grand Final, the outcome will be determined by the Super Heat Format.1 point

So he/they didn’t stage any but they competed in two matches , one more than the other two teams. Just another speedway idea that wasn’t thought through are tackled with any enthusiasm.1 point

When the RS rules were introduced, it was stated when a rider was no longer a "rising star" he would get a 25% reduction on his ave (to help them get a team place after improving enough to no longer qualify).1 point
-
Lambert's 7.81 ave (7.61 with reduction) is based on his last 20 matches. If he rides against Lynn his final ave will then be based on his last 9 matches from 2019 & the Lynn fixture. Could change a lot!1 point

I think "Wilky" might be the one with the tractor driver . If it isn't, it definitely could have happened somewhere..... My first hero as a 3 year old kid... My 2nd a couple of years later, (and still the best exponent of racing a bike from the back, and therefore most exciting rider that I have ever watched).... PC... And lucky enough to get to watch him for over a decade every week at one of the greatest tracks that ever existed.. Would love to see a PC in his pomp today around the NSS... Book will be ordered... Edit: As a side note. There are plenty of reasons as to why crowds dropped off hugely from the mid 80's, however PC becoming "just ok" and therefore not blitzing the rest of the world regularly on TV during the summer on WOS, in a style that was truly "box office" was, for me, a large contributory factor... He was truly a "household name" in the mid 70's to early 80's... You could watch him just after 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and then watch him in the flesh just a few hours later.. Sadly, as "gate and go" took over on slicker tracks, so did lots of the excitement... As I say.. Box Office..1 point

If you haven't yet ordered your copy of PC's autobiography, you can do so for £20 (inc UK P&P) here at www.retro-speedway.com and save a fiver on the RRP. The 506-page book is currently being printed and you should receive it by October 31. Meantime... WHO, WHAT, WHERE? TRY THE PC QUOTES QUIZ From these edited excerpts, who or what is PC referring to in his book . . . ? “******’s old man *****, a bit of a stickler, gave me a rollicking for crashing and bending his son’s bike. I was 17 and green, hadn’t seen the place before but got no sympathy.” “I say ******* ‘did me’ but it was my naïve mistake to keep going up the inside. I probably blamed him for what happened at the time but, to be honest, if you clip someone’s back wheel, it’s always your fault. Another reminder to ‘keep it on the tyres’.” “He became one of England’s greats but he was always slow into the corners. It was his Achilles heel. I’m not having a go at him – you can’t argue with his superb record over a long and distinguished career. It’s just an observation.” “I must have ruffled *****’s feathers because he confronted me after our race – I have a picture from a newspaper cutting of him taking a swing at my dad, who was trying to break it up. When your opponent gets angry enough to want to fight, you’re always well advised to keep your helmet on!” “He didn’t say it in a menacing manner but with typical Yorkshire cockiness designed to get into my head. ****** probably felt that his mind games worked a treat, because he beat me both times we met.” “***** legged it across the centre green, grabbed the driver by the throat and pulled him down. ***** also ended up on the ground and had to be restrained as the tractor driver, other track staff and ambulance men joined the fracas.” ******** always had a lot to say and wouldn’t hesitate to throw a punch at anybody if he thought it was justified. But it was good to have him on our side because he always had our best interests at heart.” “It was both frightening and exhilarating at the same time.” “When I first started riding there were some much less dedicated riders who would turn up for meetings with a dirty bike they hadn’t bothered cleaning from the night before, and ******* was one of them. His idea of cleaning the bike was to kick it with his steel shoe, to make dirt fall off it.” “While waiting for traffic lights to turn green he’d rev the engine as hard as possible before releasing the clutch and doing wheel-spins along the road in central Manchester.”1 point

From the little information I have regarding Clem Thomas I believe he was born in around 1913. He rode for Lea Bridge/Walthamstow in 1934 and spent the 1935 season with Hackney. I understand that although he was known as Clem he was sometimes referred to as W.C. Thomas. I would be interested to know Wally's date and place of birth. There was a photograph in the Daily Mirror on 4th April 1934, showing Clem Thomas, N. (Jack) Bibby and J. (Fred) Tracey. They are described as 'three new Australian riders who will be riding for Lea Bridge this season'. The Daily Mirror, 16th February 1934, stated that Clem Thomas was attached to the Melbourne track in Australia and only recently came into the limelight. The London Daily News, 5th April 1934, said that Clem was 5 ft 2 ins tall and weighed just 8st.1 point

Doyle shed a chain battling Wright for 2nd if I recall correctly, the other Ace in that heat was well clear. Doyle didn't move from the gate because he didn't turn his fuel on. Wright. 7/5, 10/5 & 5/5 at Owlerton this year. 10 again would be good.1 point

I think that the I would be most concerned about is Tom Brennan, he has had a couple of nasty crashes lately and his form has been a bit unpredictable but he has had time to rest so hopefully he will ok.1 point

Peterborough and Glasgow should arrange Home and Away farewell challenge meetings for him .1 point

On paper we should win at home by much more than 10, but we have to factor in Belle Vue's poor play off final performances and it is something we have to get over. I'm very nervous but also believe we are as good as Sheffield and are capable of winning the title.1 point

No, we need a big hitter at number 1. If the Russian lads aren't allowed to ride in Poland next year, the BSPA should let them ride here. It would make our league a lot more competitive.1 point

Need to stop buggering about expectecting the supporters to travel from one end of the country to another in mid/late October and revert back to the original plan of having 1 meeting at a neutral track. Originally it was Sheffield but how about Oxford? Sorry for the Glasgow travelling supporters (but I guess it's still closer than going all the way down to Poole), and it would attract a number of Leicester and Poole supporters and overcome the issue of trying to get 3 teams to agree 3 sets of dates with the inevitable possible threat of at least 1 of the dates being rained off and having to be re-arranged.1 point

I've watched a couple of BSN matches, and I agree that they do a better job than Eurosport. Eurosport seem to base their presenters on how good they were as riders, but I think Adam Roynon is the best rider/presenter/commentator I've heard. He also works well with Dave Rowe as a kind of counter-balance to Dave's full-on delivery. We also don't get long, lingering shots of tractors going round or wide shots of quiet stadiums - of which we get too much of on Eurosport. I hate to say it, but Eurosport coverage often makes speedway look boring. They could learn a lot from BSN.1 point

It may be cancelled, as a mark of respect to our late Queen. Can hardly 'celebrate' her Jubilee post mortem, surely? Maybe the mistake was not keeping it as the Summer Cup!1 point
