  1. I would not have gone to Sheffield but Poole is a possibility and maybe Leicester. 3 best teams in league. Good pragmatic decision.

  2. I think its a good idea to change it, each track should make money with a large crowd, instead of getting a cut of a small gate, and more people will be able watch their team in cup final. Not all changes are bad

  4. Typical BSP thinking. "OK lads. Shall we get out there and promote the sport to the millions who don't know it exists?" "That sounds like a lot of work boss" "Well, what about if we take the best rule change we've made in recent history and just reverse it for a laugh?" "hear, hear"

  5. Sounds a better solution for Promotions try to make a bit of money out of the Final. Sensible IMO.

  6. I say this as someone who has lived in London and has great affection for the place. Wembley (the area) is a sh**hole and the stadium is soulless. It's a place trading on its name and very little else. Its not even the best venue in North London, never mind the UK.

  7. depends what weather forecast you look at . Met office gives a 50% chance of some rain at 10am which helps with watering then rest of day a 20% chance of rain !! Metcheck shows 0.1 mm of rain till 1pm!! so please don't put people off going !! BBC Weather is notoriously wrong anyway . This is a night for Coventry fans to see a Bees team back on track for one night and hopefully many will travel the short distance up the M6 to Perry Barr

  8. I get what you mean, it's a real shame that some of the associated costs around the weekend can be so high. I'm fortunate in that I only have myself to look after and believe me I'm as tight as they come and really stretch my pound out as far as I can, 60mph all the way down there and back and a diet of Aldi & Maccies all weekend. I did stay over this year for the SGP2 on the Sunday, but generally drive there and back in a day as I don't mind a late night. Turns out my night away this year was a waste of money really. Just taking the event by itself, I do think the organisers should be applauded for a £22.50 ticket, compared to events held at similar venues that's an absolute bargain... even if it was crap, I've seen worse at many tracks up and down the country tbh, it's just this years event wasn't in keeping with the stage on which it was set.

  9. Well, so much to say, and most of it bad. Most of it has already been said, so I won’t re-tread over old ground in great detail but at least reading most of the posts on here during SGP2 kept me entertained more than anything going on inside the stadium. Getting in was not as bad as I feared it may have been so that was a bonus The crowd was clearly very disappointing, I would say the lowest ever at Cardiff The reasons behind that are probably many and have already been discussed but I’ll throw in the absence of the World Champ + Emil and Bartek being the runaway leader making it less of a sporting event. It’s clear that different people go for different reasons, I think it’s fair to say the Speedway purist did not enjoy Saturday night, for me I enjoyed it as an event with the icing on the cake seeing Dan win the thing but that was about the only thing I enjoyed about it, maybe it was the heat and/or the lack of oxygen inside the arena but I did feel a bit “funny” while I was in the stadium. I’ve been to every GP at Cardiff, the track has always been a bit dodgy, but has steadily got better over the years, Saturday night took us back 20 years. Whether it’s the calibre of rider competing today I don’t know? I think Phil Morris has come in for a lot of unfair criticism, as far as I am aware he’s responsible for the running of the Speedway meeting, timings, track grading, watering etc. Discovery Events seem to have subbed this whole event out, the actual GP itself to Paul Bellamy’s company and he in turn the track to Ole Olsen’s track laying company, there are too many fingers in the pie. You’d hope there’s some pretty high-level meetings going on this morning. Sunday’s meeting was very much an after the Lord Mayors show affair, I wandered in, didn’t even have to show my ticket and although a great experiment to hold the SGP2 at the same venue as the SGP, I think it was a failed experiment and I doubt we’ll see it again. As for the debate on whether the event should stay at the Principality, absolutely YES! It’s a no brainer, look at where it’s come from, Hackney to Coventry to Cardiff, that’s not to say I wouldn’t want to also see one at the NSS. You look at the demographic in the Cardiff crowd and it’s very different to that you see at a league meeting. It’s more akin to a Polish Crowd (I know a lot of them are) but this is exactly the demographic Speedway in this country needs to attract. I thought the whole presentation of the event on Saturday was just lacking, no innovation which there has always been in previous years at Cardiff... even the Champions Parade before the meeting was a half arsed affair and the much trumpeted (get your cameras ready!) light show at the start, reminded me of Telford! Finally, what a great result for British Speedway with Super Dan winning the event, it washed away much of the disappointment with the rest of the event. The lad should be a Superstar and you can easily see him going on to dominate the series in the years to come. I fear Tai’s days as a contender are over, I hope not, but he’s not really shown anything for a few years now, he seems to spend a lot of his time appearing to try and be cool and it’s all a bit of an act, where as Dan is the real deal and is genuinely cool. It’s just a shame that if you do a Google search for Dan Bewley his victory barely gets a mention and even Ronnie O’Sullivan’s attendance pops up in the results… and he very much seems contractually obliged to be there! All in all, it was generally rubbish but finished brilliantly... see you next year, in fact I've just bought my ticket, £22.50

  10. Oh Dear! I've been going to Speedway since 1965, been through highs and lows with my team (Coventry), I love the whole Cardiff experience, Friday through to Sunday, but according to you I can't be a true Speedway fan!

  11. It seems that for people who were watching speedway for the first time, this was actually a great meeting. I've just seen a post on Facebook by people saying ti was their first meeting and they loved it and intend to go next year. Also, my son's mate came along, and in the car on the way home he phoned his dad and was saying how brilliant it was, how there were loads of people there and how he wants to go again next year. Imagine what these people would have thought if there has been great racing and a bigger crowd. I hope that the crowds will be back to at least previous levels next year. There are many factors this year that could have affected attendance. I also hope the organisers come out and explain the problems with the track, and how they are going to rectify them. A bad track can happen. Wasn't it Warsaw where it happened a few years back? I hope the poor track this year doesn't cause the attendance to drop again. This is more of a spectacle with more people watching. The atmosphere in the stadium was still brilliant, but there were far too many empty seats where there used to be crowds. The riders not trying to race were a let down too. If Dan and Jack Holder - who only got into the series as substitutes - could ride it, there's no reason why the other riders couldn't.

  12. I'm told there was concern that a number of the riders could be over the 21 age limit by the time the meeting finished.

  14. For me the return of the bonus point is a good idea. But for they should do away with the nice try point, the one that awards a point if the away team loses by 6 points or less. Whoever heard of a sport where you are rewarded for losing. For me it has to be; 3 points for a win 2 points for a away draw 1 point for home draw. 0 points for a loss

  15. Personally I think the scoring system is one of the few things our governing body has got right in recent years, I really like it although they spoiled it slightly by giving home teams three points for any win. I can see the appeal of the BP system but think the 3-2-1-0-1-2-3-4 is (was) better.

  16. My ticket for the weekend was £22.50... my ticket for next years event is £22.50 I'm just wondering how much you think it should be for VFM?
    3 points
  17. I suppose the point is, you pay what you think the weekend is worth... With the benefit of hindsight I should have knocked the Sunday meeting on the head and just gone home after the SGP, total cost would have been about £70, pretty much the same as a trip to the NSS on a bank holiday Monday for me... and for an SGP round with 16 of the worlds best riders that is astonishing VFM, and lets not forget the daytime bank holiday meetings at the NSS generally ain't that special. For those not happy with the price of the weekend I think the answer to the question of cost cannot be laid at the feet of the SGP organisers.

  18. About bloody time. The current system was ok imo when had the double point rides that kept teams in contention. But since that changed been loads of meetings become processional once result is beyond doubt

  19. It's a while since I've been. Niels Kristian Iversen won it last time I went, whenever that was. I actually splashed out this year, for the first time really. Home straight tickets and two rooms in a city centre hotel! Felt like I'd been on holiday when I came back! It's odd for me reading all the "never going again" comments, because, for me, it re-lit the speedway bug a bit. I'm already thinking about going again next year.

  21. To be fair to him, it wasn't a track worth ending his season for yesterday, as a few did. Sometimes you're better off getting home in one piece ready for the regular day job.

  22. For me, Cardiff is probably more about the social occasion than the racing - which is seldom great but has seen some great individual races or meeting results. I go there knowing I will meet up with people, arranged and otherwise as people circulate round the town centre before and after, and the meeting is guaranteed to be on. The atmosphere is also like no other speedway event in UK. The hotel prices are extortionate but so are Manchester’s if there is a big event on. The NSS is undoubtedly a better track - in truth probably every track in the UK is better - but there is not the infrastructure let alone the space to support a 10,000 plus speedway event.

  23. Well as, by your definition, I am a 'tourist' speedway fan, I've given up/dedicated almost 20 years of my life to bring speedway results to the 'true' speedway fans. As said before, fans come in all shapes and sizes and have different likes and the differing preferences does not make them anymore or any less, a speedway fan. Mind you, thanks for giving me a hearty laugh so early in the morning.

  24. Ah but, you're forgetting something. You'd need two wildcards then. Look at the trouble we had getting one there this year. Mind you. If they only have to do half a lap each, you could pick anyone.

  26. Having read all the last contributions... We must all have it wrong... It's all about the racing surely?? Young Dan Bewley won, a great kid, truly in that group of exciting GB riders that come along once in a generation, but it seems "its the racing what really counts"... "Dribble. Dribble. 100,000 more fans would watch next week in the UK if the racing was good at Cardiff. Blur. Blur. Dribble. Dribble. etc etc etc".... Dan Bewley won... Cardiff will never add many fans to UK Speedway, but it definitely wont take any away, regardless of the racing... And once more... Dan Bewley won.. Let's just celebrate that...

  29. Factually incorrect. Another sweeping falsehood about Poole. I'm sure my fellow Pirates cud name more examples than this one I have..... 2018 Premiership play off final Poole vs King's Lynn. Poole were home for the 1st leg & away for the 2nd leg. Made no difference coz we still won. Check yer facts before u speak & making yerself look like a sagging sausage roll.

  30. The present system is the best it has been for years. Aggregate point will mean technical tracks will reap the benefit. What do we want to see? last heat deciders or 60-30 romps? The 2 point away draw is also the right score as what is the point of getting a bonus point for losing within 6 then getting it taken off you because you drew! PLEASE, DO NOT GO DOWN THE ROUTE OF THE PREMIERSHIP! GOLDEN HEAT FOR DRAW!

  31. You have the skill to limit the cost that others might lack. I made a weekend of it so paid the crazy price demanded for a city centre hotel. Having said that, I’ve secured a twin room for two nights bed and breakfast for next year’s GP for £150 all in right in the centre of Cardiff

  33. Thank you so much! That is the one thing I find really obvious from old vids, and didn't know if anyone else had noticed? It almost looks amateurish to me, and is a far cry from the style we see today. And the worst one for that coasting? Mauger! That is one of the main reasons for me why modern speedway is more exciting; riders power INTO the bends...

  34. I've been to every Grand Prix at Cardiff since it was initially moved to Wales. In that timeI 've seen some memorable meetings, some mediocre ones, poor ones and Saturday must go down as the worst of the lot. For the first time in many a year, I just wanted to get up and leave I was that bored. The track was terrible, the racing awful, prices scandalous. All in all the whole weekend for my partner and myself came close to £600. I could have bought a season ticket for both my local football and speedway team for that amount of money I've already made my decision not to go next year as I can't justify the cost. Speedway needs to take a long, hard look at itself otherwise its going to end up in the history books. Far too many people involved in speedway are only in it to rip off the public. Well for me enough is enough. I've paid my fair share over the years to watch a sport I enjoy. Now that enjoyment has dried up and I will spend my money on more important things in life.

  36. I took a first timer along on Saturday and he thoroughly enjoyed it and is currently waiting to buy early bird tickets for next year. As a local, the ‘sights’ of Cardiff were no big deal so his enjoyment was all about how fantastic speedway is. Yes the track was crap but as a fan without a track now, I still really enjoyed it. Let’s be honest, at least 70% of speedway races feature no passing and a strung out field.

  43. The original intended date for staging this meeting in April, generated considerable interest from Coventry supporters, so I don't see why there shouldn't be a decent turnout for the restaging on Wednesday, but of course, anything Birmingham do or try to do, just produces scornful criticism from the select few! Just as a response to Lisa-Collette's comment, all of the named riders have a past connection with Coventry including the number 8 Freddie Hodder whose father also named Fred, rode for the Bees in 1964.
