  1. Despite my frustration at the long interval , which once again worked against us , I thoroughly enjoyed last night . Had you seen the sustained torrential rain that fell an hour or so before the start time , it was amazing that we had any speedway at all . Understable the opening three or four heats were uneventful as riders worked out the track conditions , after that though we were royally entertained . The unpredictable nature of what was happening made the meeting compelling . 6 points down with three heats to go and things weren't looking good for the home side , and I actually thought Poole were looking like getting a four pointer. But we fought back well and the culminating heat 15 was a bit of an epic .

  2. NEWCASTLE DIAMONDS v SCUNTHORPE SCORPIONS,,, SUN 22nd MAY 2022. Please note that this fixture was postponed about a fortnight ago. Not sure if it has been on TV, wireless or in the national press, but if you do travel to the venue the funfair might still be there, so it's not a totally wasted trip/day out/whatever!

  3. This forum is amazing at times. Scunny make the right decision in plenty of time to prevent people making a wasted journey, publicise it well... and yet people still find something to complain about. The meeting was called off just before lunchtime - at around 11.45am. By noon, the news of the call off was on social media, the club website and the BSPL website. Scunthorpe make early decisions to avoid having to make late decisions and waste everyone's time. And it works. I live over three hours away and yet I hardly ever end up at Scunthorpe for a rained off meeting. You can trust Scunny, because by lunchtime, they'll decide they are going ahead and they then try their absolute hardest to go ahead and complete the meeting - Scunny v Poole was an example of this.

  4. Do you honestly think the promotion don't realise? Do you think maybe, just maybe, they're working on something but as with other clubs there's not a great deal out there?

  5. To be fair i've saved my parents many a wasted trip by checking on here or even got them to turn round on route if their already set out for a meeting an hr or so up the road.

  6. Dreadful performance from a 3 man Redcar team , Roynon & Andersen were really poor , Ben Morley did well , Allen showed he was no loss when he went back to Scunthorpe. Great battling performance from Edinburgh, would not be surprised if they win on Sunday as Only Riss ,Wright & Kerr can get out of the gate

  8. I have a plastic penguin from the centre green at Costa Mesa, that was made up to look like a referee as it's painted with black and white vertical stripes!!! The US customs checked it out and were suprised that there was no packages stuffed inside. However my mates prize winning super large 'Las Vegas' Teddy Bear had the razor blade treatment.

  9. National weather forecast was showers, local weather forecast was showers, club made early call off , what more information do these prats want??? If you want to travel long distances with a dubious forecast, you take that risk, if you want to ignore the information put out in good time, then you reap what you sow end of!!!

  10. People will only check when they perceive a need to, if it’s a dry day you can’t blame people for assuming a meeting will be on. If every track postponed a meeting because it might rain in the evening, we might as well not bother.

  11. Oh yes... you get to see Superstar Sam Ermolenko in full flow in his "office" on his telestrator... it's definitely worth the subscription fee

  12. With speedway having mostly an ageing fanbase social media ain't really summit they actually use or even know how to use, that's most of the problem, my parents are both in their early 80's and wouldn't have a clue about which websites to use for information, best they would do is ring the track and hope someone actually picks up the phone.

  13. It's a tricky one isn't it... Rob (or any other promoter) can't control the weather of course, they can control if and when they postpone a meeting though. There should be some cut off time though as to when a decision is made, if they're going to continue to call meetings off based on weather forecasts, which seems to be the new normal. A lot of fans simply don't know where they stand and if or when to check. I think a lot of fans can take an actual rain off while they're at the track or on their way, it goes with the territory of following a weather prone sport in Britain. What they can't take is a promotion deciding to call a meeting off on what may or may not happen at any given time. If they said a meeting will not be called off after say 11am on the day of a meeting, based on a weather forecast, then everybody would know where they stood. If it actually did rain after that, enough to cancel a meeting, fair enough, that's life. But if a match starts, heaven and earth should be moved to ensure it finishes.

  17. Most of my memorabilia is programmes, mainly British Internationals dating back to 1928, love the pre-war one's. If anyone is interested you can see most of my collection (although this site has not been updated for several years) here. http://www.internationalspeedway.co.uk/unitedkingdom.htm Just click through them, I have all these programmes in my collection.

  18. Like i posted earlier if the fanbase was 80% under 40's then haps they'd be up to speed with Facebook, Twitter and various club/speedway websites, but it's the other way round and the fanbase is probably 80% over 60/70's and the majority of them don't use social media or even know what it is or how to actually use it.

  19. No one. RR at home is more than sufficient. Many apologies for my spelling. An extra “e” is not the hill I will die on.

  20. People do check, in fact i did check this forecast as i was going to watch it on BSN, i saw that showers were forecast and thought nothing more of it. As I've said there was no storm forecast or any prolonged rain. If the club want to call it off that early that's fine, I'll just mark them down as one of the many clubs not to bother to travel to anymore as they can't be relied on to get a meeting on
    2 points
  21. Why would you check though? There was no real substantial rain forecast, it seems these days if you do decide to travel you must stop every 15 minutes to check it's not been cancelled on a whim

  25. Seeing a discussion on another thread about an old 'Ammers t-shirt, what is your fave old speedway memorabilia? I have an old Wimbledon scarf. Nothing fancy or printed, just a hand-knitted red and yellow scarf. What makes it special is that it was given to me as a kid by Art Maidment, Cyril's brother. It is well over 50 years old...

  30. Wasn’t easy against the Czechs, but I think they had a slightly longer tail. Bewley maximum, and I think Kvech did too as they didn’t meet. Brennan was really quick, Kemp got 8 from 3 completed rides, and Palin got a race win final in Krakow in October

  36. My previous post, on page 2, mentions that I saw a forecast on Thursday(tea time news then Look North) of the potential of bad weather that could curtail the speedway. The older generation, who do not use social media or play with their phones 8 hours a day, might have a sit down early evening watching the tv while having a meal. I am pretty sure that if you wanted to phone the track, it is actually the number for the garage so you will get a direct answer from Gail, co-promoter of Scunthorpe Speedway.

  37. Lisa, we watched Lawson from a raw Moto crosser at Workington to our no.1 for 3/4 years and I can count on 1 hand the times he passed anyone after 2nd bend. Although last night maybe makes 6. It's not a criticism as such, he's a wonderful gater, and given injuries his brother suffered at Moto X not prepared to take unnecessary risks

  38. I think in this day and age not checking the local weather forecast and the respective clubs website before leaving for a speedway meeting when travelling a distance is somewhat reckless and a chance that just isn’t worth taking. Clubs who call meetings off on bad forecasts invariably do it to save everyone’s time and money including them on rent, expenses, riders officials etc and it works. Not often I agree with a Scunthorpes press officer but I do on this occasion.

  40. Well I paid for the stream but , quite frankly, wish I hadn’t. Not a reflection on the stream itself, which was excellent, but the dreadful performance from the Bears against a weakened Monarchs line up. A 3 man team (one of those was a guest reserve) can’t win a meeting. Allen was a very poor guest, disappointed Edwards (after his spell at Edinburgh last year) seemed so far off the pace and the least said about Roynon and Andersen the better. Not even competitive. Pickering aside, no one looked like passing anyone and most races were settled by the end of the first lap. Bears gating was generally appalling and they were way behind after turn 2. Bears deserved nothing from the meeting.

  41. They do. With Scunny if it's called going to be called off, it depends slightly where the away fans/riders are coming from. For instance, for Sheffield, Rob Godfrey knew he didn't need to make a decision by around 2.30pm-3pm, whereas if it is Glasgow, Edinburgh or Plymouth, it will be first thing. But if anyone checks before setting off, they will find the answer before they leave. With Newcastle yesterday, it was off a good 2/3 hours before anyone needs to leave Newcastle to get to Scunny.

  42. Someone made the decision, correct or not,,, if folk didn't look out for any updates or news on the big day out, what more could be done?

  47. Admittedly I think Czesztochowa would of still won fairly convincing anyway but Grudziadz are severely weakened by losing Pedersen - not to mention, they lost Tarasenko preseason too who was set for a big season I think. Was only Ostrow who were weak and then made the decision to release Klindt who is flying at the moment.

  48. Would anyone like a return to the days when, if two equal riders of both teams (say each team number 1) was missing, both teams promoted a number 8 to the team, and adjusted the riding order?
