A bit unfair....may be change the word 'worst' to 'least' ? (not sure of attendance figures?) The supporters that do go sound very passionate to me, making them amongst the 'best' supporters IMO.3 points

Sure you can debate the issue, Managers choose to manage in different ways, they set their teams up in different ways. Garry has often aimed for a 6 man team with a strong reserve at all times and almost a sacrificial reserve who has an opportunity to make a statement with no pressure on them. Most of his successful teams have been set up that way. Others do things differently, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Middlo for example has historically had little or no input into team selection at Poole. He managed what Matt gave him. What I will say though is Garry puts more thought into what happens in a meeting and making changes to effect an outcome, than pretty much anyone else I've worked with and that includes the other two managers you mentioned. Admittedly Garry is not big on "group hugs" and blowing sunshine up peoples backsides, some others are. But I would class him as one of, if not the, most successful Team Manager, in the last decade at 2nd division level. He's not everyone's cup of tea for sure, but everything he does has had a lot of thought gone into it. You can't please everyone and sometimes there are casualties along the way. But this is PROFESSIONAL sport. these people are getting paid. You can't just demand to enjoy your job every day and never have to do stuff you don't want to. If you have a set back, sometimes you learn more from that and others around you learn more from how you react. Do you bounce back or do you sulk? In the past I know the sacrificial reserves have had a good guarantee at meetings, so they know they will be paid at least a certain fee whatever points they score. If not, then maybe they need to learn about contracts and how to negotiate them. I get it, it's easy sometimes for kids and parents to get a bit starry eyed with a professional contract, but there's plenty of help and advice out there. But this is a business first and foremost, it has a job to do, and has someone in place to achieve that objective. If the goal is to keep everyone happy at all times, then maybe Garry isn't your man. But I'm guessing the same can be said of most successful managers. John Campbell at Edinburgh certainly isn't one for keeping it warm and fluffy and being friends with everyone, but in the last decade he's probably the main challenger to Garry as being the most successful TM in the 2nd tier.3 points

THE Campaign Group are pleased to confirm our planning application for the regeneration of Brandon Stadium is now live – and now we need your help. The consultation period set by Rugby Borough Council runs until May 6, and all messages of support sent to the Planning Officer will be of vital importance. Full details of how to make your voice heard follow later in this communication, but firstly a reminder of what this application is and why we have submitted it. We first went public with our intentions last summer, at which point we ran our own consultation process and revised our plans based on feedback from local residents, which was almost universally positive. Our application was submitted to the Council earlier this year, and after going through the appropriate processes it is now active and can be viewed via the following link: https://planning.agileapplications.co.uk/rugby/application-details/34048 The most relevant documents to view are the Planning Statement, the Regeneration of Coventry Stadium, and the Statement of Community Involvement, but brief details follow below. Our application seeks to change the use of various buildings at the stadium in order to provide additional community-based facilities in addition to the return of speedway and stock car racing. It should be noted that the return of motorsport does not form part of the application as no planning permission is required for this – it is already the established use of the site. The fundamental changes are that Hangar No.1 on the stadium frontage will be converted into a museum celebrating the history and heritage of speedway and stock car racing at Brandon; the under-stand bar will be converted into a gymnasium incorporating treatment rooms and a climbing wall (open to the local community); and the former dog kennels will be converted into a bar and catering outlet. Further arising from these changes, the dog track will be resurfaced to become a cycle track, with cycle speedway and other cycling-related activities taking place. A large proportion of the tarmac infield will be re-surfaced to allow for the staging of equine events. The Great Britain Speedway Team will relocate their training base from Loughborough University Elite Athlete Centre to Brandon and form a Centre of Excellence, including their Academy system for developing youth riders through established programmes. One question which may well be asked is, why submit a planning application on a site we do not own? The answer is to clearly demonstrate that a viable alternative exists to the policy favoured by the current owners, which has been to shamefully facilitate the destruction of the stadium and cause maximum grief for residents via non-existent security, and to then attempt to use the condition of the stadium as a reason to support a planning application aimed squarely at the building of houses which are not required by the Local Plan. Our application is endorsed by businessman Warren Hunter, whose offer to buy the stadium remains neither accepted nor rejected nearly two years on, and it also has the support of numerous international, national and local companies, as well as individual tradespeople, all willing to provide time, materials and skills to rebuild the stadium. So how can you help? The answer is to send an e-mail or letter in support of this application to: erica.buchanan@rugby.gov.uk or Erica Buchanan, Rugby Borough Council, Evreux Way, Rugby CV21 2RR. This response should quote reference number R22/0071 and be submitted before May 6. It is important to state here that what is not required is a comparison between our application and that of the developers. You are not being asked to make a choice between the two, and the application will be judged on its own merits regardless of the current Brandon Estates submission. Please concentrate on the positives of this application, which will provide upgraded facilities to assist health and well-being in the local community, as well as re-opening the stadium as the UK’s top oval motorsports facility. We believe our proposals represent the most sustainable use of the site, and are entirely consistent with both the recently adopted Local and Neighbourhood Plans, as well as fully complying with policies in the National Planning Policy Guidelines, and are consistent with the wishes of the vast majority of the local population. Please show your support for this application to the e-mail or postal address shown above. A reminder of the deadline, which is May 6.2 points

Opening fixtures normally attract big crowds. Matches against Northern teams normally attract visiting fans desperate to see their team in action. Yet for some reason this match has been chosen to be one of Glasgow's streamed meetings. This is likely to result in few if any diamonds fans making the journey north which would be a shame as they are a good lot, normally. Surely a meeting between the Tigers and Poole or Plymouth for example is the type of meeting that should be streamed. Anyway a comfortable home win for the Tigers is the prediction with very few viewers watching the stream.1 point

I had to turn round and park down a side street a bit away from the stadium due to the shows being in the car park. Think that would be the main problem as lots of others were doing the same thing so it made me 20+ minutes later than I normally would be. People in front of me said the speedway are not consulted with regards to the shows being there.1 point

Think you will find there was only one cash turnstile open against Birmingham so hopefully there will be two open on Saturday night so no queues and a prompt start.1 point

Submtted mine. Good luck. The proposal doesn't mention speedway by name, well, not that I could see, but I presume the stadium continuing as a sporting venue, gives speedway a fighting chance?1 point

It depends what you’re looking for, if you want to be in town there are a few good B&B places in Berwick plus Premier Inn. A few miles south or north on the coast quite a few B&B and hotels in good locations like Bamburgh , Seahouses Amble, Beadnell, Craster and Boulder and Warkworth to the South and St.Abbs and Eyemouth and Coldingham to the North. You’re likely to find they’re not as good value these days due to covid and staycation, and some have been charging ripoff prices in the summer months.. good luck and have a good weekend trip.1 point

No one can predict the entertainment value in a speedway match irrespective of the the score line.Have seen dozens of matches over time that on paper didn’t look attractive but on track were cracking.1 point

You would hope that the promoters would promote this event as some kind of competition worth winning... rather than just a fixture filler1 point

Swindon Town were once known as Railwaymen and Moonrakers, now Robins, same as nearby Bristol City and Cheltenham. Charlton were Robins now Valiants, since mid 60s. Also known as Addicks.1 point

It shouldn't need anyone guesting to make a meeting entertaining... If that was the case then why not have every meeting with 14 blank spaces in the programme and track specialists get selected to represent each team..? Mickey Mouse rules kill the sport, so using its biggest one just to provide entertainment can never be good... Other sports with no promotion and relegation have minimum standards to adhere to, as they know that collectively the "brand" suffers if they have significantly disparate levels between top and bottom. However these sports have money behind them so being bottom doesnt mean a risk to survival.. UK Speedway doesnt have that luxury so needs the team/teams at the bottom to at least have a fighting chance..1 point

it clearly will. the heat format massively favours teams with at least two no1 riders. It's why Glasgow don't win the title because they don't back up Cook with another big hitter. They go for riders on a perceived low average. Basso/Brennan might hit no1 level this season and the strategy might work. In the current format the top two have an extra ride each and heat 13 and 15 potentially gives you an 8 point advantage. Heat 2 and 8 just don't offset because even if you build strength in depth by definition those lower averaged riders are not guaranteed to always deliver 8 points from those heats. If you're Poole and you have 3 no1's capable of beating all of the opposition there are only 3 heats in which one or more of them don't appear. i.e. only 3 heats the opposition can realistically get a heat advantage. Even then if your top three has scored 41 between them and the others are guaranteed 3 points they only need another 2 points to win. Clearly speedway matches aren't won on paper but the winning strategy is obvious. It's why Poole follow the strategy and are successful. They know what they're doing. Well played and within the rules but if it's detrimental to the product because there aren't enough heatleaders to go around or some of the teams can't afford them then you end up with less teams to defeat.1 point

Yeah Dickson and dick won the 2012 title. Which actually did more damage than any of the weak seasons before due to what had to layout in wages every week. See Workington as another to fall that way. I know where you're coming from but bringing in limits like that imo won't change anything. Dear god, Martin mckinna was barely a reserve1 point

money. The more points you score the more you earn. Decent incentive I'd say. Then at the end of the season you get to reset the limit for next season based on the expected available riders and what average they're on and how many teams are in the league so it would be complete folly for riders to 2nd guess next years rules. It's not complicated. They stopped it in the Premiership because there were no top line riders left. And to be honest the fact the the promoters stopped doing it is probably arguing in favour adopting it given their track record for decision making. Look at any successful business and the focus is on the product. If you think Glasgow vs Newcastle this coming Friday is a great product and advert for speedway fair play to you. But based on falling attendances everywhere it would suggest not many agree. Soon there'll be a 6 team Championship which, like the Premiership will improve the product but it hardly screams major sport.1 point

I've sent in my email. If Oxford can come back so can Brandon. I've moved out of the area (nearer to Oxford now!) but would still travel to attend some meetings throughout the season. I suggest a link in other topic areas to get as many people noticing as possible.1 point

Jamie & his crew have done a superb job to bring the Cheetahs back to track. On Wednesday night the result is of no importance. British Speedway is the winner May the sun shine & the racing be fine.1 point

If Jamie promotes and runs Oxford the way he runs Berwick then Oxford are on a winner! Would be nice to see a Cheetahs win to send the masses home happy Hope all the Cheetahs fans just enjoy seeing their team back on track after so long1 point

Garry May has won league titles and cups by doing exactly that for years. Every recruited reserve rides on exactly that basis. They knew how they would get used during the meetings and were paid accordingly. They agreed to the set up and it worked well. Sometimes riders think they deserve more than they do and have a hissy fit if they don't get their way. well maybe they need to earn it, show the team manger what they're worth. First job as a reserve has always been to be better than your other reserve team mate. Every Garry May team I've been involved in knew the situation from the start. He's one of the most open team managers I've known for working with his riders and telling them exactly what is expected of them. I'd rather work with Garry like that, than half the TMs in the league who turn up to fill in a programme and get a bit of fuel money1 point
