  2. The "Chronicle" newspapers are a collection of free papers distributed by the Wolverhampton Express and Star Group. There are the "Dudley Chronicle" the "Halesowen Chronicle" and the "Stourbridge Chronicle" that I know of, and there may be a couple more distributed in other parts of the Black Country. Usually, they are almost identical in content, apart from having different front page stories, but I don't know of an edition that appears in any parts of Birmingham. (The border between Birmingham and Halesowen being somewhere mid-way along Mucklow Hill probably means that households on the Birmingham side will get the Halesowen version.) The Chronicles do feature the occasional Speedway story - usually Wolverhampton focussed, but on rare occasions, the Brummies do get a mention. The Birmingham Mail also get in on the free paper act by issuing a Dudley News, Stourbridge News and a Halesowen News for free. Living in Brierley Hill, I get both the Stourbridge Chronicle and the Stourbridge News - but I can't recall ever seeing a Speedway feature in the latter paper. In the late 1970's, the Express and Star did make a determined effort to push into Birmingham Mail territory by opening a branch office in Perry Barr and for a short time producing a "Birmingham Express and Star" but this failed to take off and the experiment was soon abandoned. Further back in the 1950's, there was a plethora of newspapers produced in Birmingham, including two evening papers in the Birmingham Mail and the Evening Despatch, two morning papers in the Birmingham Post and the Birmingham Gazette, plus the Birmingham Weekly Post, the Sporting Buff, Birmingham Planet, and two Saturday Sports papers the Sports Argus and the Sports Final (the latter, better known locally as the Blue Mail) and the Sunday Mercury. In about 1955, the Birmingham Mail and the Evening Despatch merged and became the Evening Mail. The Birmingham Gazette, the Blue Mail, the Birmingham Weekly Post, and the Sporting Buff were all scrapped. The Birmingham Planet which was an early full colour newspaper, died a natural death at around the same time, and the Sports Argus died when football stopped playing all of their matches on Saturday afternoons. These days, the Evening Mail has reverted to it's original title of the Birmingham Mail and has become all all-day newspaper which can be purchased from early morning onwards, and has been acquired by the Mirror Group along with the Birmingham Post and the Sunday Mercury which all now resemble the Daily Mirror both in content and style. This hasn't the slightest connection to Birmingham Speedway, but possibly some people will find it a bit more interesting than a few of the very juvenile postings which seem to be plaguing the site!!!!

  6. Why cancel the Wolves meeting, 4 of us were coming up. Changed plans to come. One of us self employed didn't book any work on the Thursday afternoon. Makes you realise why so few travel to away meetings

  7. Well it's on global live stream. No reason why they can't go down the VAR route us there? Two shocking decisions could be easily overturned

  9. Thanks Arch, way too busy with life and career to read or post much. Speedway is a low priority for me these days. I’ve been working Mondays for the past 3 years so not even had chance to get to a meeting. Thanks for the thought. I know you always famously get the quote wrong so it’s good to see nothing has changed. I said he COULD have been given his success in other motorcycle disciplines. You appear even more clueless if you think David could still be Workd champion. It’s comforting to see little has changed.

  13. To be fair Steve the track at perry barr has been re-laid in the off season, so I think most if not all riders should ride it well.

  14. NKI can't do a season he has said, and is on a 28 day thing. I think it runs out sometime in the last week of April. Killer is riding in Poland now, so fit. So could be back for the Ippo meeting on the 25th i think.

  15. All very true- one thing that surprises me with Poland is that whilst they don`t make a big thing of averages, they do use them to decide who is in the top 3 and therefore if a rider is injured (has to be out for 15 days) RR can be used but no 1 above and any below rule which can make the team stronger using RR. Now with the banned riders RR- it covers a top 5 rider yet apparently still no 1 above and any below rule- we will have to wait and see how it all pans out starting tonight.

  16. Just catching up on tonight's meeting..one heat in fed up of the Harris lovefest already. They're needing to knock that on head, 2 weeks in a row now. Agree next week's meeting doesn't strike me as great choice

  20. Ridiculous decision. Obviously the ref thought Gilkes just threw the bike on the deck while leading

  21. I'm further away and saw Riss take him out. Woeful refereeing

  22. From my distance of 155 miles, it looked like Riss took out Gilkes’ wheel there.

  24. To be honest I don't think Discovery are covering themselves in glory so far. The lack of unambiguous information so far is not great. However, in the same news item it also says. François Ribeiro, Head of Discovery Sports Events, said: “Part of our role as FIM Speedway global promoter is to bring the sport to a wider audience. By offering every minute of the action to millions of viewers on discovery+ and Eurosport 2 in the UK, complemented by the best analysis from local experts, we know we can attract new viewers to speedway while delivering the most energetic, exciting and engaging season for passionate fans yet.' Now, that can also be read in two ways. 'Every minute of the action to millions of viewers on discovery+ and Eurosport in the UK' should mean every minute show on both (because otherwise they should have said 'or' rather than 'and' ). It's ridiculous that with only a couple of weeks to go we are still speculating. I contacted the Customer Service team at Discovery and they assured me the GPs would be shown live on Eurosport , so we will have to wait and see. If I were someone who had taken out a discovery+ and sport subscription which is not required I'd be annoyed. If they now only show some GPs live on Eurosport I won't be best pleased. Discovery got lots of negative comments about its Australian Open tennis coverage, so the jury remains out for me.

  27. Dave Peet mentioned it in this weeks SS about getting some laps in as some of the lads were rusty. I think it is more to do with too many of our lads disliking technical tracks like Leicester, Edinburgh, Kent, Plymouth in which we should have organised a private practice at Leicester in March as their track is similar to ours in access at any time of the week.

  28. Considering they got the final rider sorted but chose to keep him quiet till the league starts shows how much bothered we are about the cup.

  29. From what ive seen around the amateur meetings hes done over the past couple of seasons no. Certainly quick enough and looks to be enjoying himself which is probably more than could be said when he was league racing. Would need a hefty sponsor to come on board i think to mount any serious full time return to a sport in such a precarious postion.

  30. Hard to disagree. Top 2 should be clear and then 3-6 will be a big battle of recruitment as well as on track

  31. If you can name me 4 riders not riding for Polish teams who Lublin, Wroclaw, Grudziadz and Torun can sign to replace the banned Laguta brothers, Sayfutdinov and Tarasienko then i would be interested to hear their names.

  33. from what I've been to so far: Josh Auty - about the same as a League Match vs Leicester Peter Craven - almost a sell out Leicester vs Scunny - a little disappointing, well down on last year Ben Fund - about the same as a league meeting Peterborough vs Ippo - disappointing for a local derby

  34. I work outside and I use the Met office app rather than the BBC one, it tends to be much more accurate. I think the Beeb stopped using the met office a few years ago and their accuracy suffered as a result. I think Lynn speedway use RAF Marham weather station.

  35. Never really understood the seemingly dislike for RR by some people... It keeps the meeting, and therefore the whole league and sport in that country, credible.. And means the actual team wins (not "six riders and a ringer" wins) thus maintaining true team spirit and the ethos of a proper team sport.. And also provides the six men with the potential to earn more money... You could argue that an injury means you are down to five men but two injuries mean you are down to five too, and given the nature of the sport injuries happen all the time and at any moment... Poland in particular have true strength in depth so RR can be no disadvantage, and the Polish authorities will also be very mindful of the unmitigated disaster that would befall them and the sport over there, if they allowed "guests" similar to how they are allowed over here..

  41. Topic header is wrong. It's The League Cup, and all the Premiership teams are in it. (Two groups on a round-robin basis, and the group winners to the final.

  42. One thing I can say about 'Monmore', the track may not be to everyone's taste, but the racing is decent, but above all that is a very enthusiastic 'atmosphere' ! Plenty of heckling/banter/good noise in general..... Speedway meetings at Wolverhampton are far more entertaining than at B'ham and not just because of the level of racing on show!

  43. I have always enjoyed my visits to Monmore it is fair to say, not all about the track, I like the people too.
