Paul is so enthusiastic and a tryer, he and his dad work feverishly in the pits if he struggles in a heat and to me fans like that, rather than that aussie trait of looking at their engine, giving up when trailing behind. Just my opinion I know but I'm pleased he's back, and for what it's worth would have kept Jake over Cam and don't start me on Batch3 points

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Doesn't matter which side of the scenes they are on.2 points

I'm going to be controversial here but a large reason for the dwindling fortunes of British speedway is the huge demographic and cultural changes which have taken place since the 1970s. The white working class of Britain which made up the vast majority of fans in the old days has to a large extent been decimated and the cultural rituals of fathers passing down their sporting and socialising interests to their sons is pretty much a thing of the past. Football in England was saved by television and the middle class whereas football crowds in Scotland (outwith the Old Firm) have halved in the past 30 years so speedway hasn't been the only casualty. These cultural changes have not spared places of leisure like pubs either and the only reason gyms have prospered (lockdowns notwithstanding) is because they made themselves more appealing to a burgeoning middle class who favour comfort over the wind and rain. Not many people from Gen Y onwards want to stand with a pie on the terracing in the pouring rain on a Friday night to attend a speedway meeting when they could be in a warm bar watching sport on the television. The only way for speedway to survive and prosper in the future is to secure television deals, or failing that (which is likely) to delve more into online revenue through streaming etc., because with the current stadia (Belle Vue aside) crowds are not going to increase any time soon.2 points

I’ll throw my penny’s worth in here if I may, as to be fair I had the same feelings on Allen as Steve has. In fact, I was pretty vocal after a meeting during the season in which I was less than happy with what I saw from him in regards to effort. I don’t know any “facts” either, but I definitely got the impression at times that he was just giving up in a number of races.1 point

Unfortunately Derrick Close has now passed away so Mike Broadbank now is #16 while Barry is first reserve anybody have any idea who should become second reserve. Arthur Payne is still with us just turned 97, ditto Dick Bradley.1 point

Kerry Gray guested for Wolves in 84 and had a massive 5-1 in heat 11 (I think) to help us beat Cradley that’s good enough for me1 point

Anyway, I’m still cheesed off that we’re so far under the limit! Sorry for sounding like a broken record but that’s really rattled my cage1 point

That seems contradictory to me! You’ve described Allen perfectly in that first sentence. Am I right in thinking that you work behind the scenes at Ipswich and mix with the riders? Apologies if I have you mixed up with someone else. So your opinions are not exactly neutral are they? You clearly like some riders over others because of their personalities, and nothing whatsoever to do with their riding abilities. Allen infuriated me this season/last year and it was no surprise he wasn’t retained. I don’t mind seeing riders struggling for form, most go through it at some stage. But what I won’t tolerate is paying good money to watch riders taking the pi$$, and Allen did that this season. If you don’t want to ride, then don’t! Quit, go elsewhere. At times he blatantly wasn’t putting in the effort. Clearly hasn’t gone unnoticed elsewhere either because despite now being on a “cheap” average, nobody else has picked him up either. Belle Vue might, as they’re getting a bit desperate.1 point

I was at that meeting at Monmore too & it is an incident that left me so shocked, I left the stadium soon after as was obvious how severe his crash was. When I got home my wife could tell immediately something was wrong but I couldn't bring myself to tell her about it for 24 hours or so .I still think about it to this day. As I worked in Wolverhampton in those days I sneaked away so that i could see Gary's cortege on the way into Bushbury Crematorium . Those huge floodlight poles around the centre of each bend at Monmore in those days were horrific1 point

Considering in 1965 the new British league had no Craven (killed) Moore Fundin Knutsson (retired) of the big 5 and only Briggs left. So it wasn’t the big stars that saved speedway in the U.K. but bread and butter riders and a variety of teams week to week. Could it happen again probably no as people are far more informed these days and the ‘mystery’ aspect of an unseen rider coming next week in sos and so teams doesn’t happen any longer.1 point

We have been through terrible times , almost going out of business on numerous occasions, had more homes than possibly any other team, but when the Facenna's took over, they were trying to save the fooball and speedway at Ashfield, don't know if you have ever been, but the stadium was an absolute dump, toilets a no go area, the Facenna's spent a lot of money upgrading it and the track, widening it and digging out the underlying holes and bumps. They paid riders on time without fail, and yes initially they overpaid to get riders to come , as the travelling was an issue, but since the guarantee with a previous rider who let us down on numerous occasions, we no longer give guarantees, riders are paid on performance. Glasgow were not the top payers in the league. We are just trying to raise the profile of speedway nationally. I hope no more teams are lost. Happy new year to all speedway fans and all clubs, hope we can get rid of this covid virus and get back to some sort of normality.1 point

Saturday June 18th fixtures will almost certainly be affected by the SEC Challenge final in Krsko Slovenia and the European U 23 team semi- final in Elgane Norway that day.1 point

Well we’ll all find out on Sunday at 7pm as there will be a live online show to announce the side.1 point

It's shaping up to be a good side. Suspect that Leicester have done their business very early for both the Lions and the Cubs. I would imagine that running open and private practice days means that both sides are very attractive to inexperienced riders where they can get greater track time than at other clubs where there is limited opportunity to practice. Also it looks like the Gaffer is keeping to his promise to the Fans from a couple of years ago of developing the clubs asset base.1 point

BWD should score well in the Championship until he gets hurt, unfortunately that’s his Achilles heel he gets injured regularly. But whilst he is fit and well I don’t see a problem.1 point

BWD was scoring well early in the H18TORY season for Workington as an injury replacement, got injured next couple of season, then due to you know, what found it very difficult to fly from New Zealand, now he should be over the injuries, suggest he will do ok, probably better away from home than at (b) rough park. Yes Newcastle not the most exciting team BUT you still have speedway, so best support it will you can1 point

We’ve had big names in the past didn’t really pull in fantastic crowds remember Robert Lambert and Steve Worrall in the same team??? Also having a big number 1 doesn’t guarantee squat1 point

maybe its time to close British speedway down for around 10 years or so . by that time speedway could make a comeback and all the money grabbers will not be around to drain the pockets of all who try to put on a good show for the paying public at a reasonable price something tells me i and many others will not be around to see it happen0 points
