  1. Mason rode for Glasgow in 2012 but I think there might have been visa problems which stopped him coming back in 2013. We wanted him back in 2014 but he’d been “got at” by Workington which was in Laura’s time. In fairness, Glasgow 2012 was not a good set up, and he wasn’t happy there. We tried really hard to keep him but his mind was made up. It was a good move for him and ok for Glasgow who at least got some money for him. Unfortunately, it was a conditional deal with a small amount up front and the balance when he hit a certain average, which he never did. Mason was a decent hard working rider who kept getting tripped up with red tape which meant he gave up on the sport earlier that he might have. But he seems pretty content back home with plenty of time for fishing despite being a dad twice over!

  9. I went to the press conference and don’t remember any rider saying that they wanted to return - because they weren’t asked directly. When the presenter said to the fans something like ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have them back?’ there was, naturally, a very positive ‘yes’ from the floor and the interviews were understandably steered away from putting the riders on the spot.

  10. I wasn’t there but I understand it was just the twins and Rowe practising. Josh Bates was apparently due to join them (in an attempt to impress team managers yet to complete there 1 to 7) but apparently fell off his bike in the pits and on the advice of medics decided to call it a day despite luckily landing on his head.

  13. Apparently they said that apparently he wants to ride for them as apparently Poole don’t want him apparently. Plus apparently I’ve heard he apparently can’t reside in England apparently so has to live outside England apparently. Apparently this post could be a load of rubbish.

  15. We never had these ‘foreign benefit seeking drug people’ 40 years ago but we did have ‘benefit seeking drug taking people’ 40 years ago in Walker. The place has a reputation for a reason, if you think otherwise then you are a fool. Don’t get me wrong there is good everywhere but don’t try and polish a turd.

  16. A certain regular commentator mentioned it a number of times on the Newcastle thread last year. I’m not involved with the promotion and personally want to see all the clubs in the league do well - hence my mention that it was ‘apparently’ the case.

  23. Jumping in late (been a l-o-n-g week): I was at my mate's house (a HUGE F1 fan ) the other weekend and he was tearing his hair out over of the final F1GP controversy, I just laughed telling him this kind of thing has occured in speedway many times. Thing is F1 is pretty the pinacle of worldwide motorsport, pretty much ace-ing everything else, a TV executive once said 3 biggest sporting events on TV are: the Olympics, Football World Cup & F1. In F1 one or two teams dominate for a season or so, others catch up then another team usually dominates, rinse & repeat, has always been the way. One good idea is for standardised cars and drivers draw lots, or whatever, each race but standardised cars was tried a few years ago with A1GP, it didn't catch on. Other formulae, like F3, F2, Formula 3000, Formula Atlantic, Formula Ford, Indy Cars / Champ Cars, etc the actual cars don't look that different to F1 & the racing is arguably better - but they aren't F1. That said I just cannot abide BSB or MotoGP, a few laps and I switch channels - and I'm into bikes in general, but a lot folk I know are massively into road racing - and probably the team brand names: Ducati Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, etc even more adn tell you who used what brand of tyres, etc. When I mention the riders queue up behind each other for lap after lap all on the same line awaiting a mistake or fall, they look at me like I have 2 heads. Obv road bike racing, like F1, is about the ideal racing line and 'chasing the dirt' doesn't happen, but I don't think a lot of modern race cicuits help the racing, many seem to be endless left, right, left, right and difficult for riders to get into a racing rythm. That said I love the Isle Of Man TT Races. That and speedway. Great riders of the past; Barry Briggs, the late Ivan Mauger, Peter Collins, Mike Lee, Bruce Penhall, the late Kenny Carter, etc were somewhat household names, at least some extent when the sport was regularly on ITV's World Of Sport, but these days sadly few non-fans have heard of Artem Laguta, let alone Tai Woffinden. Before this becomes a novel: even worse these days, many non-fans haven't heard of speedway.....

  25. As you well know no one has wanted Harris for several seasons !! And the topic was not about Poles specifically but about the Premiership standard being wonderful - which any sane person knows is not as good as Extraleague, E Winner and Sweden.

  27. Thank you for proving me right. That's the reply I wanted as it's confirmation that you've got no logical facts regarding the actual debate to add and the reason why you don't have a logical fact to add to the actual debate is because there isn't one. You've tried to argue with my facts that have actually occurred in life with biased opinions and I've put you in your place.

  28. Not trolling at all. R & R just licks Polski's ass by talking crap so I put him in his place with facts showing a number of his beloved Pole's who've tested themselves in Britain only to fail miserably and end up getting the sack. The only reason why Fricke is riding in the 2nd tier is because ZG offered him a ton of money that he couldn't turn down, He's still a GP rider competing at Elite level. (Bewley easily replaced) It is Polish rules because riders like Doyle & Bewley to name a coupe would ride in Poland, Sweden & UK if they could.

  29. Which riders are you suggesting? It’s very easy to say no to everyone, but much more difficult to offer alternatives.

  30. I suspect you are just trolling, but let's pretend you aren't. Did you actually watch this meeting? If you did then you would know why they lost. I'm also not sure why Poland v GB is relevant when discussing the strength of leagues in these Nations as they aren't exclusively populated by home nation riders. You mention a weakened GB without Woffinden...who races Polish league but not British. Lambert and Bewley are now the same. So the GB team helps show the strength of the Polish league!! Grudziadz may look awful in the Polish league, but the likes of Pedersen, Pawlicki, Kasprzak and Jakobsen could certainly not be described as throttle jockeys, as you suggest the Poles are, and all have proven their abilities on GB tracks in the past. So Fricke, who is racing Polish lower league, is better than a rider that was at the top of the British league averages. OK. That's another interesting argument to prove the strength of the British League. I'm also not convinced you can blame the Polish rules. Both could have raced in the UK but chose the Swedish league which you completely dismissed...interesting again.

  35. Charlie's bike has been on Ebay for a while now. Showed Bud Porteous, Charlie's mechanic, the advert but he was unsure if it was genuine or not. Charlie sold a bike to a Sheffield junior and it was found in a garden shed, it was on display at the Fanzone at Cardiff.

  38. What is also interesting is that, although much was made of a VAT liability, and the statement of affairs makes reference to a debt to HMRC of £158,048 it says that no claims were received for that amount which remained part of the statement of affairs at the final part of the winding up. Does that mean that much of the commentary made about the “mess” left by the previous promotion didn’t exist?

  43. It did certainly feel as if there could be a "new dawn" during those first couple of Sky seasons... I seem to remember a lot of TV meetings having some "entertainment plan" included to try and make an "event" out of the evening, with, on quite a few occasions I attended, a reduced entrance fee using the 'extra money' Sky gave them for showing the meeting from their track... Then it all stopped and fell back into the usual stuff we still have today.. I hadn't seen that doc so was interested to hear Chris Louis' earnings from around that time, (almost six figures). So you can only wonder what the likes of Tony R were on then? And Danny Kelly's views on Speedway and where it could go to if marketed correctly were particularly interesting given his background.. £9 to get in at KL too, which is on par today when you add in inflation.. Of course post that doc, Sky subsequently put well over a million in a season for circa 20 years which sadly was the golden opportunity to leave a great legacy for the sport.. Probably the biggest mistake made ever was how the Sky money was used, and sadly, that lost opportunity to truly develop the sport to any where near its potential may never come again.. (In the UK)...

  44. It did move on for a short while when the Sky money rolled in. But unfortunately the money rolled out of the sport via riders pay instead of some being retained and reinvested in it and thus ultimately it dropped back to what we have had for a number of years Depressingly, the same folk are leading the sport and by example they are unable to move away from continually doing what they have always done in the way they run the sport. Sadly with too many clubs & too few riders being available alongside insufficient vision by promoters who refuse to seek & accept external help if it means giving up some (not all) of their control the future doesn’t bode well for any significant improvement on the current scenario.

  46. A rudderless ship without a suitable Captain, John, for far, far, too many years.. Crying out for someone to properly lead it... You only have to look at the threads for teams struggling to get a decent team together next year to see how ridiculous the whole operating model is.. The "collective" are desperate to keep as many clubs going as possible, (any Speedway must be seen as better than no Speedway), yet they dont ensure as a "collective" that every team has a fair chance of being successful. Yet they will use a supposed "team equality" mechanic which we all know to be far too subjective when it comes to previous riding numbers in the teams rode for, home track advantage of previous tracks, amount of meetings done, assessed averages depending on where you are from etc to be of any tangible accurate use.. Some teams next season in Division Two will, once again, have three heat leaders of a high level, (on a par with some in Div One given they will be the same riders), and other teams will end up with second strings having to take heat leader positions. The result? Well, we know that dont we? The teams using second strings as heat leaders will struggle at home and be dreadful away. However all will come to the tapes "relatively equal" and no doubt every team will talk up their side. "Strength in depth, always have a good reserve, all can put two points on their averages", etc etc etc.. What the "collective" (still after all these years of doing the same thing year in, year out), fail to grasp, is that unless EVERY track can be competitive then you will never move the sport organically forward... Getting visited by teams who are "cannon fodder" simply cannot be good for the host clubs business, yet they happily allow such things to happen... With the ultimate irony being that a few will throw hundreds of thousands of pounds into their teams to try and win something with only marginally more kudos than winning a meat raffle at the local British Legion. With the lack of kudos, financial rewards and publicity, all down to their very own operating model.. In short mate. No. The sport hasnt moved on.. (Over here).. In fact you would have to say that it has regressed a long, long way..
