  1. i think completely ignoring 'keyboard warriors' is a major mistake. Truth is, there are an awful lot of people on this forum who love the sport and sincerely only wish the best for it. That, however, does not exclude them for being critical - indeed, on many occasions, it is good that they are. The BSPL and its members are hardly paragons of competence and honesty - they have, on many occasions, acted stupidly, selfishly, and with utter contempt (and even abuse) towards those who turn up every week to pay their entrance fees. It is right that they are brought to book for their actions, and one of the reasons that many of them despise the BSF is because certain members hit them very hard with the truth as they see it. 'Paranoid defensive ramblings' are a very good description of - on the rare occasion someone deigns to reply - what we get, usually tinged with hostility and aggression. Isle of Wight's Barry Bishop is one of the few who does regularly engage and what we see is a reasoned, measured response to our comments. The number of likes his posts receive reflect just how much his contribution is valued. You're absolutely correct that 'whatever you do someone won't like what you do and will criticise'. Some do so out of spite, malice and the settling of perceived scores. Others - including yourself - do so for what they think is right, even if they maybe mistaken (not that you are here). Its a question, then, of sorting the wheat from the chaff and that is something I have mentioned to the small numbers of people I know involved in running the sport and competing in it. The BSF can be a very significant source of customer feedback and knowledge if the comments are considered with a keen eye.

  3. This team will do for me, i’m just grateful that Scunthorpe have a speedway team, from the poor teams of the 1970’s till now 50 years on Scunthorpe with one of the best RACING tracks are still here with many other tracks having closed down along the way. Rob Godfrey gets a lot of slagging off on this forum but without him I doubt there would be any speedway in the town, long may it continue whoever rides.

  6. There's one sad person clearly with a vendetta, and the regular geriatric troll was on here the other day, but seems to have been deleted. Other than that it all seems pretty supportive. The vast majority of us would love to see Rye House re-opened a.s.a.p. and back into British Speedway 2023.

  9. Well there is a debate to be had on this one Geoff... Saturday as per DP and under lights is favourite like in the good old days... however there are some fans saying that Sunday tea time may be a better shout after the Reds play... We know Fridays are a non starter and no one seems really keen on a midweek night... So as things stand my best guess is Saturday nights are odds on favourite... Regards THJ

  13. Like I said good luck in your efforts to reopen Rye House speedway, your doing what the BSPL should have done a couple of years ago! I think anyone with any sense will fully endorse the above statement. But also like I said you need to lay of all the paranoid defensive ramblings cause this is what causes your issues with many. One thing I've learnt in my long years is that whatever you do someone won't like what you do and will criticise. Keyboard warriors should be ignored and you should let actions and fact do your talking - Again like I said if your successful in getting speedway back to Rye House you won't need to say anything to anyone cause the facts will be there for all to see!

  14. There are so many problems for today’s speedway clubs to deal with, some (most) problems have been self inflicted and allowed to happen through incompetence or head in the sand management, the blame is 100% with the promoters running speedway but some are as a result of the many other leisure opportunities to spend your money on. To be the owner/promoter of a speedway club at this time must be a financial nightmare and seriously nerve racking as many promotors will have there own money invested in a business that’s falling apart year on year with very little chance of turning things around. The BSPA can fiddle about with helmet colours and tinker making daft rule changes BUT there are no simple answers, no silver bullet. It’s not rocket science to see the sport in unsustainable with more money going out than what is coming in and speedway has sadly reached the point of no return.

  15. No.but see below... and there was a bit of history when Worky were blocked using a Friday as there second night in the last season they run and these Cumbrians have very long memories... no matter what league they are in... True... and another night is not inconceivable however Saturday was thought to be the best option because of the other sports that are popular in the town and they dont want to clash with anyone but it is still open to debate... Looks like you will be getting your wish Mike... Regards THJ

  18. I think often a lot of any "critism" towards clubs is generally aimed at being constructive because theres not a fan out there that wants to see another track closed. Stoke was a dump but i miss it, Buxton was basic and possibly ahead of its time. If clubs embrace the challenges they face and are open and honeat about them you will often find the paying public are far more supportive.

  20. Very hard to disagree with that The only thing is that for every person who - to quote cityrebel, because he's right - 'is always ...... waiting to have a dig' there is also someone who regards any form of criticism - no matter how constructive, reasonable, genuine or justifiable - as spiteful, vindictive malice motivated by a grudge or vindictiveness and to be met with denial, hostility, aggression and even abuse. In a significant number of cases on here, that simply isn't true.

  23. Am I missing something? I have read through the thread and there hasnt been any real negativity re the fight to get Rye House reopened.. A few people have expressed their doubts but surely that is natural given the precedents set so often when tracks close down. ie they usually dont come back.. And it is only an opinion of someone on a forum, nothing more and nothing less. It hardly makes any difference to whether Rye House come back or not I would suggest... Likewise, nor will the many positive messages of best wishes that seem to outnumber any 'doubters' comments considerably.. Forums are about opinons, otherwise it isnt worth having them... Taking any comments from others with a different view to you ultra personally definitely isnt worth it... Best wishes to Rye House, been twice and enjoyed both visits..

  27. At the old track there were many a season where we would often see 'average' riders beating the Aces lads by miles and think "we should sign him for next season".. Then we would sign these riders and would soon realise that they only had looked good because we were so garbage...

  29. Have only just seen this thread. As ever with all questions that include the subjective word 'best', I would start with a slightly evasive 'well, it depends'. Olsen spent six years at Wolves and was, in terms of heat wins, maximums and averages, clearly the best of the three. Readers who are not of my vintage might find it difficult to believe, but in Olsen's first three years he was an incredibly exciting rider to watch: he could not gate to save his life and very many wins were thrilling to watch. His defeat of Mauger in his first world title was such a race. As Ivan approached the fourth turn of lap 4 on his way to another win Olsen appears from seemingly nowhere to squeeze through a very small gap to take the win. There is grainy black and white film of it but it is not easy to find. By 73 he had become a much better gater and he had also tired of the experience of being a one man team for a promotion that had little or no ambition beyond listing O.Olsen at number one. 74 and 75 were unhappy times for him as he wanted to be a part of a successful team. Hans Nielsen was a rider clearly destined for great things from a very early stage. I remember being ridiculed at Coventry when I said he was a future world champion. Bees' fans reckoned Alf Busk a much better prospect. Ah well..... By the time the current promotion team were in place Sam Ermolenko joined and the club began to enjoy great success. He was integral to most of it. A remarkably gifted motorcyclist he was both thrilling and selfless. The team came first and his team riding remains simply the best I have seen. Pointing to the exact line he wanted his race partner to take lap by lap, the team accrued many more heat wins than would otherwise have been the case. Ermolenko is the best rider that Wolves' teams have had, even if Olsen is the best rider to ride for Wolves. Overall, I just feel privileged to have seen all three ride for my club. Happy days.

  30. Absolutely agree about Pickering hence why i said he would be a good addition. But with the last place or two left i think they need to find a gem like Sheffield did with Pickering last season.

  31. I couldn't resist reading the rest of this thread, it was just too tempting. Absolutely hilarious, better than even I could have imagined I would have said depressing but speedway fans (myself included) are older white men so these opinions are dying out and gradually society is improving and healing In response to the brilliant comment about Black people "NEVER" taking an interest in motorsport while one of the most successful british drivers and reigning world champion is a black chap, I could go on about it not being about black people being interested, it's about being given a fair chance......but I'll keep that to my snowflake, woke bubble

  35. Certainly looks that way. For me I would go with a team of Heatleaders Jack Holder Adam Ellis Tobiasz Musielak Holder and Ellis would form a formidable top 2, and Musielak I think would push up his average to around 8 points or just below. 2nd Strings Erik Riss Kyle Howarth Riss had a poor season and his average dipped, but I think a change of track will do him good and I think that he is more than capable of upping his average between 6.00 to 6.30. Impossible to think of Sheffield without Kyle, so I think that the club will go with him Reserve and Rising Star Jake Allen Reserve Connor Mountain or Danyon Hulme Jake Allen at reserve would give us that strong reserve that we lacked last season, also if or when his scores improve and if has to move up into the main body of the team, Kyle or Erik would move to reserve. Meaning we always have a strong reserve. The Rising Star I would take either of those two, I think that both can do a job, but I think that I would lean toward Connor, but would not be disappointed if Danyon got the spot. So my Sheffield line up would be. (1) Jack Holder (2) Erik Riss (3) Kyle Howarth (4) Tobiasz Musielak (5) Adam Ellis (6) Jake Allen (Rising Star) Connor Mountain or Danyon Hulme

Josh Pickering is the obvious candidate as he was excellent on both visits. Maybe squeezed out of Sheffield with them going for a top three of Holder, Ellis & Musielak?

  43. Can't imagine why anyone would buy a season ticket for speedway. Generally, they are poor value. Go on holiday and you 'free' week evaporates. Also, you lose the flexibility of not going if it is cold/wet/too hot/showing or if you don't feel well, or are isolating.

  45. To be honest, I think people trying to brush the use of said P word as no different to saying "Aussie" are just being deliberately obtuse. It's pretty clear to anyone with a modicum of sense that it's not just about a shortened version of the country where someone is from. It is also about context, and I think we all know that the context in which people are called such a thing is, in general, racist. That is why the term is seen as a racist term. Does that really need explaining? I'm not so sure it does to be honest. Saying it isn't is the same as saying it's not racist for people to throw bananas at black footballers because you wouldn't be offended if someone threw an apple at you.
