Malcolm's league and cup average on 13th July 1965 was 5.67; his average for the subsequent league and cup matches that season was 8.20. An improvement in form had started in the KO Cup match against Newport on 29th June, prior to which his average was 4.70. From the Newport meeting to the day before the Wimbledon cup match he averaged 7.76. That also included away meetings at Wolverhampton, Newcastle and Sheffield, plus home meetings against Edinburgh, Oxford, Poole and Wimbledon, the latter in the drawn cup tie. A lot of credit was rightly given to Simmons for the terrific team results in the latter half of the season, which led to the achievement of the treble (including the London Cup). However, at the time the introduction of Tony Clarke to the reserve slot in August was also acknowledged as being a contributary factor, with his average in league and cup being 4.35.3 points

As a neutral ( but a season ticket holder too ) it’s a shame to see the Bears having such bad luck. On paper the team looked fantastic but they hadnt really clicked all at once and now injuries are ripping the team apart. Due to having such a good race track ( and benefitting from our hasty decision to part with a great track curator ) with no real home advantage you had a team of ‘ racers ‘ but , as Eastbourne proved, you need to have some gaters as well. Losing Stewart weakened the team ( R/R not really getting the expected points ) but losing two good young prospects at reserve will be almost impossible to cover with a Friday night race night. Not sure on the rules for covering their absence but Blair would be a consideration ( is he a “rising star “ ? ). Thought Serjeant was unlucky on Friday, in point scoring positions in his races just lacked top end speed and I think he’s worth his place as teams are too quick to dump riders and I dont see Redcar being like that . I hope the Bears do pick up and make the play offs. I bought my season ticket based on the quality of the racing at the STMP over the passed few years once Terry the Track was brought in and I haven’t regretted a penny of it. Wish I could say the same about my own team but hopefully things will pick up there too.3 points

What ever happens something must be done just to make KENT a proper team ,We can not continue to turn up with only half a team,,We are not expecting a lot this season just a side that is capable off putting up a fight............3 points

Think the rising star gradings will start to cause discontent soon.Greg Blair might be worth a punt for Redcar!3 points

Well done to Monarchs outclassed by a side wanting to win.Quote of the night from that clown Barrie.” Most dominant display by an away team he has witnessed, because Berwick are not a bad Team” Really!!!!! As*e licking of the highest order award. PS That won’t be last home defeat this season IMO,but as long as the crowds hold up and they buy plenty of cheap booze we should be OK.3 points

Not sure what Janowski's problem was after heat 12, and acting like a petulant school child after the final and shunning the celebrations. What with that, and his antics in Heat 15 at Wroclaw the other week he seems to have had a class transplant lately. Has Darcy started managing him? Anyhow, great win from the world's finest. Onwards and upwards.2 points

Make no mistake about it from a Berwick point of view last night was as bad as the score suggests, it was un-professional, and totally un-acceptable for this team to represent the people who turned up last night and turn in a performance like that. Thing is does any of us believe we have a team manager or a promotion who will leave the riders in no doubt that there can be no repeat of that performance in future, now I have been onto our wonderful website but I am guessing it will be usual clap trap about forgetting tonight, turning over a new leaf, moving on etc, there may even be a snide comment about Edinburgh using Drew Kemp as guest as there was on here the other day and again on the parade last night. Face Berwick Edinburgh used the rules to their advantage just as Berwick did with the Garcia/Anderson saga, the original hokey cokey signing, he`s in then he`s out then he`s back in again. Most worrying of all is that most of us saw this coming and I don`t see last night being our last home defeat. I will exempt Leon Flint from criticism as he has carried the team for most of the season, and on last night Danny Gappmaier. Even Aaron Summers, who has has his critics on here which I understand, has the decency to win 50% of our race wins which wasn't difficult as Berwick only had two race winners all night. Take nothing away from Edinburgh, they were excellent, when a good team riding well comes to a poor team riding as Berwick did last night then this is what happens.2 points

Although there was a pool of riders to cover for injuries in 1965 some teams fared better than others with their allocations. Newcastle, for example, received World Finalist Brian Brett to cover for Ivan Mauger and were allowed to keep him even after Ivan returned (half fit) to the team. Oxford's replacements did not adequately cover for Ron How. Newport moved Bob Hughes up from reserve and brought in Ray Harris and then Vic White. Dick had a league average of just over 8 points, whereas Harris and White achieved around 4.5 and 5.5 respectively. I do not believe that Wasps would have finished any higher in the league even with a fit Dick Bradley in the team for the rest of the season. After his injury Newport rode 6 home league matches and won them all. Away meetings at Long Eaton and Cradley Heath were both won anyway without him. Away to Swindon they lost 30-48, with Briggs, Broadbank and Ashby all unbeaten by a visiting rider and Dick's presence would probably have not added too many points. Both Gooch and Pander scored maximums for Oxford as Newport lost there by 13 points and again I don't think Dick would have added enough points to have altered the outcome. It is possible that Bradley may have scored enough additional points to turn the 8 point defeat at Glasgow into a draw, but Wasps did use a tactical substitute for his replacement in one ride, so it would have been unlikely. The same applies to the 8 point defeat at Edinburgh. Even high scores from Bradley would not have reversed the outcome of defeats at Newcastle, Belle Vue and Wolverhampton, by 27-51, 23-55 and 14-64 respectively.2 points

Doesn’t seem like the track alterations have done anything to the actual racing. Still very one line. I know William spent hours in the workshop yesterday morning so glad to see his efforts turning into points. Kye again on a track he’s never seen was outstanding. Most pleased for Nathan, willing to learn hadn’t really scored what he’s deserved the last couple of meeting but did last night which was pleasing. Masters is a joy to watch absolutely effortless last night.2 points

I’m afraid the result is absolutely important. If for Berwick alot of fans dont return after last nights result, then the result was very important.2 points

Enough about the result, it’s not important, how long did it take to run this meeting?2 points

Don’t expect changes,it’s one big happy family. PS I thought the track was crap tonight, but I’m only a paying punter who has never ridden a speedway bike.No doubt that’s how the Team wanted it done.Pity they can’t gate.2 points

Other winners include Barry Briggs, Charlie Monk, Gote Nordin, (cover man) Nigel Boocock and Wimbledon’s home track favourite Trevor Hedge. Good news last night the Bullets won there challenge match all looking sharp1 point

I well remember being stunned at the time at the result of the cup replay, particularly given the circumstances, with Hunter and Harrfeldt both missing. Although this was partly offset by Trevor Hedge being absent for Wimbledon and John Edwards ruled out injured after his first ride, the home team were still expected to win with something to spare. Putting things into context regarding the improvement by Simmons, in his first 18 meetings he scored 8 or more (including bonus points) only 3 times. In the next 8 meetings he achieved this 4 times (from the Newport cup match to the home cup match with Wimbledon). From his sensational performance at Wimbledon onwards he was paid for 8 or more 11 times in 14 league and cup matches. That really illustrates his improved contribution to the team.1 point

I have no criticism of Leon as he has done all what he has been asked, but feel he has maybe taken on too much to soon with all his other commitments, might be started to suffer from burn out and lack of equipment to service all his meetings.Apart from Danni who is riding up to his capabilities IM0 don’t know what to make of the rest.1 point

Posted by Leon Flint on his Facebook page, sadly we cant have seven Leon Flints. Other riders are yet to comment. Literally couldn’t sleep last night after what happened yesterday. It simply just isn’t good enough and all I can do is apologies. Few weeks now to go back to the basics and sort it out and think what we need to do to come back stronger.1 point

Have to agree with Ringitsneck, on all points, especially with James Sergeant. He was really trying on Friday, (and the week before), but he looked like his motor was a little too fast and he was spinning up a little and struggling for traction. We should not give up on him too soon, its not the way Redcar works.1 point

Leon went out for a run after the meeting so couldn’t have been that battered and bruised , probably letting of some steam after the teams performance1 point

I'm afraid not, rider averages are one of speedways mysteries to me. I just keep my eye on the averages on the SGB website, but it's full of asterisks, greyed out figures and ifs and buts!1 point

I thought the meeting was efficiently run, riders were coming out for the next race almost as soon as the previous one finished. Only one re-start I think, and all over in 90 minutes or so, including a 10 minute interval. Slightly disappointed in Jorgensen and Aarnio - I think he's ridden at Leicester as often as Josh Bates this season.1 point

Can’t disagree sadly. 1 pass I can recall (Greaves on Bickley) before I started to genuinely lose interest … otherwise from the gate! I paid for a season ticket this year you know1 point

I agree BL65, How was great-I was privileged to see Ron before his career ending accident. I reckon with How Oxford would have been champs. If the boot had been on the other foot it would have been like Harrfeldt was injured for West Ham. They would have had no chance. BTW a sore point with me is that Dick Bradley was injured and not replaced for the Wasps. Even without Dick, the Wasps finished the highest among the 1964 Prov. League tracks1 point
-
Said before meeting began we would get beat ,but didn't think we would get battered like that, worst performance for ages,as mentioned Leon and Kasper both took sore ones last night so are excused, the other five well they were just mince, fed up hearing about strength in depth, we've got #hit in depth something has to change (no idea how or what). If that was as Dick thought the biggest attendance hope it was mostly Edinburgh supporters ,can see the crowd falling after that, kudos to the away supporters staying back for the NDL challenge match.1 point

I believe he told the tribunal he could see straight through the SCB's case and said the whole incident had been a pane1 point

I agree, which is what made the commentary on Eurosport all the more essential. It was explained clearly at, first of all, Madsen had to win his last heat to still be in with a chance of winning the title. Then, if Michelsen won his final heat he was guaranteed the championship, but he came second. So, it needed Madsen to win the final and Michelsen to come last for there to be a run off. Michelsen needed just 1 point to win, so offered little resistance to Madsen's challenge without it. I would say that the meeting would not even have been half as interesting without having all this explained in the final few races.1 point

Neither did the director by the looks of things, as they seemed to show Leon Madsen looking not particularly overjoyed at winning the meeting for quite a while.1 point

Hes 50 +ffs, he was getting mullered in the nl 2-3 yrs ago. The worst signing of all time on a 5+ average. Not the only problem tho, heeps a major concern. Ive no idea how len will attract riders down there to fill the void, he wont pay over the odds.1 point
