  1. It is, indeed, possible that other clubs might not have joined the NDL with a points limit at 39. However, we'll never know that because the limit was imposed without any discussion, consultation or negotiation at all. From what Rob Godfrey has said in this weeks Speedway Star, even though the likes of Poole, Kings Lynn and Glasgow have no interest in the NDL they had more say in its regulations for 2021 than either Mildenhall or Isle of Wight did. That, surely, cannot be right. Had there indeed been consultation - as there most certainly should have been - then the BSPL could state with some assurance that the limit had not been imposed but agreed upon. Just because it is accepted doesn't mean that it was wanted - Mildenhall's Phil Kirk made that point very clearly in Speedway Star last week. The other thing is that if the NDL is to be about development not competition it doesn't matter whether the points limit is 35 or 39. As to what Isle of Wight fans think of Barry Bishop's decision, I am struggling to find anyone who has not supported it - a quite remarkable situation given that he has closed their team down. That, to me, is very indicative of how people view Barry and his partner Martin Widman and all that they have achieved on the Island and precisely what they think of the way that the BSPL have dealt with this matter.

  12. Well, did anyone see that one happening.Another signing no one see coming. So if Bridger comes in on a 4 and our last rider is ???,that would make us over 2pts under the limit.Unless they have had a change of heart and decided to go for a better rider you can only see the wooden spoon coming our way.

  15. Fair play you did say you would speaking Chris Louis, and it would be interesting to see what he says on the matter. To be fair I think if I say shocked and surprised I would have thought most people would have guessed that I would not have had either Josh Bates or Tom Bacon on the scheme. Maybe they looked at how little riding that both riders have done for the last 3 seasons, both have had a couple of serious injuries,. Did Sheffield put threaten to pull out of the league, well this is British speedway so anything is possible, but to be honest I very much doubt it there will have been sponsorship money given, season tickets and riders already signed. For me I think that the scheme in the Premiership is flawed. If you include riders like Josh Bates and Tom Bacon then rather than 4 categories make 5 categories . I also don't understand how Teams all have to build to 35.5 for their top 6 regardless to whatever category your Rising Star comes from. For me I would have allowed the following; 5 Star (Josh Bates and Tom Bacon) top 6 limit of 35.5 4 Star; Top 6 limit of 36.5 3 Star; Top 6 limit of 37.5 2 and 1 Star Top 6 limit of 38.5 And I would also question why the job of setting up and controlling the scheme was not left to Neil Vatcher, he is after in charge of the British Youth Speedway and has no allegiance to any of the clubs in the Premiership, rather than a group of Promoters.

  16. What is a surprise to me is the press release completely ignoring the fact that the two Scottish teams have been awarded grants, whereas English teams have been told that they might possibly perhaps get something or they might get nothing and it might be a grant or it might be a loan.....yippee!

  18. Whilst i agree that all the riders can improve their averages, when your team starts so far under the points limit it takes some massive improvement just to get to that point.Build a team as close to the points limit with riders with improvement in them imo. The final rider should improve his lowly average, starting off as 3rd HL. Agree Ryan will give his all,but again imo their were better rising stars to be had. That's no disrespect to Ryan but i feel he has found his level.

  21. A new league for Poole here goes, having a quick look at the teams I'm going for 1 Leicester-Such a strong top 5 can't see past them. 2.Eastbourne-A very experienced top 5 in this league only newer rider is Brennan and he is going to be a class rider and solid reserves. 3.Poole-Probably the best top 3 in league but question marks over cook and keleher,Hume and Nielsen all for very different reasons if Nielsen can get back to his sunny form and both Aussies can hit 5.00 averages then will be a test for Leicester and the budgies. 4.Redcar-very good top end middle order and reserves just need a good signing to fill last spot and should comfortably make play offs imo. 5.Glasgow- solid side with plenty of scoring power at top end and a decent reserve don't think itl be enough in the end though. 6.Edinburgh-very good heatleaders but not quite enough in the lower end of team. 7.Berwick-solid team again experienced at this level but will lack heat winners. 8.Scunthorpe- again a solid team but lacking heat winners away especially 9.Kent-not a great team in any department tbh a season of struggle. 10.Birmingham- lack heat winners apart from bomber, only saving grace is they probably have one of the better reserves in Castagna which could save them in some meetings. 11.Plymouth- As much as they have arguably the best top 2 in the league the rest of the team will struggle especially away with tracks they've never seen before. 12.Newcastle - just can't see much hope for them, all hinges on roynon and Wright kicking on to 6.00averages to give them a chance of getting up the table.

  22. There aren't many top second strings left, and the ones I listed are decent enough riders in their own rights... Someone like Ryan Kinsley strengthens the reserves more, so it's just a case of signing the second string Redcar need and strengthen at reserve instead... There are no 6.60 riders about!! So the extra point may as well be used elsewhere in the team. None of the riders I listed had been signed up at the time of my post? They have now, yes

  28. I think the plan could be to get to 'Championship' level for the top league of say 12 teams, then maybe a 12 team league of slightly better than the current NL, made up of stand alone clubs and 'Colts' teams from some of those in the top league.. Let's be honest we are nearly there now with none of the riders who are competing being truly 'Elite', with only a very few able to even get considered to have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels in Poland or Sweden. If each team next year in the top league had two Rising Stars, with the 'best 24' in the top league, and 24 pretty much newcomers in the 2nd tier, I am sure it could put many clubs on a more financially even footing.. Fixed race nights would still allow plenty to double up so lots of meetings for those lads who have only a slim chance of getting fixed up in either Sweden or Polands top division.. The NL operating model has proven itself as a success when it comes to giving clubs who may have gone out of business by staying in the 2nd tier, (or already had) a chance to become profitable and has provided plenty of decent, value for money entertainment.. Maybe some within the BSPL have noticed that and seen an opportunity? A league that would sit between the current NL and the Championship standard wise might just be where the second tier can thrive and be a true 'stepping stone' to the top league.. Some do talk of a lowering of standards driving punters away, however when the worlds best rode here, double digit % drops in annual crowd levels were not unusual, so, I would suggest, those who still attend now are 'bomb proof' as far as following the sport goes, so a couple of years of 'reset" where every club can be secure of coming back to the tapes the next year, might not be a bad idea.. There is a world out there who would know hardly any of those who ride at GP level, never mind UK standard, so, using the Eurosport coverage, "names" and reputations could be built by those who appear in front of the cameras each week.. We who follow the sport may know they are not "top level" but the vast majority of those watching at home wont.. And they are the ones that need their interest pricking..

  31. Even if they were ‘told’. Why should the NL suddenly accept being told what the rules were when every other year they’ve had an AGM to discuss it and the higher leagues got that privilege this season too?

  32. godfrey spouting off in the star again saying the " iow" were told what to expect for this season , pity he didnt remember that in 2018 when comets told everyone that they were going to ride friday nights, he soon changed that to suit him shame he dont want to help the "iow" now.

  33. Glasgow speedway run the sport as it should be, they treat the riders and fans with respect and try to promote the sport professionally, ok the stadium is not as modern as Belle Vue but the facilities are good as well as the fan experience.

  34. Non of the teams built look strong enough but thats the rules. The cubs have 3 genuine heat leaders which is more than some teams. The Thompsons are likely to put 3+ points each on their averages. Halder is another likely strong improver and if Spencer returns its a top 5 all with season experience under their belt. The reserves are probably middle of the road from the newbies so as long as they can score ok at home and pick up pieces away i think this team will be in the hunt.

  35. Poor racing in front of a huge crowd will deliver far more atmosphere and wanting to attend again, than great racing in front of a poor one would.. I think the overall standard of racing nowadays is easily on a par, (if not better when you watch the SEC, SON and GP's) with any eras racing I have watched... Put simply, watching Peter Collins and Ivan Mauger race in the 70's in front of "one man and his dog" would have left the sport struggling back then just as much as it is today.. Those massive crowds elevated enormously what these two superstars, (and others), delivered..

  36. Football's modernisation was forced upon it by the Disasters at Valley Parade and Hillsborough. Even non league grounds are light years away from what they used to be. Speedway charges champagne prices, but serves up lemonade. Until the facilities reflect the profile of a so called professional sport, it hasn't got a chance.
