  1. To be fair to the guy (Rob Godfrey (RG)) he's not saying here are 16 riders you must use these guy's that's it; the way I read it is; here are 16 Brits who are without team places it would be nice if you could consider these guy's before bringing in some foreign rider. You would think he is telling teams to put 3 point riders in as heat leader's. Also have Glasgow not declared the same 7 already for next season as it was mooted that all clubs had agreed that they would try and start with the same teams as announced at the start of 2020 season so what's the problem. If Newcastle manage to get all 7 back they will be around 2 points under the team build level but that's their choice. If either of Nick Skorja or Ondrej Smetana cant make it next season I would like to see a British 7 point rider replace one of these 5 pointers and if there is someone available on the list fine; if not Ludvig Lindgren (foreign rider) fits the bill; its not mandatory to pick one of the 16... If neither make it then again a 9 point rider with a 3 pointer off the list of 16 would be fine by me... (we are about 2 points under the limit) Obviously there will be the odd rider who changes his plans; especially foreign riders I would suggest; (or the rider retires (prematurely) because they have a proper job now and are earning regular cash for a change) and the odd rider who is spending the next 3 to 4 years at Her Majesty's pleasure who wont be available (ever hopefully) and also I have heard that THJ (no the other one) may not be back at this level next year so teams will by default require new riders. However RG has a list of 16 brits who are available and should be given consideration first; but if that's not viable for the team re-building and if all that's available are riders with averages from 3 to 5 points then they wont be filling in for heat leaders (will they?); They should do this every season by the end of November and float riders names around the clubs nationally and if one brit rider gets picked up over a foreign import then great; furthermore it would make all the clubs aware as to who is available to fill in for injured riders as well... There has been many a daft scheme to push riders on to clubs to promote young British riders but this isn't one of them I think people are making a bit of a mountain out of a mole-hill on this... Regards THJ

  2. behave - there's a list of British riders clubs may wish to consider if some non UK riders can't come. Surely there's enough Brexiters on here to understand that

  4. I think it's something like... Aces 1 Peter Ravn 2 Bernie Collier 3 Chris Morton 4 Richard Knight (G) 5 David Blackburn (G) 6 Glenn Hornby 7 Kenny McKinna Coventry 1 Tommy Knudsen 2 David Bargh 3 Kelvin Tatum 4 Rick Miller 5 John Jorgensen 6 Andy Hackett 7 David Clarke I think Paul Thorp and Andy Smith may have been Aussie bound when this League Cup Final replay was rearranged, so were missing from the Aces line up. Can't tell you what happened yesterday, but I can reel off this useless info no problem

  5. Saw this pop up on Facebook yesterday. What a cracking piece of film, well worth half an hour of anyone's time. Really takes in the surroundings of a much loved iconic venue. I was there too, but couldn't quite spot myself! Others might see themselves here.

  8. Yes, I was at school at the time as well. Dave Jessup wasn't subject to Rider Control IIRC, his move was a straight commercial transaction between two Reg Fearman promoted tracks, and DJ moved to Reading as a replacement for Anders Michanek who wasn't returning in '76. Leicester were allocated Reidar Eide via the Control committee, as their averages didn't have much of a disparity at the time. To make up the numbers, Leicester got two relatively unknown foreigners on assessed 7.5 averages, Ernst Bogh and Greg Szczepanik. Bogh was sacked after about six weeks and Szczepanik only survived the season simply because there was no-one else. His final CMA was 2.37 including bonus points. So that worked out well. Four heat leader standard riders were allocated to tracks and refused to go. Ole Olsen being the most famous, he was adamant he wasn't going to Hull and the ever enterprising Ian Thomas formulated a lucrative deal with Charles Ochiltree of Coventry for the Dane to complete his move there. The other three were Christer Lofqvist (Wimbledon) and Tommy Johansson along with Hasse Holmqvist (Wolverhampton). Holmqvist hadn't even indicated he wanted to come back to the UK in 1976, so Wolves ended up using a combination of guests and/or R/R for both riders for the whole season. 1977 was something of a transitional year which reverted to averages only to determine team strengths, although there was a sort of dying echo carried over from the previous season. Three teams were allowed to use R/R all season for non returnees, these being Hackney for Zenon Plech, Hull for Egon Muller and most controversially of all Dag Lovaas at White City when you consider how the season panned out. Wolverhampton were granted the facility of either a guest or R/R for Tommy Johansson depending on the averages at any given time. All that was before both Cradley Heath and Leicester were allowed to use a guest for the same rider, John Boulger, for the opening months of the campaign. And people think the rules today are mad...

  9. Lets leave out the negative and remember the talent. In the 50 years I have followed sport for me Micheal could have been our greatest ever English rider.

  10. Tony Millard was a lovely guy and it was such a shame when the style of the Sky Speedway production was changed to have commentary and presentation done together so Tony was no longer required. I do still think the ride in studio presentation was the best although the amount of times the floor managers nearly got ridden over trying to get riders into the studios was quite a health risk. Getting back on topic I have a feeling that Eurosport may have a slightly different style to their coverage than BT. I am hoping that they do a better job of it than when they had the GP coverage as it was low budget as basic as they could get. Hopefully the money people in Paris will give Speedway a realistic budget to produce a high quality broadcast . As much as people moaned about BT coverage you have say that technically their production was the best yet with all meetings being in UHD and with a fresh style

  11. It has been said that the promoters have been having Zoom time meetings during the covid19 situation so I would surmise that all would have had some input in these discussions. http://www.speedwaygb.co.uk/news.php?extend.38468 Have some of you actually read the statement? It says that there could be team changes! We know Leicester COULD be making a change because of the situation with Perks sponsors. It also says it is his OPINION so not a rule or regulation.

  12. HE was much more than just the Eastbourne announcer. Did a lot of radio work including the BBC and was for a number of years involved with Brighton and Hove Albion. Had his critics and was prone to the occasional gaff but had more pros than cons in my view.

  14. Huewan was very good at studio presenting but can't remember him commentating (not saying he didnt) Could bring back Jonathan Green for the pit interviews too...... I think the combination of his poor commentary, lazy knowledge base, and his sheer desire to bleed money from our sport at every turn, Getting Nigel Pearson out the commentary seat would be akin to speedway getting its own bank holiday.

  16. ReRun Productions put together a double DVD which is still available to buy called 'Danny Ayres - The Showman' with all proceeds going to Danny's Family. It is really a great tribute to Danny, and includes some footage from the Island along with some other companies footage as well. I also believe this is now available to buy as a stream from ReRun Productions.

  17. Polish clubs have the luxury of access to their facilities seven days a week, most British clubs have three hours a week and that's it. All it takes is a hold up for an accident and bang, there goes your second half. Can you imagine the reaction of local councils and residents if you applied to use tracks seven days a week over here? You only have to look at the trouble Kent have to tell you the answer.

  18. Such a pity that your lasting memory of one of Britain's greatest riders was that fiasco at Ipswich. You seem to forget the role of Ebdon played, A referee with a personal vendetta, created all those problems. No, Lee didn't like the new starting rules but it should be noticed Mike had no trouble with any other referees . The incident at Ipswich was so extreme that Ebdon took his personal vendetta to penalise Lee at every opportunity. this day he stopped the race at the end of the second lap to exclude Lee, even though the offence had been committed before to the start of the race. Surely had Lee been in the wrong he should have excluded him immediately instead of waiting till Lee hit the front before putting on the red light. This wasn't the first time he had experience problems with Ebdon. They had clashed 3 times earlier in the year. Lee was wrong to withdrew his services, but this short fuse reacted without thinking. What should have been a brilliant meeting was spoilt for all the wrong reasons. I am not blind to see the all the wrongs Lee actually committed, but to remember him for that afternoon is very short sighted. There were far more good and bad times, than that day in question..

  19. I think Kelvin Tatum and David Norris would be the dream ticket! However seemingly unlike most I do think that Nigel Pearson and Kelvin Tatum are excellent, I also think Keith Heuwen was very good and David Rowe is good too, unfortunately Sam Ermolenko, as knowledgeable as he is, in my opinion is awful on commentary.

  20. Wasn't West Ham the same Steve. Both had Imposing wooden stands, great race tracks and wreaked of History. In my eyes, Custom House was the Hyde Road of the South.

  23. The people who run Birmingham Speedway (ie David and Peter Mason and Laurence Rogers) are decent, hard working people, and I see no reason at all why they should be expected to "comment" on a situation which does not involve them. They have already made it plain that there is no place at Birmingham for Garrity after what he has done - ()and nor I would hope would there be a place for him at any other speedway club.) Making a public comment on something about which they had no knowledge and had no part in, could only be detrimental to the club they run, so it makes good sense not to do this. Knowing them, their private opinions will be exactly the same as the rest of us, so let's leave it at this.

  24. No evidence at all just utter Bullrubbish . LR is no crook . Infact he works very hard for Birmingham speedway . Is he a good team manager ? in my opinion No . But that is purley professional criticism. My opinion on him non professional is that he is a decent guy and works very hard . Certainly no crook .

  29. Polish Speedway is very very different to British Speedway of the 70's. Everything from then to now is nothing of the same. For a start, Speedway was a hobby compared to today. So much money from sponsorship, TV, etc today where then it was heavily reliant on people through the turnstiles. Polish Speedway, like Premier League football have proven they can continue & adapted to less or no fans in the grounds. People talk about Speedway in Poland as some sort of new phenomenon but it's been massive their since the 70's too. What they've managed to do is progress & adapt to fit each decade. British Speedway's biggest & the only thing that's killed the sport here was the selling off of stadia to greyhounds, stockcars, rugby clubs etc. This single handedly set the decline. Whereas Poland have managed to keep & build new stadia for themselves. Yes we have Belle Vue but that has come at least 30 years to late. British Speedway stadia has gotten so bad they're places today's people just don't want to be.
