That’s the one thing in common with GB speedway ,the riders dictate.it’s not worth turning up if there is a cloud in the sky these days.Throttle control is a thing of the past.!!5 points

Was anyone on the PZM payroll involved at Grudziadz? Don't think so. And when someone from a higher authority stepped in, he immediately suspended the referee for the rest of the year. Now that is something that nobody in the BSPA / SCB would have the balls to do. Swift & decisive action. None of this meetings to have a chat, in a few weeks time over tea & biscuits in Rugby malarkey like the British authorities do, in order to sweep problems under the carpet.4 points

A remarkable man who led a life that couldn't have been foreseen. He was a true leader of men and undoubtably the best team captain that the Aces ever had. At the time of his accident he had gone up another gear and may have reached an even higher level, sadly we'll never know. RIP Alan and you were so lucky to have someone like Jean to look after you.3 points

I will say this everytime, the riders want these bikes/engines that don’t ride ruts or holes, they and they alone dictate the sport but when the track has some rough it’s the fans that suffer, it is time to take the control away from the riders, in the long run the sport will be better for it and cheaper for riders too3 points

Bit of saw dust, a boiler suit, couple of extra tear offs and a couple of teeth on the back sprocket and good to go, modern riders just not men anymore2 points

Just for something to say to give people who are not on the internet an update. I'm not sure what else I can say right now.2 points

Polish Speedway is certainly doing a cracking impression of British Speedway this year. What a complete and utter shambles. Yet again.2 points

Why? If you watched the following heat after the crash, Laguta was in same position as Thomsen and he had to shut off to prevent same accident. Committed, careless or reckless Laguta was not, but calculated he was by slowing down.2 points

I seem to remember in the early days of the Mail there being two separate sellers at Hackney, and both would be extolling you to buy either the Star or the Mail as you queued to get out at the end of the meeting. "Get your this week's Star" would be followed by "Get your Mail here". Then a wag in the crowd would shout out "Get (or was it Got?!) your Female Here!" Happy days.2 points

Repeating my own post, doubt anyone will mind: That's a blooming shame, he guested for Hull a few times as Ian Thomas said "I booked Wilkie because you know what you will get; total effort, no more and no less". I was at his 'benefit' at Belle Vue in 1979, 'The Wilkie 4's' and such was his standing in speedway I don't think one rider, certainly none of the stars, dropped out - it was a seriously wet meet too riders covered in wet sludge, but they still rode. RIP....2 points

Glad we are back talking about speedway-all I wanna do here is learn about Old Time Speedway (or as I am beginning to think VERY old Time Speedway). Re the post mentioning Ken McKinlay in the 1956 World Final- I have the Maurice Jones book"World Speedway Final -A History from 1929" Great book easy to read and ended with the World Final of 1978( it was published in 1979). So I am aware of Ken McKinlay's outstanding performance in the 1956 WF. In 1979 I had moved to Calgary in my so-called oil industry (boo) career. I used to have to travel to all sorts of places in Saskatchewan- remember being in Kindersley, Sask and reading this book at a local steakhouse ( I dined alone but you are never really alone if you have a book to read)- however I digress. My main point is does anybody in forumland recall this WF and did they think Ken McKinlay was bound to be a World Champion one day . BTW -a tip to those in a restaurant dining alone who are trying to catch the eye of a waiter-just pull out a book start reading it like you don't give a s**t how quick the service is and it looks like you are taking root there- they're over like a shot to take your order. Trust me it works(if you want super fast service pull out a copy of "War and Peace"!!). As an aside is Maurice Jones still with us or has he checked out to the big publishing house in the sky??2 points

I always thought that Alan Wilkinson, like Bob Kilby, was the epitome of what a speedway should be. A hard solid but fair rider,2 points

True or untrue it's still a joke Now Polish speedway is under the microscope it looks just as amateurish as British Speedway1 point

Thanks, Chunky, some really interesting stuff about Swindon and why they were so successful in 1957. I only started going in 1960, but I was always very impressed by the Swindon line up as it seemed they had five heat leaders in their team, George White, Ian Williams, Neil Street, Teo Teodorowicz and Mike Broadbank(s). They were the only team that had such a strong top five. However, and I could never really understand this, they managed to finish bottom of the league! This was partly due to the fact that their top scorer, George White, missed several matches through injury and also the fact that their no. 6 rider, Johnny Board, could only manage an average of 2.5, while the reserves, Brian Meredith and Ron Taylor, could only manage 2-4 and 1.7 respectively (remember they were eight man teams in 1960). Brian Brett rode in 11 matches and managed even less with 1.4. It was a sad decline from the heady days of just three years earlier.1 point

Unfortunately there are too many people in suits but worse is that some of those people are the wrong people but that aside I still blame the riders, they dictate to the sport the bikes they use, nobody else1 point

Tommy Miller appeared in the same Bulls team as Ken McKinlay at the Bothwell (Glasgow) training track at the end of 1949, where he was discovered by White City. He proceeded to top score for the Tigers in Division 2 in 1950 with 251 league points and a 9.78 average. Miller upped his average to 10.70 in 1951, then achieved 10.91 and 10.81 in the next two seasons. In the 1953 league season he only dropped 3 points at home. Miller outscored McKinlay in each of the 4 seasons they rode together for White City. When White City closed, Miller joined second division Motherwell for a fee of £1,500 in 1954. His league average dipped to 7.70 and it was said that he was not popular with the fans, so he moved on to Coventry, also in Division 2, part-way through the season, for a much-reduced fee, managing to average 9.90 for the Bees in the league. A significant dip in his scores followed in 1955 and 1956, with his average dropping to 7.47 and 6.69 respectively. Coventry fans blamed Miller for the poor performance of the team and he was released, before joining 2nd Division Oxford for the latter part of the season, where his average was just 4.29. With White City closing at the beginning of 1954, Edinburgh pulling out of the league early on and Motherwell struggling on to the end of the season before closing, Tommy Miller had no choice of tracks north of the border and maybe this was a contributory factor in his rapid departure from the sport.1 point

Me or we too, in addition to the nearby Scunny we had plans to take in Sheffield, Belle Vue, maybe Redcar & Peterborough and possibly Wolves. Though Peterbrough soon became a 'prob not' due to the disabled parking issues; no iffs or buts sadly it would likely have been too far for my mate's dad to walk from the parking area to the stand, or at least the stadium section. One solution for you, Iris123, though would be to take your partner to Wittstock speedway for a birthday treat you would both 'just happen to enjoy'. Go on, you know you want to and you may just 'get away with it' . (English humour in the realms of a disppointing situation for speedway)....1 point

Yes it's a greyhound track - what's more, it's currently one of the busiest closed-doors greyhound tracks with 6 meetings a week (mid-morning into lunchtimes every Mon-Tue-Wed-Thu plus both Friday & Sunday nights), each of those meetings on its own being worth more in betting industry tv-fees than a speedway meeting's rent plus catering profit. Let a crowd in for speedway and risk the news a couple of days later of a covid-positive spectator ? - if that scenario happened, that's a fortnight's quarantine for anything at the stadium and so, given their hectic dog schedule, bang go 12 greyhound fees !! Are you still wondering why any of the greyhound landlords that enjoy the bonus of speedway revenue have had to protect their bigger (and all-year-round) revenue first ? !!1 point

I saw Ken ride for my local team during his last year in Division One (before dropping down to star for Scunthorpe) and despite not being anything like the force he once was he still caught my imagination with his immaculate black leathers and bobble hat and still favouring the JAP engine, His World Final record was certainly impressive and I personally think that he is often overloooked when talking about the "Stars of Yesteryear". I have the same book and as you say it's a joy to read....simple yet straight forward. Shame that it's never been updated.1 point
