Eric Hockaday is recorded as being from London but never joined a London team. Arthur 'Donovan' Price from Wolverhampton only rode there in second half races before moving elsewhere, including near neighbours Cradley Heath. Coincidentally, in the latter half of the 1960s Mick Handley who was born 'on the doorstep' of Dudley Wood started out at Wolverhampton instead, although he did eventually ride for the Heathens in the early 70s.3 points

How many times have we seen people in the pits not wearing masks correctly? Also the fans not adhering to the correct places in the stands? Surprised it's not happened before now...2 points

Carl Johnson mentioned the fact the older fan base would want to sit in the stand and not view from the grass areas, perhaps he was really talking about the BB holders who would really need to sit in a seat after the long slog from the car park2 points

Tell you something Steve i didn't even mind the old black leathers and monkey mask. You could still usually tell a rider by his riding style, nowadays alot of the riders styles look similar.2 points

Would have to agree, I loved my Speedway in the 70's. Particularly enjoyed the Johnny Boulger years at Dudley Wood watching Stevie B develop. The all conquering team from 1983 meant that a lot of home matches were less than entertaining.2 points

So Miedzinski went from Rybnik to Torun and rode with the Holder's, who moved onto ZG and Bydgoszcz potentially spreading it there. Where do you draw the line on who should quarantine? Whole game should shut down for 7 days.1 point

Yes a great side made up of local discoveries...very different to today and perhaps that's where speedway started to go wrong?1 point

Mentioned this before but the ultimate side of the 70's was Ipswich 1975 and '76. Champions both years, the double in '76 and all with a home grown side. Six of the seven born within a 20 mile radius of Foxhall plus Billy Sanders who had only ridden for Ipswich once he turned 16. No guests used, instead used rider replacement or local juniors moving up into the team when required. One hell of an achievement and has never been given the credit it deserved.1 point

They had that problem a few times when assembling sides they were very weak at reserve. The likes of Reid,Gledhill, S.Collins, Leaver, Fry, Bostin (etc) found it very difficult.1 point

I was a fan of Chris city really enjoyed watching him ride and in those days riders had there own identity Chris, Ivan, Broady, Boy Blue , John Davis come to mind.1 point

Erik broke a leg early at Wolves and as you said Kristian/ Steve picked up nasty injuries amazing they won anything with that handicap. For me it was the Squad that was decent Perks averaged over 6 Les Rumsey was very useful and the young promising John Hack got his chance it really shows you how strong our league was then.1 point

They certainly were a strong side as evidenced by their winning of 2 Cups. I think by the end of the season they were the best team in the league, but injuries to Erik, Kristian and Stevie B earlier in the season cost them. Imo a stronger septet than the one that finally delivered the league title 2 years later.1 point

Apart from the Elite few within the inner sanctum, under the auspices of Buster and his appointees it is difficult to imagine what more could have been done to alienate those supporters that have been loyal for years under all weathers , management and position in league ( whatever league that may be)1 point

Pusey at his peak, was a very exciting rider Sid. I saw him a couple of times in full flight at Custom House when i was a kid. His polka dot leathers really made him stand out!1 point

That side cannot be that far behind the 83 side Steve ? what a squad of riders they had. Penhall, Erik, Phil, Alan, Kristian, Steve,Boogaloo, Dave Perks, John Hack, Les Rumsey..1 point

Watched chris in his final year at workington, overweight he was knackered after 4 laps with a red face and sweat pouring off him ron bagley thought if fit he could still have been a number 1 for the comets just lasted a few weeks!1 point

Long time since I've seen the video but surely no one would believe that Stancl was a serious threat to Penhall..just keeping out of his way perhaps which was common practice in important meetings. Recall Michanek not wishing to 'mess up' Malcolm Simmons during the 1976 Final.1 point

I wouldn't be surprised if Zmarzlik himself asked to be included. He desperately needs track time to help sort out his starting.1 point

Remember Bob Humphreys riding for Milton Keynes at Powderhall, coming out of the bends onto the straight his front wheel hovered about a foot off the ground virtually the full length of the straight,he was in perfect control, perfect set up I reckon.Superb skill.1 point

There would still be the restrictions in place no doubt which does mean they would be taking a risk. With an open meeting you could always pull the plug if it was not viable.1 point

An interesting article that I've only just come across, which was posted before the weekend: Swindon team manager Alun Rossiter is worried Troy Batchelor’s confidence could be hit by being left out in the cold by Polish side Rybnik. The PGE Ekstraliga newcomers have won just one of their opening meetings against basement club Gorzow and are one of the favourites for relegation. Despite the team misfiring, Batchelor has made just one appearance so far this season – taking just one ride at Grudziadz on June 23, finishing at the back, before being dropped for the rest of the meeting. Having seen Batchelor finish second in the SGB Premiership averages and form a title-winning partnership with Jason Doyle at Swindon last season, Rossiter is baffled that Rybnik won’t turn to the former FIM Speedway Grand Prix star. The club is set to operate rider replacement for the injured Andzejs Lebedevs at home to Leszno this evening rather than draft in Batchelor. The former GB boss understands Batchelor is defeating team mates in practice races, so he’s stunned he isn’t being selected to compete in the PGE Ekstraliga. He said: “He’s in Poland and having a hard time. He is beating people in practice races and saying ‘what do I need to do? Win it by a straight?’ I don’t know what’s going on there. “He has paid for 17 tyres to go out in practice and do the sparring heats. They put the tapes down and he wins the races. But he’s still not in the team. They gave him one ride, dropped him and didn’t pick him again. “For me as a Swindon manager, I’m worried I am going to get a rider back who isn’t riding and could be a bit scarred from it all. “I just don’t understand their mentality. There are a lot of good clubs, but obviously there are some very strange clubs that have a different mentality of how they go about things. “He has been absolutely fantastic. For the last two years he has been absolutely on the money for me. “This is not Troy talking. This is me talking as his manager at Swindon. I am absolutely baffled how they can treat him like this.”1 point

Big Covid problem in Polish Speedway- Google translation. Due to the fact that one of the people from the staff staying in the machine park during the match PGG ROW Rybnik - FOGO Unia Leszno played as part of the 5th round of PGE Ekstraliga on July 10, has a positive result of the COVID-19 test, PGE Ekstraliga introduces prepared for such circumstance crisis procedures. A positive test result was attended by one of the people staying in the machine park during the PGG ROW Rybnik - FOGO Unia Leszno match of July 10. It is not one of the competitors, mechanics or training staff members. PGE Ekstraliga was informed about this fact on July 14 in the afternoon. Accordingly, in accordance with the crisis procedure prepared in advance and ready for such cases: - postponed matches of the 6th round of PGE Ekstraliga PGG ROW Rybnik - ELTROX Włókniarz Częstochowa (17 July) and FOGO Unia Leszno - RM SOLAR Falubaz Zielona Góra (19 July) - introducing mandatory home insulation from July 14 for all PGG ROW Rybnik and FOGO Unia Leszno players together with player mechanics and training staffs as well as all functionaries staying in the machine park (participants of the match of the 5th round of PGE Ekstraliga PGG ROW Rybnik - FOGO Unia Leszno with 10th of July) - a ban on all sports activities for players participating in the PGG ROW Rybnik match - FOGO Unia Leszno from July 10 - genetic testing for coronavirus for all PGG ROW Rybnik and FOGO Unia Leszno players together with mechanics and training staffs as well as functionaries in the machine park (participants of the 5th round match of the PGE Ekstraliga PGG ROW Rybnik - FOGO Unia Leszno from July 10) In accordance with WHO recommendations, genetic testing for coronavirus is carried out within 7-8 days of the potential contact with an infected person. Therefore, hoping that the match of the 5th round of the PGE Ekstraliga PGG ROW Rybnik - FOGO Unia Leszno took place on July 10, all tests for the participants of this match (players, mechanics, training staffs and functionaries in the machine park) will take place, in consultation with INVICTA, at the earliest on July 20. The costs of the tests will be covered by Speedway Extrastraliga. After obtaining negative test results, the PGG ROW teams Rybnik and FOGO Unia Leszno will return to the normal rhythm of the 2020 season in PGE Ekstralidze. Dates of outstanding matches with their participation will be set in a separate announcement by PGE Ekstraliga0 points
