  8. Tony Loader's International Speedway Annual of 1991 has a meeting report (written by Dave Wright) with the results and point scorers for this meeting. NORTH ISLAND SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP December 29, 1990, at Gisborne Awapuni Speedway hosted the North Island Championship with 35 of the 38 nominations contesting a series of qualifying heats staged in dusty conditions the same afternoon. The North Island title again saw David Bargh take control, while Auckland's Chris Martin appeared impressive, as did Michael Long and recent returnee Nathan Murray. Hard-riding Gary Marsh gave an entertaining Performance, in heat 2 giving Geoff Tompkins and Richard Davidson a few anxious moments as he fought a Titanic battle between himself and his machine, while in heat 13 the bike won the fight, slipping from his grasp on the pit bend. Expatriot Brit Graham Wedlake too gave Tompkins a rough time. Wedlake having a rush of blood on the pit turn and bringing the Auckland rider down heavily. Tompkins was taken from the track in the ambulance. Luckily, little more than severe bruising resulted from the incident which also ended Wedlake's night. Bargh and Martin, level on maximum points after taking four rides each, met in heat 19, and a thriller looked on the cards as all four riders entered teh first bend together. However, Bargh emerged in front, and cleared out to a big lead over Martin, taking the chequered flag, and the title with an effortless 15 point maximum. With the dust eventually settling as the meeting progressed, the track was generally regarded by most riders to be near-perfect. Scorers: 1 - David BARGH (3 3 3 3 3) 15 2 - Chris MARTIN (3 3 3 3 2) 14 3 - Michael LONG (2 3 3 2 3) 13 4 - Nathan MURRAY (3 3 2 1 3) 12 5 - John ROBERTS (2 2 3 2 2) 11 6 - Gary MARSH (2 2 2 0 3) 9 7 - Steve ETCHERS (2 2 0 1 2) 7 8 - Darrin WILSON (3 1 R 2 1) 7 9 - Greg FISHER (1 2 1 0 2) 6 10 - Michael WILSON (1 0 1 3 0) 5 11 - Phil BARAKAT (0 1 0 3 1) 5 12 - Rob CHAPMAN (1 1 2 0 1) 5 13 - Richard DAVIDSON (0 1 2 1 R) 4 14 - Barry FREE (T 0 1 2 1) 4 15 - Geoff TOMPKINS (1 0 1 F N) 2 16 - Graham WEDLAKE (R 0 R X N) 0 Res. 17 - Paul CORRIN (0 - - - - ) 0 Res. 18 - Gavin ELBERS (R - - - - ) 0

  9. Going to be a bit controversial here but strangely I preferred the mid to late 70s at Dudley Wood, not knowing if we would win and the racing was arguably better. I got bored with thrashing everybody and actually lost a bit of interest in speedway for a quite a while before starting up again in the late 90s at Monmore

  11. After the way he beat Olsen and Knudsen that night, does anyone really think Penhall would have needed help to beat Stancl? I was more concerned that Carter would try to knock Bruce off his bike, and judging by the way he let Kenny go away from him for the win, Bruce was too.

  14. Yes a dirty trick, take the OAP Licence funding from BBC tell them to pay it and then blame BBC when they can't. Meanwhile Cummings awards family firms millions in untendered contracts and starts defence review without having iisual security checks or official role.

  15. I don't remember the exact story, but it was one of the follow ups. Chris Pusey in an exclusive interview, telling of how speedway was fixed. If, as you say, he had an alcohol problem, then maybe there's a connection with that and him doing the story. The Jiri Stancl one is actually quite an interesting one if you watch that final race and listen to Dave Lanning's commentary on how Penhall and Stancl seem to be "playing to the gallery".

  16. Yes a real shame that and you have to ask yourself were Chris, PC, Mort treated shabbily by Belle Vue in later years.

  20. In 1983 the season started promisingly for the then champions in going to Cradley in early 1983, and winning in the first leg of the Premiership curtain raiser thingy. We lost the second home leg but won the trophy on aggregate after a blanket finish heat, amongst others. It was not an omen of good things to come. For me personally Cradley's team were the best i ever saw purely because i do not remember the triple crown winning BV side of 70-72, as i was too young then. Cradley came to Hyde Road later in the 1983 season and hammered BV 29-49, they did not have a weak link anywhere in that super team. Every Heathen had an average of over seven, from a maximum of twelve, which is some going. My head as i have said says Cradley but my heart says BV.

  21. Solid as Belle Vue were, nothing can top the riders in the Cradley team. Broadbelt, Wilkinson, Eyre, Pusey - not in the same class as anyone in the Cradley team. Just look what every member of Cradley achieved in their careers. Gundersen - 3 times World Champion Wigg - British Champion /World Long Track Champion King - World Number 3 Grahame - British final runner-up, 5 points from 2 rides in a World Final Collins - Overseas Champion Ravn - starred for Denmark in World Team Cup final Pedersen - World Champion Not bad for a side supposedly weakened by the loss of the previous year's number one. And Phil Crump got a maximum against them!

  22. Not ideal I know, but I have checked the Speedway Yearbook for 1991, which contains details of all the WCQR held in Australia and New Zealand until the end of 1990 and there is nothing on this meeting. It does list the South Island Final earlier in the month, but not the North Island final...

  25. They are using R/R(ZZ) as well for Lebedevs- but even if they weren’t Lambert would still be at 8. Rybnik have also a problem that there must be 2 Polish riders in the top 5, so that’s another reason for his position.

  27. 1957 was a great year for the club Bob Roger was top dog and averaged 10.27 and with Williams, White, Middleditch the top end was strong.Something I just found out was that the club paid 50 pound that year for the great Mike Broadbank from Wembley what a bargain that was. That year Roger also challenged Peter Craven for the coverted Golden Helmet beating Peter at the Abbey but losing to him at Hyde Rd and in the decider at Norwich.

  29. In a way I can understand that one or two brothers didn't want to follow on behind Peter. But that is a bit funny with Dave Morton. Started at the same time as Peter and I think I remember that the Collins brothers and Mortons were childhood friends. You would have thought it the natural thing to join Belle Vue

  30. Guess it's so long ago that nobody on forumland actually got to see this team, although am sure many people have seen some of the riders. In fact even I got to see three of them- Mike Broadbank Neil Street and Glyn Chandler (although Glyn only scored 1 point that season and may have ridden only a couple of meetings) Never got to see Bob Roger (the top scorer), George White, Ian Williams, Ken Middleditch, Ernie Lessiter (one time SAL Riders Champion) and Al Sparrey (who I think may have been a bit of a character). In that team there were four future World Finalists-not too shabby. Anybody get to see all the riders mentioned even if only with other tracks or have any knowledge of Ernie Lessiter-is he still with us?. I think he just beat out Alby Golden for the SAL Champion that year-could be wrong though.

  31. Attended a motorcycle auto jumble at the South of England Showground at Ardingly this weekend. There were several hundred people in attendance.... mostly motorcyclists like me .... so few of the 4 wheeler crowd. well organised with Marshall’s all wearing masks directing you to well speed parking spaces..... many of the stall holders had free hand sanitiser and disposable gloves available. Stalls were all spaced well apart ....toilet facilities were spacious with a Marshall ensuring no crowds of people. Facilities were regularly cleaned and were well supplied with hand soap and hand wash basins. Most people were wearing face masks when near the sales pitches. So these events can take place.... but how many speedway venues have facilities or space similar to a county showground? Most of the grubby toilet facilities at speedway stadia are so cramped and poorly maintained they were un hygienic pre Covid..... you were lucky to have a light bulb in the loo at Lakeside speedway.

  35. The proof is in the figures. Wales, Scotland and Ulster have kept a firmer lid on masks and distancing, and are down to about two or three Covid-19 deaths in a week between them. England, where the vast majority of marches and beach ignorances have been taking place, is still recording around forty deaths a week. To get speedway back, the virus has to be reduced and later eliminated (not eradicated, that's a pipedream) and if everyone plays their part -- and the Westminster parliament concentrates on saving lives rather than saving rich people's profits. It does appear that outdoor activities create a lesser risk than crowds indoors -- bad news for cinemas, clubs and pubs -- and this may allow 25% stadium capacity to be invoked, and speedway to make a return.

  37. 2020 rules. The winner of the 2020 FIME Speedway European Championship will be directly qualified for the following years SGP Series. • Should a Rider who has qualified from the FIME Speedway European Championship also be in the top 6 of the Final Overall SGP Classification of that year, or the top 3 Riders from the FIM SGP World Championship Qualification Meetings (Art. 71a) then an extra additional rider will be nominated by the SGP Commission.

  38. Absolutely spot on! The government has made mistakes that generations after us will pay for. In times gone by most of us have seen recessions but not many living have seen a depression! What does it look like, maybe like a scene from mad max? More worryingly now the government has control of our lives they'll want to keep it that way!

  39. I agree. But the government should never have imposed such a draconian lockdown. I can still see Bojo standing behind the lectern telling us we had all been very naughty and saying we had to hibernate. No proper plan, no proper thought. Sod the old folks in the old peoples homes, sod the economy, just take pressure off the NHS, at the cost of everything else! Shambles! And now they realise their mistake, but are having difficulty convincing many people, to come out of their air raid shelter!

  42. It seems its a default answer though that when someone asks a reasonable enough question, the reply is normally ask or contact the club. Other clubs have either refunded season ticket money or giving their season ticket holders alternative offers, or at the very least put out a statement. It shouldnt be asking to much for Berwick Speedway to make some kind of statement for those of us who have bought tickets, much better IMO to let everyone know whats happening rather than answering individual emails surely, or maybe an email could be sent to all season ticket holders, after all the club should have our email addresses.
