  1. Last night I watched a recording of the 2019 British Championship from Belle Vue. What a good meeting but the last two rides of Danny Ayres were real crackers, especially his 5th ride when he the race all but won except for him riding into the deep stuff on bends 3/4, him fighting with his bike to stay on, which he did, only to lose out to Chris Harris. i know the night belonged to Charles Wright, but Danny Ayres will be remembered for a brilliant showing, he so much wanted a win that night.

  2. You sound like one of the many CleverDicks who know exactly how to promote Speedway but have never had to guts to do it.

  3. Going thru' my old Vintage Speedway mags, came across an interview with Barry under the tile of "Speedway's Happy Hippie". It was in Vol. 7 #4--winter 2000. A large part of the interview was to do with Barry's health-in 1999 a lump on his neck was diagnosed as a malignant tumour- a secondary tumour- he had a major operation and had a big dip in back of his neck which his long hair covered. He said his life had now taken on a new urgency and the interview ended with the interviewer saying" he intends to enjoy the rest od his life as much as he can and the sort of year he had in 1999 makes that a decision a sensible one". The irony is that the interviewer was Bob Radford and that 20 years afterwards Barry is still around but Bob is the one who has gone. Who would have thought it. Life is such a crapshoot.

  4. Is it possible to watch the Polish speedway on one of the satellite channels like last year. I.e, Eurosport/Premier sports etc.

  6. Yes replacing anyone in the top 5. Rybnik had to name 2 Poles in the top 5 so it`s possible that Lambert will ride in heat 3.

  7. The original question is quoted above, and asks, in terms, if a reserve can replace the other reserve in a heat. I quoted the section of Rule 3.6 which appears to confirm that they can. That would of course be dependent on the replacing reserve not having already taken 5 rides. The complete Rule 3.6 reads: 3.6 Track Reserve Riders In each SGP Meeting, 2 Track Reserve Riders will be nominated by the FMNR to take part. Proposals must be made in writing to the FIM not later than 1 month prior to the meeting. The SGP Commission will make the final approval and nominations. After nomination, the official FIM SGP Entry Form for Wild Card & Track Reserve Riders must be duly completed and signed by the Rider and his FMN. The FMN is responsible for completing and submitting the entry form to the FIM/CCP Administration at least 2 weeks before the meeting for which the Rider has been nominated. Furthermore, the Rider commits himself by his signature to be fully aware of all the FIM rules; to accept them all and to compete in the FIM SGP Meeting for which he has been nominated. The 2 Track Reserve Riders will replace, in rotation during Heats 1 to 20, any riders disqualified under Art. 8.3, (2 minutes time allowance) or Art. 8.4 (Unsatisfactory start). Additionally they shall replace, in rotation, any riders injured after the start of Heat 1 who are unable to take their places in a race. If a rider gets injured before the start of heat 1 then the first Track Reserve Rider will take all of the injured riders programmed rides. A Track Reserve Rider cannot ride in more heats than a scheduled Rider. Track Reserve Riders are not permitted to take part in Heats 21, 22 or 23 unless they have qualified to do so according to their total race points scored at the completion of Heat 20.

  8. Interesting, if off topic Edgar Elder, the original driver of this 1938 “Farmall Special” Midget, made a name for himself in the early days of circle track racing as a driver, designer and builder. Born in 1923 and hailing from Fresno, California, Elder grew up around racing and was introduced to motorsports early; his father, “Sprouts” Elder, was not only a legendary motorcycle racer but also half of the team that invented the Harley-Davidson “Knucklehead”-derived Drake midget race car engine, paving young Elder’s way into the sport. During Edgar’s formative years, the Fresno area was a hotbed of early circle track racing development, and he would go on to design and build several well-performing midgets while developing his own driving career—one that spanned the West Coast and brought him to some of the more well-known tracks of the Midwest. The days of Edgar’s race car helmsmanship came to an abrupt end, however, after a particularly serious crash at the famed Gilmore Stadium in Los Angeles before the track was torn down in 1952. Still, he would go on to make a name and career for himself in the sport as he crewed, designed and built winning midgets, even designing and building a few Indy cars by the early ‘60s. The Farmall Special—named for its warmed-over 123 CI Farmall 4-cylinder and originally driven by Edgar—was campaigned across Northern and Central California from 1938 through the mid-‘60s and possesses a provenance made more historically important because of Edgar’s well-rounded and documented contributions to the golden era of independent circle track racing, USAC and the Indy series.

  9. Yeah, I mean an AFFORDABLE one, Steve! Strange thing is, I have an extensive book collection, mostly non-fiction. I was looking for a copy of Sir Thomas Beecham's autobiography, "A Mingled Chime". The cheapest I could find on Amazon was $80; I found a number elsewhere (various sites) that were less than $10! I ended up paying $8. I did find a copy of Elder's book (no longer available) for $60. Even if I can find one for $200-300, that is very manageable - and a helluva lot cheaper than forking out a grand!

  12. Think they are right ,unless the riders took Substantial pay cut. Even then I doubt it would be viable for British League Speedway.

  14. That was Bob Sarkegian, who had an Indian dealership in San Diego. He was actually a pretty accomplished rider, often being mentioned alongside such legends as Ralph Hepburn, Jim Davis, and Ray Weishaar.

  15. You know, I actually wondered the same thing! Maybe that should be 1926/27 instead? Thing is, perhaps he hadn't actually taken up "speedway" at that point? The trouble with the bios on the Hall of Fame is that they aren't usually that detailed, certainly not enough for people like us! I've actually been trying tonight, to find more specifics on his non-speedway career..

  20. given that people have paid subscriptions for more content than speedway you couldn't expect those figures for a pay per view but even if you got 50% at £5 per event (c20 heat individual, 4TT, pairs etc) you're into £200k income. I'm no expert on the costs of running a meeting but I can't imagine £200k wouldn't cover it. alas I think the window of opportunity has passed and now our screens will be filled with millionaires who didn't want to entertain us when we needed them to. whilst our under paid speedway riders who I'm sure would have jumped at the chance to entertain are still sat twiddling their thumbs earning nothing for another six weeks at least. we've all been let down during this pandemic but you do have to feel for the riders.

  21. The mid-1960s saw a number of team managers for Great Britain and England. In 1964 Tommy Price was team manager for the tests against USSR, which GB won 3-0. During 1965, when GB defeated USSR 5-0, Charles Foot took charge at Wimbledon and Coventry, Charles Ochiltree at Sheffield, Mike Parker at Belle Vue and Ronnie Greene at Newport. Vic Gooden was team manager when GB beat Poland 3-0 in 1966. The same year, England defeated USSR 4-1, managed by Bill Bridgett at Newcastle, Frank Varey at Halifax, Mike Parker at Wolverhampton and Charles Ochiltree at West Ham. I don't have a note of the team manager for the test at Exeter. Bill Bridgett was the losing team manager. Charles Foot managed the England team beaten by Sweden at Exeter in 1967. GB beat Poland 3-2 that year, managed by Wally Mawdsley at West Ham (lost), Ronnie Greene at Poole, Charles Ochiltree at Wolverhampton, Ron Wilson at Halifax (lost) and Ian Hoskins at Newcastle,

  23. The league will restart on 11 August. In the press release it says that they are planning on and working on a financial solution that will allow them to run the league without spectators even though spectators to some extent might be allowed once the league starts. https://www.elitspeedway.com/artikel/xekkakb7p-21mi1/bauhaus-ligan-startar-11-e-augusti

  24. Ekstraliga being shown live on Premier Sports @ £9.99 a month for 6 month contract... think I may have a punt for that price, especially as I've spent £0.00 on Speedway so far this year!

  25. Hello Brian, Sorry for the delay in replying. I have found a photograph of Hugh, it is part of a photograph taken with his father and all of his siblings. Looking at it I think it must have been taken not long before he was killed. I hope this is of use to you. Once this virus has passed, I hope to visit the plaque with my husband and oldest son, and bring Hugh’s brother Malcolm and his daughter. Kindest regards Chris Tuck (nee Watkinson)
