While there is a administrative ruling body individual teams must be able to make decisions and not be forced into competing because the majority of its members do want to run. As the Glasgow Promotion have pointed out the Scottish Government have different restrictions and rules in place to that imposed by Westminster so running North of the Border could be different. If speedway is run this year it will be on a very diluted level with the unavailability of overseas riders having a major impact. A diluted sport can only be harmful and would do nothing to attract new fans or sponsors. Plus we don't want to put further stress on the NHS by sending injuries to A&E dept in these times. I would suggest this is an ideal time for the ruling bodies to have a good think about the future of the sport and decide in which direction to move forward. Stay safe everyone and remember there is more to life than speedway9 points

Glasgow's decision has to be the correct one given the applied logic, acknowledging what we already know and anticipate in the coming months - add to that any currently unknown additional constraints likely to yet lay ahead this year, and not to mention any economic factors affecting prospective crowd levels. Whilst the eternal optimism and positive intent shared by the BSPA announcements in recent months is admirable in many ways, it does suggest a blind obsession just to be able to run at all costs, and probably little consideration for riders, supporters and sponsors! It'll now be tricky for the BSPA to 'out logic' Glasgow's stance, even more so if other clubs shortly line up on the sidelines this season. One further observation. Can those clubs allegedly prepared to run this season please explain how they've been able to go, in one close season, from "we need more supporters to make ends meet" to "we're happy to run in front of a fraction of our usual crowd level" - something doesn't add up! Are those clubs risking the very futures of their club? Unprecedented times indeed.7 points

Glasgow's decision is the correct one in their circumstances. The very fact of their recent success in filling a compact little stadium so full means that social distancing of regular spectators at Ashfield would be nigh-on impossible. Other clubs, with more-spacious arenas (King's Lynn, Peterboro, Isle of Wight, Ipswich and Berwick come to mind) could probably get their regular attendances in while socially-distanced, if they wanted to. Other places, where spectating is currently limited to small parts of a stadium, might be able (with H&S and landlords' approval) be able to reopen long-closed areas and space people out. But in Glasgow's case this would be quite impossible, and their well-timed announcement is absolutely on the button.6 points

Personally this decision is the correct and sensible one. This virus will return with a vengance at some point. My youngest daughter is a nurse working on the covid ward at the Queen Elizabeth. and in her words to me is to be careful whilst out working as the things she has seen and had to do are horrific. So with a predominately ageing fan base this is the only decision to be made.4 points

Agreed, however.. A proper professional sport should have such decisions made by its governing body, and not unilaterally by individual members of that organisation... As that just leads to chaos as each member seeks out getting their own way based on their own needs and wants.. Fair play to Glasgow for their leadership on this matter, however the sport has a National leadership team who should be leading the way forward and agreeing the process to be followed..3 points

Finnish SM-liiga will start on June 17th at Seinäjoki with all five teams taking part. With current covid-19 restrictions in place until the end of July we are allowed to have sporting events for the athletes + crowd of 500. So basically business as usual with social distancing added. We have a few meetings from May postponed without a new date, but expect them all (except LT) to find a new date later in the year. If there a second wave of covid19 things might change. But ATM is going ahead. For a second year the series has a facebook site under ”speedway sm-liiga”.2 points

Unfortunately in these covid days and going forward, health and safety will be a big thing, ( THJ will probably be aware of the big ins and ous of this in his line of work) would the promotion/ volunteers be willing/know all about this ? Will it be worth the hassel for what may only be a season of 2 months if we are lucky. If all h+s is done would a crowd turn up to watch? If I were a promoter I would think the hassel for a short season would not be worth it, that's without the potential rider issue. I think hard as it is to think like this, I would abandon the season, re-group and focus on 2021, if they can afford to do it, as for many their business and sponsor's businesses may have taken a very big hit in these times. Sorry if this sounds bleak but IMO that's where the sport is. the above is taken from what I wrote on the Newcastle thread, think it applies to all speedway tracks/stadiums. i think once again Glasgow have been forward thinking in deciding to cancel 2020 season. I think they will be first of many making the same decision2 points

Never understood this Cardiff is boring rhetoric. Missed only 1 Cardiff GP. In all the times I did attend I cant remember any that were boring. Racing can be better at other tracks of course but there is always drama, excitement and an unrivaled atmosphere.2 points

And notable for giving a thorough and candid explanation. (Contrast with BSI's prevarication over Cardiff)2 points

Very sensible and mature decision by the Glasgow Management tonight. And they are to be applauded in the honest and open explanation of how they came to make it. Very bad news nonetheless.2 points

Also ice can happen in November ( or even October as Workington found when having last meeting of h18tory season called off ) making it impossible to run speedway or prepare a track, I think the best thing that could happen is call off the 2020 season, run with the same riders, if possible in 2021. If any promotion want to run speedway maybe try a one off league with whoever is brave enough to run, or run challenge fixtures. As I don't think Glasgow will be the only ones not running in 20201 point

I think the main problem regarding up this season would be the restrictions imposed by Governments and testing procedures and cost ,maybe by next season these will be lifted to make running more viable. If some Promotions want to take the gamble that’s their prerogative.Given the financial state of the sport ,I’m not convinced running this season is wise. But who knows!!1 point

For a Birmingham fan, 1974 has to be the favourite year. Double winners, beating Eastbourne in the KOC final 2nd leg in front of the Lord Mayor. And most of the team lived within a mile radius of Perry Barr. Perfect.1 point

Entirely sensible decision from Glasgow, and now one club has blinked I think more clubs will follow. Time to put an end to 2020 and look to 2021, same teams same rules, clubs will start in a reasonably decent financial situation in fact some will start in a very healthy situation which has to be a positive.1 point

Rumours on the grapevine is Somerset is one to, which I hope is not true. But I do think that there will be a few more teams that will not start this short season.1 point

I'd take a guess after Glasgow's announcement, there is likely to be a few more that follow too....1 point

Well done to the Glasgow promotion for making a clearly defined decision ---about Glasgow. As they rightly point out in the statement, every club is different with different stadium set-ups, access etc, quite apart from the availability of riders if and when the sport is given guidance to resume. Glasgow's stated main income source is from attendances (rather than advertising, sponsorship, food and beverage etc) so their decision is clearly made with that uppermost in their minds if social distancing continues as it is now - especially as their recent video 'In The Red' stated they are still losing £100k per season!!! They are not trying to force their decision on other clubs - but other clubs may well make a similar decision based upon their own circumstances but equally they may not1 point

The Glasgow decision was made by professional people that run a successful business. Well done to them.1 point

It all makes sense and no point in thinking that the right conditions will prevail later in the year. Clarity from a management team is so good. All clubs should take note and abandon any idea of league racing in 2020. If racing is possible come up with a UK wide individual knock out competition, and pairs competition where they can represent sponsors or clubs and run as many rounds at those tracks that are able to open but that should be it.1 point

Honestly What a shame and the reasoning behind the statement makes total sense... promotion doing what they deem is the right thing for the safety of their fan base... fair play to them and I don't think they will be the last... unfortunately... Regards THJ1 point

There really is no debate to be had here. Speedway is barely profitable with paying fans, it won’t happen behind closed doors here. If it does it is financial suicide.1 point

From a speedway fans stand point. It the most polished thing we've had. Once again, glasgow have gone above and beyond in terms of their media and marketing. But from a netural stand point, by god was it boring. Its essentially an hour and half of "look how bloody fantastic Glasgow speedway is!" There was very little focus on the riders and literally other than a brief explanation of the points system there was very little focus on the racing. Just a little Glasgow beat [insert team here]. And literally the only interesting thing that happened (the Eastbourne incident) they cut away from! I hate to say it, but it was an absolutely pointless documentary. I dont really know who the documentary is for. It cant be the diehards, as we already know how much Glasgow have pumped into the speedway and how the season unfolded. It can't be the newbies as it has very little focus on the racing and action. It just feels like a 'look how big my d*ck is' hour long special. The biggest problem is it felt was done by a child with ADHD who'd just downed his last bag of skittles. It was all over the place and just couldn't focus on one subject. What it should have been is a focus on what fans care about. The racing, the riders and the drama. Which was touched on briefly, but only very briefly.1 point

I doubt you will get your wish. It is something that is part of the history of the sport & as such will continue to be a topic for discussion. It highlights the actions of certain members of the BSPA & their attempts to put others out of business using gutter tactics.0 points
