  1. I have to say the Star has been very interesting during the pandemic. An exceptional effort in my view.

  2. Mine was 51 years ago, and I remember it like yesterday. 51 years before that, and we were still fighting in WWI. That does make make us feel old, eh?

  3. Another name he got occasionally was Geordie Nut. Presumably as he was never without his wooly hat.

  4. Steve mentioned Erik in the original post... Thing is, there are MANY riders who rode for only one British club, but only had one or two seasons in the UK. They do fit the criteria, but cannot be classed as "servants". Riders like Kafel, Szczepanik, Olkiewicz, Zabik, Grubmuller, Marzotto etc. Even Brad Oxley...

  10. But are free to watch on Facebook on ‘continental speedway’ page on reliable and ad free links. It’s well worth joining the page for the links alone.

  13. There really is no debate to be had here. Speedway is barely profitable with paying fans, it won’t happen behind closed doors here. If it does it is financial suicide.

  14. Many years ago I used to get the Star at one of the local tracks most weeks, then during the winter months it was obtainable from my nearest newsagent. I could be wrong, but I have a vague recollection that the Speedway Star and Soccer Star magazines were readily available 'off the shelf'. However, due to the increased popularity of the sport in my area at the time, I placed an order with the newsagent from October 1965 to ensure I received a weekly copy during the winter. A couple of years later I decided to take out a postal subscription, but then reverted to ordering from a newsagent from 1978 onwards after moving house. I changed back to postal delivery some 10 years or so later. I would guess that the number of times I have received my copy late from whatever source could be counted on the fingers of two hands. It has never failed to arrive and I don't think it has ever been more than 2 days late. I am very fortunate that the postal service here is fully functioning even now, with Saturday deliveries of post and parcels still taking place. The only thing that frustrates me is that I somehow mislaid three copies from 1952, two copies from 1953 and one from 1955. I only discovered this when I finally got round to putting the earlier years in binders. I echo the sentiments of others when saying well done to everyone involved for continuing to produce an excellent magazine during the present situation. I am sure that Eric (Linden) would approve.

  16. You could also had fiction between a rider and management or fans. Erik Gundersen only rode for Cradley Heath AKA Cradley. It will be far easier to find a foreign rider that rode for a single club than a British one.

  18. Speedway Star has been excellent in the pandemic. Distribution to Shops and via Royal Mail is NOT fault of Speedway Star. Distribution staff are allowed to be ill an to self isolate too you know! No mail on a Saturday and Wednesday in many areas was announced in April, obviously that affects distribution day and also Saturday delivery in many places so Monday / Tuesday is effectively Thursday/Friday in terms of "working days". Mine arrives at newsagents mostly Thursday, occasionally Friday and a few times Saturday. Have total 100% admiration for James Easter and all he does has done for Speedway and in Business. My only gripe, mentioned before is the continual and it seems preferential treatment to Clubs served by Curtis Sport and it's bloggers. In the midst of some outstanding journalism by Oakes / Burbidge / Skeels / Lanning , the weak link are the few paragraphs of "current news content" that invariably are a free advert for the latest Curtis Sport publication, which to coin a phrase "once you've read one, you've read em all". Very formulaic. Good to see some of the old regulars and regional reporters back too, like Brian Burford; Andrew Edwards; Tony McDonald; Phil Chard and Brian Owen in recent weeks. Superior local journalists who used to serve the Star well before the Curtis blogger take over.

  19. Honestly I'm not that sure where the Monika Pepsi come from to be fair and Tsunami has gave a good response and Gavin Parr is also someone who could shed some light on it... but I remember going to the world final as a kid in 73 and he was on our bus (one bus of about eleven I think that went from Brough that year) and he was Pepsi George then and I asked why he was called that and the simple answer was he didnt drink and if he was ever asked if he wanted one his response was I'll have a Pepsi... but he still went to pubs and the club and was high up in the RAOB (I think) and done a lot for charity but he never really mentioned anything about that... however as often as he went out he wouldn't drink apparently... not sure how true that was but it sounded feasible... another genuinely nice bloke who loved his Speedway and followed the Diamonds for years and some of the pictures at the afterwards of his funeral were very interesting... Another one sadly missed Regards THJ

  25. THE magazine is printed on a Tuesday evening and collected by Royal Mail in the early hours of Wednesday from printers. As previously stated, having paid for first class mail next day delivery should be the norm but right now it is very erratic. The only consolation is that so much of the current content is not dated and, hopefully, provides entertaining reading whenever you get it.

  26. Steve, just want to clarify your last post re the best speedway year (1965 of course). I just want to respectfully note that in 1965 both the Golden Helmet and Silver Sash match races ran in tandem. The Golden Helmet was a best of three races on the holders and challengers home tracks. If after two meetings on this basis there was a tie, a third best of three races at a neutral track occurred. This was a continuation of the Golden Helmet Match Races which were in the old pre-amalgamation National League. The monthly challenger was nominated by the promoters committee ( I think). The competition you refer to which involved the highest opposition rider against the holder -if they met in the same meeting -was the Silver Sash. This was a continuation of the pre-amalgamation Provincial League match race championship. The Golden Helmet was run on a monthly basis so in 1965 there was a Golden Helmet championship in each of the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October. Barry Briggs won every one over 2 legs-the guys he beat over 2 legs -(nobody took him to a third leg decider) were in order; May- Charlie Monk: June -Ken Mckinlay (I saw the second leg of that at Newport on June 11th): July-George Hunter: August- Nigel Boocock:, September- Sverre Harrfeldt: and October- Olle Nygren So Barry kept the Golden helmet over the close season and was the holder when 1966 started. I was interested to see that Charlie Monk was the first nominee for Barry to ride against-this shows the high regard which Charlie was held in-but also maybe because the logical first PL challenger would have been Ivan Mauger who unfortunately had an accident very early in the season and was unavailable As regards the Silver Sash that year-that was competed for far more frequently ( 7 times in May alone) of course depending on the schedule, there were various holders-in order Pete Jarman, Olle Nygren, Jim Lighfoot,, Ken McKinlay, Bob Andrews Eric Boocock, Jimmy Gooch and Colin Pratt-who was the holder at the end of the season. I got to see one of those races. In the Newport v. Wolves fixture on April 19th Pete Jarman was the holder, Jack Biggs was the highest Newport scorer -so the Silver sash match race was Pete v. Jackie- Pete won. Pete Jarman was the first holder in 1965 because the pre season champ was Ivan -who lost to Pete by default because of his injury (see above). The only reason I know all this is because I kept (and still have) The British Speedway Handbook -1966 Edition which covered the 1965 season. Hope this post brings back some memories of other forumlanders who can say about 1965 "I woz there"!!!!!

  28. You might be right. You might be wrong. No one knows. What the Stadium employee says means sweet FA doesn't it. I'm getting iritated reading opinion of this sort as it has no susbstance. Pure guesswork and just alarmist for some people.

  29. How arrogant to think that your negativity is automatically 'realistic'. That's an easy cop-out. Yes people's lives are essential but that's no justification for trying to destroy the efforts of those trying to save their businesses and sport by fighting to the last chance is extinguished. Reality hurts, but nothing damages more than people trying to be clever by saying nothiong's possible and we should all give up. The right path is to monitor government guidelines and respond accordingly. What damages is just sitting on your hands, decrying the efforts of others and claiming the 'realism' moral high ground, but then that's far easier isn't it and if you're wrong people will be too delighted to think of your comments. I don't know whether we'll get any speedway this year and given the speed now with how matters are changing it would be damaging and stupid just to give up and say how 'realistic' you are. If the efforts don't work, fine, but at least they TRIED.
