  1. From Mildenhall Speedway - Danny’s Day (a show for the showman) – Sunday 28th June at Mildenhall Speedway The Mildenhall ‘Fen Tigers’, proudly sponsored by Manchetts Rescue and Recovery, will host a charity testimonial meeting for Speedway’s ‘Mr. Entertainer’ Danny Ayres on Sunday 28th June at 3pm to raise funds for Danny’s dependents following his sad passing this weekend. Following a positive day of discussions with BSPA Chairman Rob Godfrey, Ipswich promoter Chris Louis and Kent promoter Len Silver it has been agreed that the meeting format will be a Four Team Tournament involving the Fen Tigers, Kent, Ipswich and Scunthorpe. The Mildenhall management would like to thank all three for their support and backing of this event and will now closely work with them to put together a meeting worthy of the memory of the man widely known throughout speedway circles as Mr. Entertainer. Mildenhall promoter Greg Palmer added – “We are proud as a club to be hosting this event in Danny’s memory, he was a special person and was so proud to ride for Mildenhall, as we were to have him in our team. We will do everything in our power to make this a special occasion and put together a day that everyone will remember. All profits form the meeting will go to his dependents and we will now start working on sponsorship opportunities for the day with the management teams from Ipswich, Scunthorpe and Kent. I would like to thank Rob Godfrey, Chris Louis and Len Silver for their wholehearted support and we will let fans know in the next few weeks how they can be a part of ‘Danny’s Day’”.

  2. I have to say what a brave brave lady she is to share those words with us, at what must be an incredibly difficult time for her at this sad time, condolences to her and the whole family. Danny Ayres was THE entertainer and he gave everything every time he got on a Speedway bike for every team he rode for over the years, I can only say "Gone but not forgotten" hopefully you have now found peace, RIP Danny Ayres..

  3. You're probably right there, although you'd hope he passed on his experience. I also remember, now the medication's kicking in, that Eric Boothroyd had the job of track inspector once. So, after they've sorted out Poole will there be enough time in the season to do the rest?

  6. Both doc bridget and colin had totally different jobs there were looking more after fences airbags and to make sure everything else was in order. The jobs Terry and Andy are doing is to get tracks more in line with each other and get more consistent tracks and better racing.

  9. Not sure what level of the English football pyramid Berwick would have to join but assume that it's something like the Northern Alliance. I would respectfully suggest that is something way below Lowland League - or East of Scotland League for that matter - level and might be quite a hard sell to players and the public alike. There must be a way around the grant system as the likes of Newport, Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham have, over the years, not seemed to struggle from being in the English Football League. Think the important focus of the plan is that Shielfield could become a genuine asset and focal point for sport in Berwick rather than a football ground which also stages speedway.

  11. RE Sunday, absolutely, the A414 you have the North Weald market traffic as well as the horse boxes to deal with, like Arena Essex, it really comes down to one true option, Saturday evenings.

  14. 1st of the Polish national team`s test matches has been announced and they will meet Australia in Torun with a start time of 2pm local(1pm UK time). The teams will be at full strength( apart from those Polish riders on a ban from the national team). I think this is the last match under the current contract held by TVP for live TV coverage.

  16. Thanks for the clarification. Prior to the 2003 season I helped Colin on a couple of occasions getting the Cowley circuit ready for the new season after it was left unattended for most of the winter. The track, I remember, was in a right state with bumps all over the place and this showed in the first few meetings of the season.

  20. My Injustice Pts Table for FIM Ice Gladiators:- ie Actual Pts scored against new FIM scoring system........... Simon +7, N.Svensson & Hutla +3, S.Svensson,Zorn,Ledstrom & Iwema +2, Valeev +1, Haarahiltunen, Ebner & Weber 0. Koltakov,Ivanov & Kononov minus 1 & Khomitsevich minus 2. So after 2 Finals the FIM scoring system has given Ivanov a additional point lead in the Championship over Khomitsevich & actually penalised all the Russians except Valeev. Then given extra unearned pts to the non Russians. No wonder the Russian forum fans are unhappy along with me of course. Castagna I plead for next season "It should be points scored no more no less!!!" However, at least I have a plus today. I got my 3 Wroclaw GP tickets!!! Any comments or am I just being a grumpy old man?

  22. Good idea that. Just in case they need the link.. here it is. https://www.tidetimes.org.uk/poole-harbour-tide-times Seriously tho, good idea and hopefully the tracks will take on board the years of experience the two have.

  23. You say that now, but what if your choice (Scott Nichols?) and the alternatives have a terrible start to the season and are clearly on the slide, and Nicol puts two points on his average? It’s not as if there were obvious alternatives to replace the other six.
    1 point
  24. So we can ignore averages? in that case its an awful team should of gone with 1. Woffinden 2. Lindgren 3. Madsen 4. Doyle 5. Zmarlik 6. Dudek 7. Sayfutdinov to be serious I haven't seen anyone say that the Wolves team isn't good just that it was stupid to build 2pts under the limit which there is no argument for.. it is a good team but it should and could of been stronger at it was stupid not to make it so

  25. Nothing would surprise me concerning team places wouldn’t be shocked if they came in we’ll below pts limit again

  26. Temperature dictates it. You try and freeze a track with cold water in -20c you get layers on top of each other that will come off when racing. If its really cold the ice will chop up and chunks could get loose... As a kid I used to help with hockey rinks outside. Give us -5 to -10 and warm water we’d give you a rink second to none. Thats when the warm water has enough time to melt the top of the excisting ice and becomes solid... Some hockey rinks use chenimicals in the water, or at least did, to help with the ice. Soft ice stays together better, I’d say its more predictable to ride on than the kind that lets go when you turn to a corner. What is good or best is subjective. I’d guess a well prepared track with -5 to -10 on raceday is as good as it can get. Never heard anything positive if it goes below -20. On the other end of the scale it naturally starts to melt after 0, so its somewhere in between...

  27. Very sad situation but i cant see why they would not use the number 7 jacket Without sounding like i dont care, Ipswich lost the great Billy Sanders during a season and his race jacket carried on.........we did eventually have the Billy Sanders memorial meeting ( a certain Mr Rickardssons first meeting for us)........................and as a tragedy as this is regarding Danny Ayres , he hasnt actualy turned a wheel for the club................a collection, a meeting as well , would seem to be the correct route for me raising money for those he has left behind It does lead us onto team building as well so not sure who we may have lined up now

  28. 1. Redcar - strong top 5 especially the top 3, if the reserves show improvement they definitely look strong. 2. Leicester - very strong top 5 but I don't think the reserves are the strongest 3. Eastbourne - will be strong at home and will take some points away from home. 4. Somerset - bit of bias but the side is better than people think with improvement in there. 5. Poole - top 3 is good but with 2 new Aussies who will take time to adjust and imo not the strongest engine room they just miss out. 6. Glasgow - Cook is the strongest in the league but Wells/Ostergaard/Sedgmen isn't a great top end, improvement from the lower end but not enough. 7. Birmingham - stronger than last season but still not enough to challenge for play offs. 8. Scunthorpe - hit by the sad loss to Danny Ayres {R.I.P} solid depth but I don't think strong enough. 9. Edinburgh - two new riders in the main body and I don't see a lot of improvement at reserve. 10. Berwick - Doolan leaves a big gap imo. I hope the reserves do well but big shoes to fill. 11. Kent - an ok side but not as strong as other sides 12. Newcastle - at least they have speedway this season but all in all a poor side

  29. A lot of Northern non league clubs pay more than Berwick, despite crowds not being to dissimilar, would still be hard attracting players. Only plus side would be banking on better Scottish players wanting to travel down to Berwick to hopefully “be seen” in an English league. I believe any grants would be for the stadium and surrounding community facilities at Shielfield rather than to BRFC itself, hence the proposed Berwick Sports Foundation which would take over the lease of Shielfield with BRFC SC (SC) distancing themselves from it to gain eligibility for funding.

  38. It has been mentioned on the BSPA site that there might be a Most Entertaining Rider Award in memory of Danny. There is, also, a justgiving/crowdfunding page started, hoping to reach £1000. I think that was bust within an hour & now stands at over £3400. Well done to all.

  40. This is shocking! For those that have not seen Danny ride, I can assure you he really was something worth watching. His style, his emotion he showed for winning and losing, the way he was with the fans, the way he played up to the crowd (both home and away fans). He was a real personality. Right up there with the likes of Screenie, Adam Skorniki and Magnus Zetterstom It is so, so sad that someone who goes about making other people lives a little bit better could be struggling so much with his own. And I really mean that, I would have gone home with a smile on my face every time I saw him ride, little knowing that maybe, he didnt feel so good. I almost feel an element of guilt for that.

  41. I hope that British Speedway uses this tragedy to kick start a programme of mental health support for everyone involved in the sport.

  42. The first time i see Danny ride live was in the NL fixture between Swindon /Coventry a few seasons ago and you are right he made a real impression. The meeting was meaningless but he made the meeting got the place rocking i had not seen that happen for a number of years. He scored a 15 point maximum and i went home thinking god this guy has real passion the past day really has shocked me and Speedway has lost a real good un.
    1 point
  43. That's true. As for mental health, never assume that people are ok no matter what their demeanour, and do practice the always ask twice technique when asking if someone is ok. We all say yes as standard for 99% of the time but if you ask again "Are you really ok?" then you may get a different answer. Tragic loss.

  45. I think this Wolves team could be towards the top end of the table and stand every chance of getting to the play offs. They qualified last season despite Thorsell and Morris being out for a large chunk of the season and then needing time to get competitive. The 2020 team has a number of riders that could improve their average. But none of that argument changes the fact that they could have had a team improving from a 2 point higher base.

  46. If one ever needed proof that life is not fair, this is it. RIP Danny

  47. Which again shows what a ridiculous decision it was. They had the opportunity to track a team that would dominate.. and bring in the crowds as a result.

  48. As a 21 year old Charles Wright was averaging less than 4 for Redcar in the second tier. So to suggest that Nathan Greaves can be so casually discarded seems very harsh. (And after 6 years of Conference league experience Paul Starke averaged below 2.5 for Newcastle in the PL). We need the likes of Greaves, Hume and Bowtell to have decent opportunities to continue their careers as we continue to find it more and more difficult to attract riders from abroad.
