  1. What he said in thr Speedway Star referring to signing for Belle Vue was, "It's not a second option for me.Belle vue and Peterborough are both first options I could have picked from and I am happy to be with the Aces. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that riders say whatever is expedient at the time. I suspect that if another club had come in with a better offer he wouldn't be riding for either of our clubs. Just as most of us would work for whoever offered us the best deal.

  2. Yep hopefully he’ll come to Ipswich and get about 7 and then 14-15 at both Peterborough and Kings Lynn if buster doesn’t think Kenneth isn’t one of the best riders in the league still then he needs to have a little look around - Kenneth isn’t one of the top 8 in the world anymore but only Doyle in our league is!! In theory there’s 3 heat leader berths in every team so that 21 heat leaders.....I’d love for buster to try convince anyone there’s 21 riders ahead of Kenneth riding in the uk this year!!!

  3. Better off without him as is the whole of Speedway, if you don't like it Berge then begger off. Got enough problems as it is without the incredible sulk kicking off every year.

  4. I think people are missing the point, if there is a benefit to this drip feeding news approach (and I’m not necessarily saying there is, but I’m keeping an open mind) then it’s not for the benefit of posters on here who think about speedway every day, but more those who stop thinking about it in October and start again in March and those who go occasionally or haven’t been yet. Also struggling to see why this team is so uninspiring and awful....all seven riders appeared in a team which comfortably finished top last year and although we’ve lost a heat leader it looks a competitive team in what is again a weaker league. Perhaps people wanted things freshening up with a few new faces and I can understand that.

  5. If you're a hipster you'll name drop this band, Black Midi, every chance you'll get. They are the hottest band in London right now..... and look what they've done So perhaps speedway isn't just for old folks in anoraks after all. Enjoy

  10. Absolutely. Promoters have to be so careful they get the right blend of fans allowed to attend matches. An individual interview should be conducted before access to the stadium is allowed, they can't risk the happy clappers being put off from coming back because of too many miserable sods having been let in. PS. RIP Jeremy Hardy

  11. Has there been regular EDP back pages / Radio Norfolk slots etc to keep this media hype going thru the winter? Do you get these even when signings are announced? Ipswich traditionally name all 7 and early (this year has had different issues) We then see at least weekly bits in The Ipswich Star and regular slots in sports news bulletins on Radio Suffolk even thru winter as well as dedicated sections on drivetime show You dont need to have a signing to announce to have a media slot so long as you have the structure and relationship with the outlets

  12. Who was the German that Ipswich had last season , got injured quite early in the season? Would he be a 4 or still 5 something?

  13. I hope Bjerre does really well not after Buster said he wasn't a UK heat leader anymore.

  14. That's exactly how it will happen. He will ride 1 meeting on borrowed machinery etc then we will replace him with a rider up to 5.5ish. Personally don't like the sound of it as I would rather win fair but as shown last year. Cheating is now allowed

  16. Yep, the club needs to keep the media exposure and fans on the edge of their seats about top draw signings Kerr, MPT, Riss, Jorgensen What a team to get the ladies juices flowing and the men to get a rock on over

  20. Well someone I guess at the Star also came up with the story about how Coventry’s East German,Gerhard Uhlenbrock escaped Communism hidden in a sidecar or maybe he had his family hidden.Anyway it was fake news as it is known nowadays

  21. We have had some shocking crowds when the weather has played a part but the crowds ain't as bad as you think, People just look at only 2 blocks being full in grandstand and think there's only a few 100 there. But in fact there is about 800. And that's just grandstand. South stand is usually full with probably a good 800-100 in there. Regarding finances I don't know much about them but did hear they lost 80k last year. But that was alot less then previous year. They are hoping to gradually bring it down to break even within 5 years. How they will do that I'm not sure as they are not particularly good at promoting like every other promoter. But Adrian is a clever men. I'm sure he has something up his sleeve. And for anyone thinking he's ready to jump ship and they are not committed. Adrian for 2 years has lived in a hotel all week away from his family that he/club pay for. But now he's buying a house not far from the track to live up here. So clearly they are here for the long haul

  22. So from claiming to have all the facts, it's now gone to having zero facts, and it's descended to nothing more than one of those Speedway Star letters... "I've been a fan for 40 years, so my own odd opinion is more valid than everyone else's..." and "I have some good mates"

  23. The crowds were far from poor in respect of what a decent speedway crowd looks like today. No official attendance records are ever published but like I said countless times last year, it’s pretty easy to guess at the NSS. I would say we averaged around 1.5k which certainly isn’t poor. It’s probably one of the highest in the uk. The rent is high but nothing like it was in the first season. It was renegotiated. That said, the losses last season would be 5 figures I’m pretty sure of that.

  24. No it doesn't. What you are (mis)reading there is the total at the bottom of an abbreviated balance sheet, not a Profit & Loss account. As with all small companies they only have to file micro accounts. They only need to file an abbreviated balance sheet and do not have to file the profit and loss account. So you will not be able to see what profit or loss was made. They may have had to spend £250,000 buying all kinds of intangibles to take over the club, and only lost £20k running the season. On the other hand the owners could have injected £1M into the project and acually lost £1.25M running the season. There's no way of knowing without the information.

  27. Yes I recall when 'The Rebels' visited Hackney in 1975 with Dag in the team we pulled off a tremendous win and Christer registered probably his best return for 'The Hawks' of 13 points. Highlights of that meeting are featured on the 'London Tracks' DVD...a great addition to my nostalgia collection.

  29. He needs one more Home League match. BV first Home League match is 29th April, and with the cut off being 23rd April, I don’t think his average would actually change until 6th May. He would do 3 away League matches prior to 6th May.

  32. That restaurant/stand at Oxford was probably the best place i have ever watched speedway along with the brilliant Plough Lane ( that place was special). From 1984/88 i probably only missed about five meetings Hagonshocker( forum member a great mate did the same.Along the way we saw the special Nielsen dominate and the likes of Cox,Sorensen Dugard develop that Friday night was a special one always remember Oxford had a brilliant souvenir shop.

  33. Guess the first period you started watching is always the fondest. I was lucky to start at Plough Lane when Varg-Olle was ruling the roost and loved watching the stars of the day under the floodlghts, especially on those nights when the place was packed! That love affair lasted until the dark day when our local hero,Tommy Jansson tragically died.I still continued until the end of the ‘77 season, then my visits were somewhat sporadic Until I started going regularly again ,and being more mobile, also further afield in 1984.That period, which I also loved lasted until the Dons closed in 1991,but have to admit the last season or so,I was going out of routine instead of the love of the sport Then on moving to Hamburg I rediscovered the sport on seeing the track magazine Bahnsport Aktuel at a local railway station, but it took me a year or so to get to a track, because I first had to find out where they were and had missed the local meetings for that season anyway. From memory the first meeting was a Vojens GP which TRick won in 2003-4,then I found Brokstedt wasn’t more than an hour away I also love reading about the early pre-war daysand would love to get in a time machine and go back to see some of those old tracks and stars

  34. Early 60's to 1970 - loved the speedway asa youngster. Visits by Russian and Polish teams, either national or club. They rode Eso/Jawa with "funny" handlebars clipped to the front forks. Plechanov, Samaradov, Gab Kadirov, Kurilenko etc. For the Poles Zyto, Pogoselski, Migos plus other names I couldnt say. The Swedes starting to rule the roost with Fundin, Knuttson, Sjoston, Bengt Jannsson, Goto Nordin, Bernie Persson (not one of my favourites). Seeing Hyde Road bulging when it was British League Riders Championship, and that continued thro the 70's and 80's. Brilliant days. Then the 70's - Britain became top dog, if Team GB had riders now like then GB would be top again. Some Americans on the scene and of course the next dominent country Denmark. The years Peter Collins/Chris Morton burst on the scene with their style of excitement. Ivan and Olle continued domineering, Anders Michanek andHans Neilson adding to a classic time period. Those were the days my friends (I could burst out in song but I dont have Mary Hopkins voice).

  35. So with Berge quitting Somerset because he couldn't get a full-time mechanic in the UK, what does that mean for BV? A predicted short stay to be replaced by a higher averaged rider after 1 meeting when his rolling average changes?
    1 point
  36. He left Belle Vue under a cloud to sign for Peterborough spent many years at the showground even rode for them to help Rathbone out due to injuries in the lower division and as its been said was negotiating to return to Peterborough it was only Buster Chapman that stopped him returning to the Panthers again this season so you have him to thank for that.

  37. The first Scandinavian I remember was Dag Lovaas in 74. My first speedway memory is of a rider in yellow leathers gliding effortlessly around the Wick. I remember how sad I was when he wasn't there the following year.

  38. 63-73 lots of speedway in London, then watching Swindon on a Saturday night. All those well attended individual meets, and test matches. Lots of teams in British League, and about 30 meetings a season, on Saturdays. Speedway live on BBC and ITV

  39. The management really kept that one as a surprise didn't they? They might as well confirm MPT, Kerr, Riss & Jorgensen while they're at it. Welcome back Ty.

  40. PTA, I think you are right. The Team has lots of potential. Still think BV and fans will miss Cookie. Top man. It looks like the team has been put together on a tight budget but with the astronomical losses reported at BV it is not a surprise. IMO this is not a nailed on play off team. Dan B will be one of the keys to whether BV will make the play offs. Hope so but time will tell.

  41. Dick Barrie (press officer at Berwick?) may be your best bet. I'm sure he was the one running it from 2010 - 2012. After that Jamie Swales took it over for a bit.

  42. I agree about the entertainment. Unfortunately, there's not many riders who could replace him and match the excitement he often created. I also think you have a point about starting at no. 1 although with Cook and Andersen in the team I don't think he will have the same pressure that he had at Somerset. The fans may also have to realise that, like Harris, he can have a slow start to the season but if he does, give him a bit of time and he will more than repay you.

  43. Basically...... Louis needed a number 1 on a specific average, Tungate has had issues with Ippo in the past, so wasn't an option but Harris was. Louis speaks to Chapman and puts the case to them saying Harris fits and could Panthers go with Rohan Chapman thinks this pleases both parties and agrees. Anyone else see this?

  47. Having followed the young lions over the last few years I really can see the national league becoming more entertaining than the elite league in 2019, we suddenly have a boost of young very talented riders who have racing ability at an early age, we all need to get behind every one of them and get speedway back to its rightful place..

  48. I was at the Custom House stadium when that fatal accident happened. I also witnessed the crash where Australian, Dave Wills lost his life on the same track. Watching Speedway racing has given me much pleasure over the years but those are two of the saddest moments,
