Hackney’s planned meeting at Rye House, this coming Sunday against Scunthorpe/Sheffield in NL match has been cancelled. Full press release Here

Was this a Scunthorpe/Sheffield decision not to travel down next Sunday?

I don't know Shadders, but it's possible that they are having a tough time putting out a competitive side.

Or maybe the forecast was bad? ;)

If they are going to have a double-header, then surely 2nd October would be the best option?

What the hell is going on here ,so much messing with the fixtures and going back to Lakeside ugh ??, Why ,horrible track no atmosphere and i suspect vertually no fans..Was looking forward to this fixture at Rye the last Hawks fixture of the season.. Apparently loads turned up at Rye last sunday to see the cancelled meeting..Should have stayed sunbathing in their gardens..

What's going on?

Paul's original posting also pointing out that the rearranged match is to be held at Lakeside (which is indeed what the PR on the link states) has been edited to omit that bit. And my posting welcoming this change has been deleted...

The news is also on the "Hackney experiment" thread, and your comment is still on there.

Really positive news that this last Hawks fixture is now at Lakeside. Details of date, reduced admission etc. in following official PR:

Press Release

Hawks proper send off

While all eyes are currently on the build up to the Elite League Play off the Lakeside management have also confirmed that the last meeting involving their joint shared team Hackney - an NL match vs Scunthorpe will revert to the Raceway and will be staged on Friday October 7th.

This follows the postponement of the meeting which was being kindly due to be staged by Len Silver at Rye House last weekend.

Explains Jon Cook "We had asked Len to take the meeting as the support for NL racing has been poor at Lakeside and we also had a situation where the team had, at the time, a great chance to qualify for the Play offs and were more likely to do that at Rye, with us paying for all the meeting costs. However, following the postponement last week the team has now gone past the cut off date and lost its chance of Play Off qualification due to defeat at Stoke the night before.

"At the same time over the summer the training schools at Arena, run by Linda and George Barclay, have gone from strength to strength and not only represent a great step forward for the club in producing our own riders of the future but also an income that covers the cost of our stadium rental and means we can offer reduced admission for this meeting and can consider our very own third tier Young Hammers team if interest is there from the fans."

Continued Cook " As a result and with the considerable help of Rob Godfrey at Scunthorpe, we are able to stage the meeting on the 7th with admission at just £8 for Adults and Kids for £1 and both Rob and ourselves will be filling any absent riders with the best trainees at our respective Training Schools giving the meeting a real academy feel. We also want to see the great name of Hackney Hawks out in some style as it deserves that so all ex Hawks and Kestrels will be welcome to attend and we will be giving one of the teams body colours away at the end of the action to the person who is lucky enough to pick up a signed programme. I hope those Hammers fans that have stayed away because they didn't like the Hawks moniker will come out and show there is a level of support for us to consider our own team and that Hackney fans take one, perhaps last chance, to 'make it a date Friday at eight'".

Any riders wishing to take part in the afternoon training school can book by calling Linda on 020 8592 3361, with one place to fill on the Hawks team this could be a chance to impress and start a career with the Young Hammers.

Be very interesting to see what the crowd is for this one and if a Lakeside NL side is a real possibility for the future!

Indeed - certainly I read positive vibes in Cookie's quotes that NL-level racing (even if a full League side might be tricky to fit in...) is still very much on the agenda...

i thought it was a good idea when sittingbourne and weymouth just rode trophy fixtures. an ideal solution for those tracks that can't commit to running a full season of matches.

Yes - actually that time it was an event only held that one season (2006 I think it was...) called the Conference Shield: held a little later in the season. Some kind of combo of that and the Trophy for sides unable to commit to a whole NL campaign would be a great idea; and yes, hopefully, 'Sittingbourne' (ie the Iwade-based club) would also be able to take part in that... And how good would it be if Lydd were allowed to as well... :approve:

In fact as Parsloes has said it was the Conference Shield to which you refer but there have been other instances where teams competed in the Trophy only. For instance Wolverhampton and Swindon in 2002, Sheffield in 2004.

Whilst this is better than nothing there are a number of drawbacks not least of all the riders concerned at these Clubs would not get many fixtures and the Trophy was dropped this season for the other tracks as it was always seen as a poorly attended event for Clubs also competing in the League and did not cover costs. In these circumstances too many fixtures that lose money are not viable, operating costs are high enough and spiraling especially as we are seeing rising inflation and in the light of ridiculous fuel costs. I think that as the Government's deficit reduction measures continue all sports are likely to suffer a downturn in attendances as folks' disposable cash diminishes visibly.

I think team sharing is the way forward on the lines of Scunthorpe/Sheffield methodology but the naming problem is one and there was clearly a degree of antipathy to Hackney at Rye House where the Cobras and the Raiders had always been regarded affectionately by the Rye House fans. However, I imagine Len Silver entered into the Hackney experiment to cut costs.

Surely we need to have as many teams as possible in The National League and I wonder if a shared arrangement involving Lakeside/Eastbourne and Birmingham/Coventry would be a way forward for those Clubs.

I hope we will hear news soon about Bodmin and I would love to see the third tier return to Scotland with a shared team between the two Scottish Clubs if that could be agreed. Also the most northerly English Clubs could perhaps sort out an arrangement that would be helpful to themselves and the League.

If we had that many teams we could throw the doors open to young Australians in a controlled fashion and I can think of numerous ways that the present League could be improved. For instance, for the integrity of the League more rapid adjustment made to the average of riders clearly assessed way below their true value indeed this could be done with reference to Australian results ahead of their commencement. The are a number of other anomalous rules that could be looked at and the League has to sell itself to the speedway public with high level;s of consistency in its approach and more professionalism.

the naming of teams is definitley an issue for some fans. the idea of letting long time defunct clubs like boston and hackney run in the league doesn't sit well with me. on the other hand this years combined sheffield and scunny team seems to have no identity, even the BSPA webite not knowing how to list their away fixtures. regarding the CL shield and trophy matches, didn't some teams riding in those matches use riders from teams that were only competing in the league. at wimbledon joel parsons rode for the dons in the trophy and rye house in the league.

So this meeting is going to be watered down with the addition of training day riders in possibly both teams ,confirming this meeting is now no more than a meaningless challenge match..Great exit i dont think..If lakeside run a team in the National League next year i would applaud and support it,,I just dont see it happening,,Willing to eat humble pie if it does...

Okay, so one man's positivity is another's negativity - as your post amply proves..

There's often talk about the NL being for development and a route for young riders to start out, yet here you are decrying the opportunity being given to the best riders shining in a training day to get some invaluable competitive experience...

As the league play off positions are now decided, yes, this fixture does not have the importance it might have had, but neither does that make it a "meaningless challenge match"..

And I'm sorry, but I'm looking forward to this as a stand-alone fixture with what I personally think is an added attraction of perhaps some riders new to the division making appearances, far more so than I would if it was tagged along as effectively a second half to a PL fixture, as was the 'Hawks farewell's original fate..

Judging by the calls I've had today from people hoping to come along, I think you might find there are others who agree with me....

Okay ,i admit my views on Lakeside are not the best..And you must admit that all your posts on Len and Rye house have always been less than complimentary,, So lets agree to disagree on this ,its tiring me out on the keyboard..

Parsloes 1928 nearly is 100% correct.

Both teams are giving opportunities to up and coming talent.

Obviously Waco would prefer same old every week with the no new talent.

Everybody is always shouting about opportunities for English riders, yet here one exists and some people dont want it. Shame on you people who cry about no chances for new talent yet heres one, but it`s watered down.

How the hell are they supposed to get a chance if iut isnt for fixtures like this.

Hopefully the new riders on show will make a mockery of all the negativity posted.

Even if they dont time is on their side.

Good luck to those who ride.

This is supposed to be a league match not a trainies special. OK if you like watching riders who are half a lap of the pace, and is also denying team members earning some extra much needed money from rider replacement rides, I can tell you with some certainty they wont be happy..Put some additional races on for the trainies is a better idea..

Waco - couldn't agree more with you on every post you made on this thread. :approve:

At least you and I attend these meetings which is more than can be said for some of the posters on here
