Indeed a most sad day. Alf was wonderful..almost certainly one of a dying breed. As a newcomer to the Retail side of Souvenirs was back 1970 he was the "Icon" we all learned from. Great company..endless tales and he literally knew everyone..No doubt flogging photos, badges and rossettes just outside the Pearly Gates..RIP old fella..

A sad day indeed with our sport left to mourn the passing of another of speedway's truly great characters and my thoughts are with his family at this time. Those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him well will never forget him. I fully agree with all the thoughts concerning him expressed by 'Spiegal' above. RIP Alf - it was a honour to have known you.

Agree with all the comments said by others. I knew Alf only in his later years when he used to turn up, home or abroad, to take the annual group photo of the promoters of the BSPA during their AGM.

I think he was an invited guest for past services, and he was so easy to talk to even though we had never met before. Always acknowledged you at every occasion.

RIP Alf

As others have said, a character and a Gentleman.

I can vividly recall the first words he ever spoke to me on the centre green at Bradford. (My first opportunity to photograph from the inside of a track, thanks to my association with the Speedway Mail.)

I wandered up to the first turn and positioned myself in what I thought was the perfect place, until a voice behind me shouted....

"OY MATE! GET OUTTA MY F*****G SHOT!"

Despite that embarrassing (for me) first meeting Alf would always have time for a chat whenever our paths crossed.

RIP Alf.

This is the previous thread. It carries a lot of sympathy messages as well.

Thank you gustix - I will not be able to make it from up here in Sunderland but your Post shows what genuine people Speedway folk are. It was good of you to Post the information for the benefit of others who may be able to attend.
